It depends how much difference you're looking for. The drivetrain is pretty much the same, so for me they'd be too similar if you want a change of characteristics.
thanks for the feedback, test drive definitely required. It could be that the long hearing continues to frustrate and something with a bit more low down punch may suit better. In which case would probably go Alpine over 718.Lexington59 said:
I wouldn’t touch a 981 if you paid me. Too much smoke and mirrors on here, by the 981 club. 987 far better.
Depends what you want, better for posing, but worse for driving, PH is more a badge and posing forum though. Most would not touch a £40k 10 year old car even if every one said it was the best car ever made in the world. To most a 987 is too old and too cheap to be seen in, it’s that simple.

hi all
Thinking of getting a 987 Spyder.
Looking for a bit of guidance in terms of hows it feels compared to the 981 Cayman S which I had in PDK but found difficult to enjoy due to the long gearing and the speeds required to get the engine into its power band and 'singing'. Also I didn't find the car special enough when having it as a garage queen taking it out a couple of weekends a month.
With the above in mind a deem manual transmission to a must and hope that this and the added sense of occasion of the Spyder will give me what I'm looking for. Is this a reasonable expectation?
I will look to do a couple of gentle track days per year as well as a couple of trips to France (I'm based near Manchester) and some nice drives out at the weekend. Probably c. 5-6k miles per annum.
Doesn't really need to be a convertible and the only other options I can think of are a Cayman R (prefer looks of the Spyder) or ordering a new A110.
Is there a specific forum worth me joining to further research potential ownership?
cheers
You’ll not get much in the way of common sense here unfortunately but FWIW. Thinking of getting a 987 Spyder.

Spyder will be lower and firmer than the Cayman S, it will have a proper LSD too and likely be lighter. All of which will help on track days. It will certainly feel peppy. People harp on about long gearing but I never find it an issue the car pulls well and revs a little higher than a standard 987. With a short shift fitted the change is lovely.
The car does feel special, I use mine in the same way you’d plan to use yours and it’s always fun to roll It out the garage. It feels way more special than it’s Boxster roots.
They are spec sensitive. You need manual, PSE, buckets, chrono, and Spyder alloys as a minimum to get the Spyder experience. Ceramics would be the cherry on top but they are rare and a potential wallet destroyer should anything need replaced.
There are no Spyder specific forums AFAIK but there is the Porsche Boxter Spyder (UK) group on Facebook.
Hope this helps.

It's not that simple. I think you're making an overly harsh generalisation there. Everyone has their preferences and like different things for all manner of reasons.
You stated you buy on looks over how it drives so would never buy a 987. Your words.Edited by Porsche911R on Sunday 22 September 23:22

I test-drove a 981 S expecting to love it but was completely underwhelmed. I then drove a Spyder and a CR and loved them both. On the back of just a few drives I couldn’t really explain why but they just seemed to be much more of an event to drive.
Hoping this will be how I feel. Also hoping that coming into October prices will start to come down a little in the lead up to the end of the year.
Definitely need to have something sorted by Xmas mind.

I personally bought a 981 because I don't like the 987 looks, among other reasons. It doesn't mean most people on PH would do the same.Richard-3pdyn said:

I felt the same between the 987.2 Spyder and a mates 981 Cayman S albeit with PDK. The Cayman was a very nice car but not in a special weekend treat kinda way.
I don't think you live to far from me if you want to pop down and look round mine.
I could be tempted into selling it if it's what you are after.
PM if you wish to.
Cheers
Ed
