Hi,

Been reading for a while now and finally made the jump yesterday from my wonderful Cayman GTS into a Spyder yesterday.

Only had the car a day but absolutely loving it so far. It feels so alert and alive. A white car wasnt an initial preference but JZM as always managed a deal I couldnt resist.

Im lucky enough to drive a 997.2 gt3 and 964rs fairly often and the spyder certainly still feels special after those!

Congratulations - they look good in white - I like them , very pure in that colour.

Will be really interesting to hear your thoughts compared to your other two "proper" cars - Looking at you garage, I think the more time to spend in it the more you'll like it !

Let us know and enjoy your new toy.

By the way - I wrote some instructions for easy roof deployment for a friend - I'll post below in case it helps (if you are already a master in this respect feel feee to ignore and apologies) - its like anything once you know the right technique Its super easy and quick - literally takes less than 30 seconds either way.

Spyder Roof

Open :

Press and long hold unlock button on key fob - boot clicks open and allows you to undo fins

Undo fins - feel for red button - gentle press on upper facing fin opposite the red button and then lift (don't lift until it it un clicks as this makes it harder to unclick) if your pushing hard ; you are pushing in the wrong place - you should be able to do this every time immediately "with your eyes shut" by feel alone - once you get it you'll see what I mean.

Stow fins - what feels like backwards - hook at bottom - align tiny raised pyramid on fin and hood fin stowage area.

Open boot

Put 1 hand under roof by windscreen to allow you in a moment to push up on underside of the roof - keep away from mechanism underneath !

Put other hand ON roof -

Flip back roof and it will fall into stowage area.

Push roof down at both edges so boot can close easily.

Shut boot and fin lids

Close .

Turn off engine and pull boot open button near gear lever up to open boot.

Get out and raise fun flap on drivers side - walk to passenger side and raise 2nd flap

Open boot and lean into middle to grab roof - lift to about half way - to a position where the weight of the roof is gone and WAIT for the locking arm to extend - very important this as the the locking arm can hit the top of the windscreen if not given enough time to extend and then the roof will not close .

Once arms has extended let it fall into place - if arm has extended correctly then it will align with the top of windscreen.

Undo passenger side fin release button - buton is at 6 o'clock - no need to force - your are pressing in the wrong place if forcing

Grab fin with both hands near the narrow corner (not palm of hand) and snap into holder - CHECK firmly located with upward tug. Very important - some have come loose when moving at speed and damages paint on the boot lid.

Move to drivers side and push boot shut - gentle click.

Do the same with drivers fin

Press and hold down the lock button on the key fob - roof engages and windows close automatically.

Basically every step should be a doddle and nothing should feel hard or forced .

Good luck smile

Also took the opportunity to get out and about yesterday. I keep thinking about changing cars, that is until I drive the Spyder again; it's just so bloody good. Quite tempted by the Mclaren I went out with though- beautiful car.

Had a good run out in mine yesterday in the sunshine....
Not quite as pleasant today. Took my daughter out for lunch on Dartmoor, but complete pea souper up on top.. roof stayed firmly closed I'm afraid :-(

Good to hear the views of other 981 Spyder owners here.

I've now done 14k in mine and absolutely love it.
A few months back I bought a 987.2 BS to take on some more daily duties, but for me the 981 is so much more special.

A question to current owners...
What other car could replace all that the 981 Spyder gives ??

For me, I love -

The noise
The gearshift
The seats (folding buckets)
Handling
Ride (Soooo good for such a well handling car)
Lack of scuttle shake (a big step up from the 987)
The power (just enough to have fun on our A and B's)
Euro tour practicality and comfort.

What would you swap it for ???

Cheers

Only another lower mileage example lick

I totally agree and £ for £ I think it would be impossible to achieve the same level of fun as we currently enjoy

Mine had a nice run in the autumn sun today cool

Thanks chap really helpful.

The gt3 and 964 are both my Dads but i do spend a lot of time in them.

Did 150 miles around my local roads today. First impressions are that its amazing, its just so agile and alive.

I still dont think anything touches a Mezger but for a non motorsport unit this is amazing.

I think this is the happiest thread on PH smile I love how you guys enjoy just getting out in your cars, posting photos, and telling each other about your adventures!!

Sometimes I wish I'd got a Spyder instead of a GT4. They're so different and both awesome. Maybe next time.

Ah ha - you found it - thats me - I tried to find this on YT to help yesterday and couldn't - I assumed it was so bad that the YT mods had deleted forever smile I've perfected my technique since then - main change being the use of the holding down the unlock (roof off) and the lock (roof back up) buttons on the key at the start and finish.

Also from memory I think the vid didn't explicitly deal with waiting for the locking arm to extend when putting the roof up before letting it drop on top of the windscreen - maybe it did I can't remember - either way this is the best bit as do this right and you then don't need to get back in the car to deploy the locking arm at the end - just let it fall and then use the key to do this as you walk away - press and hold the lock button and it deploys the locking arm , does up the windows and locks the car - simple smile

Hope this helps Oso when he/she gets his/hers after PExing his/her GT4 for a Spyder (you know you want to and FWIW having proper experience of both I know which one I'd keep smile )

Thanks for the info but my key fob works on the putting down but unfortunately didn't work at all with the closing / putting up - haven't tried the spare key yet but is this function programmable from the OBC or does it require a dealer visit confused

Thanks guys I will have it sorted on 1st service next May

Just checked and the spare key fob works perfectly so looks like one key needs reprogramming or replacing rolleyes
