I've now changed my Spyder for this:

Lotus Exige 1 by christopherjgrant, on Flickr

Only driven about 150 miles so far and between being strict with the run in process and the current poor weather up in the north east of Scotland I'm just scratching the surface of the cars character and ability but I'm really taken with it. It's a very different car to the Spyder. Obviously not in the same league as far as the finish. The best comparison I can make is I moved, from a Caterham R400 to the Spyder, the Exige sits right between the two. For me it's exactly what I want - a couple of thousand miles per year for the occasional blast out. The Spyder is a special car but so is the Exige. I have absolutely no regrets in changing.

Edited to say all the very best to the new owner of my ex-Spyder, I'm sure he'll update this thread later in the week smile

I haven't been out to check so apologies if this is nonsense, but didn't someone lose a rubber from the end of the roof hoop (that locates on the roll hoops). Could there be from there?
That might have been me. I have lost one anyway.

Not the same thing.

Happy new year folks.

Looks great, well done.

I'm still unsure whether to swap back to an Exige ( probably wouldn't be the V6 though).

Enjoy it!

It was sitting in an exige roadster at the festival of speed that led to me buying a spyder! I have a call back scheduled in the new year to arrange a test drive. I am looking forward to the comparison but in practice unless spyders continue to hold their value and exiges depreciate to parity I could not make the move.
What is it that draws others into the exige?

The V6 has some depreciation to go - there's not many around yet so prices for lightly used ones are still quite strong but they'll drop.

Spyder prices are quite good at the moment.

The old 1.8 model Exige are holding their prices better than anything - I paid £35k for my 2010 model 2.5 years ago and the equivalent car is still selling for around the £32/33k mark.

What's the attraction to the Exige?
I can't answer for others, but for me at the time of buying mine it was the whole 'back to basics' and just wanting a raw weekend car with a roof and a tad of practicality.( and I think they look awesome)

Sadly, mine was written off after just five weeks so I never got the full ownership experience, and that crash put the wind up me ( more so my wife and kids!) with respect to plastic cars.

I now feel the time is right to re-visit the world of bonded aluminium and piss smelling interiors, although I'm now 2.5 years older, a little larger and with a bad back and sciatica I'm not sure I'll be as comfy in an Exige as I once was....

Can see why a 1M isn't the solution Zyp
The spyder is a much much more focused and honed Sports car - an extremely easy car to drive hard and to extract a feeling of excitement / enjoyment (sense of occasion). Damp or dry conditions and the Spyder will live with more powerful machinery (FACT). To me the Spyder almost felt mini-GT3 - raw (but not too raw), noise, seats (driving position), one of the best manual gearbox's today, handling, etc etc. Todays and future cars just aren't being made like this anymore... so will be a tough car to replace. A good read is issue 188 of EVO Nov 2013, page 76, Future Icons... smile

The 1M - also has a degree of sense of occasion about it too, but for different reasons to the Spyder. No car has kept me on my toes like the 1M does - give it full throttle without being 100% on the ball and it'll throw you threw a hedge! Can be quite annoying at times the ease and speed at which it breaks traction if you're not in the mood. It 'feels' quiker, rare, nice place to sit, has all the toy's, rear seats etc etc, but just falls behind the Spyder in the 'weekend-car-in-the-garage-for-special-moments' category.

On my test drive we went round the Hobbyhorse island (shavenone knows it well), the lights were amazingly all on green and as I exited, straightened up and squeezed the gas pedal we ended up slightly *cough* off straight.

It wasn't damp on the roads, and I obviously wasn't giving it loads as it was my first time in a 1M, but it certainly didn't take much to get the traction light flashing.

Overall, I can see the attraction of it as shavenminge says above.

I just don't really need the rear seats, although it would be nice to go out as a family in a performance car occasionally, my kids are big enough as to not particularly fit in the back of it. (One even complains about the back of the Alpina)

And the orange ones certainly look best wink

would the bigger v6 car alleviate your concerns re the plastic shell?

Possibly - it appears to be more substantial.

However, the V6 is out of my price range at the moment.

That's a very good point, however we're talking new price for the Exige against a GT3 of what - 6,7 years old?

(and we all know they need £10k spending on them wink )

Sure Itsy will sort that soon.

Welcome, anyway.

Just seen your profile - still have the 993 GT2?

And that's with traction control ON smile

The widely accepted (and best tbh) way of driving the 1M is either in MDM mode or DSC OFF. Go back and try it again you poof hehe

The 1M's interesting, apparently being an instant icon. I've had 3 BMWs in 3 years though - I don't want another! I sold an Alpina to buy the Spyder.
What do you have Zyp?
I had a 111s a few years ago and so I get the appeal of the Exige, but so far I love the Spyder. Enough of the tactility of the Elise, with the sense of occasion of my old TVR Griffith and the usability and build quality of BMW.
It's going to be hard to beat. It could even be my keeper...

Ted you can update the list yourself - just quote it and amend the quoted text. Where in Glos are you?
