I have got to say - that spyder looks awesome in red, particularly with those wheels - more 'classy' than any of the other colours i have seen. red's a colour i never even considered for some reason when i specced mine - i regret that now looking at your car!!! enjoy your new car, she's a beaut!

I would have to say the 3.8 engine. Having it in the very stiff 981 chassis is just brilliant. To me the 981 chassis feels leaps and bounds ahead of the 987 but I recognise you will have your opinions on that as you've stated many a time.

Driving the car today I was also left wondering how great the GT4 must be, knowing that it is a "better" car.

Seriously, for all the forum chatter the Spyder is a brilliant car. I know you like to bang on about steering feel, gear ratios etc. but this is a heck of a package.
Congrats - looks ace.
I was at Mayfair OPC yesterday locking my spec down - surprised they didn't say you were collecting that day.

Enjoy!

Finishes at the factory 1st week of Feb, I think, so March 1st for collection.

Excellent - Mine was originally December build that got bounced back due to being PTS and as I wasn't taking car until March anyway I have never heard back any progress report from the dealer since good bad or ugly eek

A few thoughts.... Some of these are applicable to all 981s, some to the Spyder only. The Spyder is my first 981 remember.

Compared to my 360 the cabin is quite snug. Larger drivers and passengers may find the bucket seats a bit small. We are pretty slim so this isn't an issue, but could be a consideration when speccing seats.

The engine. That engine! Finally the (amazing) chassis has the engine it deserves.

For me the gearbox is the best manual shift I've tried, up there with the joystick action of the (don't laugh) MK1 MX5. So far gear ratios have been a non issue for me, but I must caveat that with the fact that I'm running the car in.

Brakes - haven't fully tested them yet, but they seem to have the expected incredible stopping power from my limited use. I do notice a bit more grab/servo bite compared to what I remember of my 987S and compared to my 360.

Steering - I like the steering a lot. I feel that comment will attract criticism but honestly I really do. Today when driving I was trying to notice the electric nature of it, and the worst I can say is that at really low speeds (I mean below 10 MPH) it seems possibly a bit artificial. More driving required to really confirm. The steering once driving feels good to me. I should also say that sometimes the amount of information I got from the 987 actually made me a bit nervous, thinking I had a flat tyre etc. I know that sounds mad, but that happened a lot with me. I am mad.

Noise. I'm a sound man and the sound is brilliant even with the windows closed. It's actually great with both the exhaust on and off, surprisingly! Haven't noticed any annoying wind or road noise yet at speed.

Comfort/useabilty. For me the jury is out on how often this car can be driven. The suspension is firm, but not crashy. If you want more comfort, I think a PASM GTS is the way, and you'll lose a bit of connection. On normal roads for a sports car it is compliant. As we know, the chassis is incredibly stiff. They should have offered a front lift option. It's a glaring omission.

Handling wise I've simply not touched on any of it really yet - needless to say the car inspires massive amounts of confidence in a way that something like the 360 simply can't (the 430 dealt with that).

This really is a wonderful car - from the moment you drive off it's simply pure driving pleasure (sounds like Porsche marketing, I know, but it really is very pure compared to most cars out there). It won't be for everyone - you do need a degree of commitment to the Petrolhead cause to drive it compared to a vanilla boxster I reckon. Apart from the engine/gear shift, for me there probably isn't a single stand out. It's an incredible combination of what Porsche has learned with the development of the Boxster over the years, with it finally being given a big engine.

Ignore the forum chatter from those who have not driven one, and perhaps drive one yourself before drawing conclusions. Reading all the stuff on here made me lower expectations despite having had a PEC drive a few months back and experiencing the car myself!

It's a much smaller market place and original manual 987 Spyder was only circa 130 cars many of which got heavily discounted in late 2010/through 2011

It will be of greater interest how long before Spyders & GT4's are list price or less even eek

Don t hold your breath!

Won t happen for a long time.....especially with the Spyders severely restricted numbers....wait till the Spring!

Remember people hoped GT3s would drop to list but even early cars are still getting substantial premiums and these two will be no different.

You haven't mentioned the roof, so are you saying the reason you need to be a petrol head prefer it to a vanilla Boxster is the ground clearance issue you HAVE mentioned, and is the ground clearance any worse than an X73 GTS (I know its worse than a GT4)?

Sorry meant to say it's worse ON a GT4.

the front bumper's lower chin sticks out quite a bit and is very low .. the gap between the lowest point and the road is about 1cm less than the height of an iPhone 5.

Roof is not an issue for me personally, but it was enough to put me of a 987 if that means anything....

Ground clearance - hasn't been an issue over speed bumps etc, the problem is with extreme situations like SFO's garage which is a nasty angle. Put it this way, I'm not sure what our USA friends will do if they live in a city like LA with terrible inclines/ramps everywhere.

Thanks TB for your summary. One of my main concerns is ground clearance. I have to go over a couple of speed bumps to get to my house! Hopefully there will be enough to get by. I agree about the need for a front lifting system as an option. What I am looking forward to is the extra power. I have owned a Boxster S and Cayman Si. Both could have handled more.
