FFS change the record.........
It's not a hit record either I honestly thought he might be right on some levels before I drove the car. The only thing I can really agree with him on is it would be nicer with shorter ratios and that the roof could be better. The roof is WAY better than the 987.
The roof isn't going to bother me at all, but the ratios may. It's too early to tell.
Once 3D printing goes to the next level we'll be downloading gearbox designs once our cars are out of warranty

Interesting point you made regarding the PEC instructor commenting that the Spyder 'feels' faster than the GT4........to be expected I suppose with lower aero less grip and more cabin noise.
Yes. The instructor who was with me loved the spyder - nice guy. I'm sure they are told to sell the car to the customer, but I didn't need much selling. The other instructor didn't know I was ordering one, so I asked him "what do you think of the Spyder?" and he was luke warm. After chatting for longer it turned out he wasn't a fan of convertibles so it was understandable in that sense. He said if he lived in the South of France he'd feel differently.
He was very excited for the GT4RS and was hoping for a turbo! We discussed the way the cars have to be limited a bit to fit the Porsche lineup and he seemed disappointed that the GT4 wasn't a turbo already, if I understood correctly?!?!?!?!

I have no doubt that the 981 roof is better for road noise and keeping out the rain but not in design or finish. Did you not see the exposed rough finished metal mechanism on the inside, the straps criss-crossing, it looked unfinished. I even asked if the car was a production model, it looked like it might still be a prototype! Go and look at the inside of the 987 roof, different class. TB303 said:

The inside of the rear boot is not pretty and not very German, agreed.I think the 987 roof is a mess in other ways though. Neither car is perfect. I'd still take the 981 roof over the 987, but it remains to be seen the longevity of it.
There was talk at the PEC yesterday of the 987 roof being poor and leaking, FYI.

Hardly. I'm just saying both roofs have their flaws.
I'd probably buy a 3.8 GTS if they made one. Does that help?
I think that goes for a lot of people - a 3.8 BGTS or CGTS would make far more sense for most than either the Spyder or GT4. I'd even prefer a 3.8 CS to any of them. Never happen though.I'd probably buy a 3.8 GTS if they made one. Does that help?

No it won't, you're right.I'd be the first to admit the light weight stuff is largely BS. It was the same with the 987. It's a combination of factors that makes these cars - the damping, the increased power, shorter steering rack etc. I prefer the body kit of the Spyder to the GTS personally.
They gave away the sports chassis early this time before the launch of the Spyder, unlike with the 987s.
It's always a compromise and this is a cracking car overall. Gear ratios are likely to be the biggest annoyance, not steering (which was what I expected to annoy me), and that's an issue across the range sadly!

what a load of b*ll*cks drove my spyder through a torrential summer downpour at motorway speeds and never let a drop of water in!also although not completely practical for some it was very well made as was the rear deck unlike as it sounds is the 981 spyder deck and roof!

FYI the roof on my 987/2 Spyder does not leak, the "tent" roof is a work of art. you sit in the drivers seat, look up and you see a beautiful carbon header rail. you take the rear section out ( something you can not do with the 981 Spyder ) put down the windows and you have one of the best looking soft tops out there. it is not the easiest roof to use but i come from Atom and Caterham ownership so that roof is so easy to live with.
as for the 981Spyder i am sure there will be lots of people that will love it and it will without doubt be a nice car. my opinion for what it is worth is it should have been PDK. my only problem with the 981 Spyder is it is a softer version of the 987/2 Spyder. i realy like the look of that classic interior just a shame that red does not always show up the correct rich shade it actualy is. i was offered an allocation of a 981 Spyder and chose not to go for it, as an every day driver i would love it but as a weekend pride and joy toy i said no

I owned a short shift Spyder then bought after much deliberation and 100 miles test driving a PDK which has been so much fun driven 24/7 in manual mode and for the sake of my licence not 24/7 in sport mode ;-) had the 981 been offered with a PDK I think I would have just ticked that box automatically (no pun intended) however as a hardened manual man with an intense dislike of auto boxes and my current Spyder being the 1st non manual car ever owned I can honestly say after literally a few minutes shifting the new seriously short shift manual box I can 100% say I would have tipexed the PDK option ;-) the clutch, gear change and driver involvement couldn't be bettered with a PDK Porsche going 100% manual was a good call for this particular 981 Talk of the 987 spyder roof being bad does make me laugh.
It was designed exactly as it is to do a simple role. Lightweight, removable and act as sun shade/rain cap.
I personally think a lot of design and thought went into it and how it would be incorporated. I love the simple lines and the carbon rail at the front. The limitations were clearly presented and if someone bought one, they shouldn't have been surprised by it. But the car was designed to be driven roof off, that was the whole spirit of it.
Noisy... So is driving with the roof off. If you don't like that then it's simply the wrong car for you. But then it wasn't designed to be a relaxed GT car with the roof on either. Buy a normal boxster instead.
Difficult... It takes less than 60secs to either put it on or take it off and stow it away properly. It really isn't tricky!
Leaks... Not in mine, not a drop. It's been sat outside in torrential rain and driven through it without any leaking.
If you bought one, you took the design of the roof on as part of the cars character. I wouldn't change it one bit.

Yes although the uprated PDK S box would provide a great alternative in both the Spyder and GT4 for those averse to manuals. Unfortunately unlikely to happen.Hi all
I am interested to hear from other 981 Spyder purchasers their lock-in time (from lock-in to build date) as I have already passed my lock-in date (mid August) for a December build slot (4 months)?
I ask this as it seems that others with similar build slots seem to still have a few weeks until their lock-in dates and that I was at first told mid September for lock-in for my December build slot.

My build date WAS December but has now slipped/moved to April due to PTS. I sort of locked down my Spec. a month back but I've not been told 'This is it, you can't change it now', which I would expect to happen.I am interested to hear from other 981 Spyder purchasers their lock-in time (from lock-in to build date) as I have already passed my lock-in date (mid August) for a December build slot (4 months)?

Not sure this helps
