Hi all , after months of deliberation and following all the 981/718/4.0gts forums I finally bought a 981 spyder, picked up yesterday and loved every minute of the drive home.
I know some will dislike the classic interior but I'm one for something different and I'm sure there are others who agree.. albeit a guilty pleasure wink
Congratulations on your newbie and hope you have as much fun as I have had with mine for just short of 4 years

Regarding the 718 version this is my thoughts after deciding to not take up the allocated slot I was just offered for several reasons one biggy being the null & voiding of my warranty if I swap out the rear box and no chance of ever extending the warranty after 3 years with that much needed mod in situ

https://youtu.be/oFeoGx2G7IM

I would say this is a very accurate review but the one thing that's not correct IMO in this video is the exhaust sound as recorded isn't like that inside the car its far more muted very one tone "bassy" and no pops & crackles on the downshifts A massive amount of the 3.8 engines character is missing especially below 5k rpm where switching PSE on off on hardly makes much difference and near the max revs the sound track kicks in but is so so muted compared to 981 and that was with roof off

The switch from 6 cylinders to 3 on a trailing throttle is annoying to the point where I had to switch the stop / start off to cut that out too.

I have never turned stop/start off in 13 years of it being on my daily drivers so its a technology I don't mind at all but the way the 718 switches from 6 to 3 is not that pleasant and definitely noticeable to the point of being annoying

Steering feel gear change and clutch as described is exactly what I experienced on my 75 minutes test drive and the ride in standard mode felt softer than the 981's which was appreciated on our far from smooth roads especially as the grip and handling were fantastic in the newbie

I would add that the steering feel & extra weight on the 981 version is my preferred choice out of the 2 Spyders despite many thinking because the GT department developed this car the steering would automatically be an improvement over the older car which even according to my PEC instructor was how he felt about the new set up too

Overall as usual from Porsche a step on but on the minus side is the step up in list price which no longer includes buckets and imo a massive chunk of character removed by the new very muted sound track so much so that when I got back into my daily driver Mini JCW and headed for home the first thing that struck me was how "loud" my Mini sounded and I have never considered the standard factory exhaust on that car to be anything but a nice muted background tone

Hi daro911, I read your review in the gt4 forum which made me smile whilst reading it smile
The sound factor is the one thing that made me opt for the 981 spyder over a 718 4.0 gts.
After asking my opc about the validity of warranty with an aftermarket exhaust my suspicions were confirmed, so I opted for the spyder, although I haven't achieved many miles in it due to the shocking weather I am not disappointed. It's a thing of beauty just to look at in the garage.
I have a multi stop trip to Spain already booked for summer that will take in a variety of scenery before taking the ferry home from Santander, There's nothing like a flat six screaming through tunnels tongue out
I love the classic interior btw, although I can understand it's not to everyone's taste..

Glad you’re enjoying your car - I’m a big fan of the 981 Spyder.

Re aftermarket exhaust on 718 Spyder - head technician at my OPC said warranty wasn’t an issue unless they can prove the fault was a direct result of a bypass and as it’s only a bypass it can’t do any damage to anything. If I still felt uncomfortable and wanted a belt and braces approach he suggested taking it off if it ever needed engine warranty work & as the ECU can’t detect it no one would be any the wiser - he then asked that after I fit my JCR titanium race pipe that I bring the car in so he can hear it as he thinks they sound absolutely epic.

I realise all OPC’s are different; maybe I’m lucky to have a decent relationship with the service guys.

This only leaves the small issue of the cost of the mod - I’m pretending this issue doesn’t exist !!

One of the 718 GT4's bought from my OPC has actually had this exhaust fitted, it does indeed sound epic.
I just couldn't afford to have to fight for a warranty claim if one ever arose.
I may have just been overthinking the issue and had I put the original back on before taking it in all may have been well.
Not many clips out there without the gpf filters on but there is one and natural overrun can be heard biggrin

Supersprint have now made a back box along with cat and gpf deletes, cheaper than jcr also.

That’s absolutely fair enough and the 981 also sounds epic - enjoy the car ; they are brilliant fun and great value smile

Your Spyder looks fabulous and I am sure will prove a wise buy as cars with this much character really are hard to find since the new legislation has silenced the latest versions from many manufacturers but Porsche seem to have bent over backwards to comply well into the next dumbing down regs circa 2025

And I would no longer need to get out and fold in the mirrors to get it into the single garage, the Spyder is now available with auto folding exterior mirrors !

Well after obsessing about buying a Spyder for a VERY long time, today I finally bought one. White with great spec and in concourse condition with 3500 miles on the clock. Got tired of the waiting games and discussions on overs on a 718 and went to have a look at the 981 Spyder at 911virgin. It was indeed love at first sight. Collect on Monday and planning my first road trip with my boy. It had become a total obsession and I have to admit the time spent scanning this forum, autotrader etc was getting unhealthy. I am a very happy chap today. The guys at 911V really know their stuff and were an absolute pleasure to deal with.

Congratulations - I have to say I was puzzled why the 911 virgin one took so long to sell but you've got yourself a lovely example.
It was Cars with Luke's video that convinced me to get the 981 over the 718 and the GTS 4.0 and I have no regrets.
