Speaking from a personal perspective, I wouldn't consider a 987 Spyder without ceramics.

Aren’t the brakes callipers exactly the same - just bigger carbon discs and pads but same callipers? They are on more modern Porsche’s.

So buying carbon brakes to replace discs with steel discs and pads is like... well ... i don’t get it.

So you pay a premium to then pay more to take the discs off that you have bought to put inferior discs on so that you avoid the liability which comes with the original discs which you didn't really want or need in the first place? Yes, win-win! wobble
No premium on these cars with pccb, and most people are scared to death of them, and avoid buying one due to this.

So yes a win win, you get the car for the same price but get a far better braking system , the calipers are the very same 6 pots you get on the GT3. Not only that you bet a bespoke MC, so no need to dick about with the sheep who swap these out, you also get different hubs, so you have Choices, run the ceramic disks , take them off and fit some 350mm 2 piece disks, or run the ceramics till you wear them out then swap to a set of race disks.

Either way the 987 platform with 6 pot GT3 callipers and 350mm disks stops like no other Porsche I know of.

A 1250kg car on cups with this setup rips your face off, and makes instructors fear for their lives when taken out lol, it’s pretty funny to see passengers faces even race instructors, when you have not touched your brakes till way after the markers lol plus you out brake almost any other car on track into the tight stuff.
I must say I hate 2 up if you are fat though, the difference with another 90kg is quite alarming on the 1st bend you get too ! But you recalibrate, but the wear and heat must go up 10 fold.

See my above post :-) it’s a completely different braking system even down to the hubs. So very expensive to copy all round.
Would cost you £10k for a after market set up as good.
Or £6k plus to copy the oem setup.

Hence the win win option when buying 2nd hand.

HI all

Thought i'd share a few pics of my trip around Europe. Having bought the car late last year, this was the first opportunity to get to know it better.
Just over 2k miles touring around Switzerland, the passes around Andermatt, onto Stuttgart and the Porsche & Mercedes museums, through the Black Forst down to Colmar and onto Paris before returning home.
The car was fabulous - the soundtrack is amazing and those ceramics are brilliant on the mountains. There's not the sense of weight transfer you get in a 911 - and for me therefore the confidence knowing what the car is doing. But what you do get is this sense of neutral handling and it grips grips grips. Its more a matter of trust the car. The turn in is instant, ceramics add to the light quick feel.
Wonderful trip over 10 days.

Hi yes awesome. Hotels etc were squeaky clean. No evidence of conscious social distancing, 1 in 5 in a mask. Generally busier than I thought it would be. Eurotunnel full schedules.

A tale of woe smile

So, I stupidly sold my 718 Spyder (& JCR exhaust) as I planned to put the funds towards another car, which I have now decided not to buy.

I then decided that price delta between the 718 with JCR and a 981 meant rather that rather than re buying a 718, I’d buy myself a 981 instead - I owned one for about 2.5 years, did 12k very enjoyable miles in it.

So I found a lovely looking 981 and went to see it; coincidently the dealer also had a 718 Spyder in the same colour sitting next to it in their showroom.

The 981 Spyder is a very pretty car and on it’s own, is a real thing of beauty. However, put it next to a 718 Spyder and suddenly it looks less appealing - Porsche are very clever, the design move on’s are very subtle, but taken as a whole, i personally think it’s a far prettier, more purposeful car. This subtle move on is equally noticeable inside the car too. However the price gap still makes the 981 a far more sensible purchase.

As such, I was just about to buy it as I know exactly what they are like to drive, but I thought I’d better take it for a spin as it felt like the prudent thing to do.

This is where it got a bit messy ;

So, first things first - the 981 is partially defined by it’s noise; I have no idea how this got signed off from a regulatory perspective tbh, but it’s a screamer. It’s a lovely thing, however when pushed it felt very soft & it didn’t bite like the 718 ; perfect for a Sunday morning, roof down cruise, but after the 718 it felt really compromised dynamically - now in fairness, it was wearing old Pirelli’s and maybe the geometry needed a tweak, but it was more than this; the 718’s GT chassis has ruined the 981 for me, which is highly annoying as I would have been very happy with it otherwise.

So a word of warning; if you are thinking of buying a 981 or already own one, don’t park next to and definitely don’t drive, the 718 Spyder with a JCR mod and you’ll be absolutely fine & dandy.

However, IMHO speaking objectively, after owning both, the 718 is a massive move on - whether it’s worth the price delta is another thing entirely - I’d have to say objectively, probably not. But since selling mine, I’ve learnt two things about me.

1. I’m an idiot; selling your car to help fund another purchase that you subsequently don’t bother with is administratively onerous, time consuming & expensive.

2. To me, I now know that the price delta between the two IS absolutely worth it.

718 is a better car apart from the sound, of course. Exhaust upgrade does not truly compensate for the sound. I think 981s look better, even though I have a 781 on order..

981 Spyder and 991 GT3 will be the cars people talk about with great nostalgia in 30 years (especially by those that sold them to fund a house purchase or school fees). Don’t sell. Keep and enjoy into your old age.

981 has far too many issue to be a future great imo.
1: very detuned engine
2: zero adjustments
3: basic PSM and ESP
4: no gt input
5: gen 1 eps
6: stupid long gearing.
7: fake over run which imo is stupid.

The 718 while annoying long geared and expensive must be a much better drive in every way “not driven a 718 Spyder”

But on paper it wins every where and with an exhaust, it's only the gearing issue over the 7 issues the 981 had ! 8 issues if you count that 99% owners still run the p zero's !!!

Still don’t get the hype after running one as a daily all weathers.
It’s just a nice car with an annoying roof and a chavtasic over run.

981 sound is awesome. Yes, subjective but I don’t live in a council house and I’m not violent unless in self defencesmile
