981 has far too many issue to be a future great imo.

The 718 while annoying long geared and expensive must be a much better drive in every way “not driven a 718 Spyder”
Your 718 analysis confirms "not driven a 718 Spyder" but I have and I walked away from my allocation as the 981 delivers more for me than the 718 ever would. Nothing to do with the cars track credentials more to do with my road only sunny weekend usage and my limited skills to extract any more thrills for my hard earned £'s.

Perhaps when you have experienced a 718 Spyder you will be able to compile another list of whats wrong with that model too
In the meantime fast forward to 10m into this review and hear what he concludes in those last 2 minutes and discover an alternative universe does exist which understands both Spyders perfectly

Not quite the same opinion.
Having had a 981GT4 and now a 718GT4 there are differences, the later car has better steering and a better chassis but the sound is a let down.
The high ratios are still a problem but with what feels like more torque possibly an improvement.
The difference between the Spyders is more noticeable as Henry points out and in his opinion it makes the 718 more focused.
Everyone to their own.

I think your picking the review to suit your opinion, I would sooner take the view of probably todays no1 motoring journalist rather than a YouTuber.

Not sure if he’s the no1 motoring journalist, but the 2 cars certainly divide opinion. There is no right or wrong here.https://youtu.be/wHb3-aNuZzQ

I've never driven a 718 Spyder however i owned a 981 Spyder for over 18 months..I loved the little Spyder until my RS at which point it felt under damped and steered too imprecisely in comparison to the great RS..I saw a new 718 Spyder at my OPC in Carrera white and it made the 981 Spyder feminine in comparison...The 981 is a great Spyder but i'd pay over £20K to upgrade to the 718 version given the choice.

I'd agree with Taffy the better looking more focused 718 Spyder with better steering better and proper GT3 suspension better tyres and better brakes is certainly worth the extra £13k extra cost new without question.
It's more like £17k extra new as it no longer comes with carbon buckets as standard and then there is a further £5k plus to get it to sound like a sports car should so £22k before ticking the more expensive than ever before options lists daro911 said:

Yes. Not sure what the big deal is with making the spyder more like the GT4 as it’s not intended for track use. The 981 is perfect for country lanes and having fun off track.daro911 said:

Having just specced a 718 GT4 to replace my 981 GT4 and Spyder, the option prices ££ are little changed.

Not really, it depends where your priorities lie. The oft mentioned 981 over farty exhaust fakery is a bit cringeworthy in Sport plus mode especially and as RSVP has said the exhaust mod on the 718 is only £3500 so not that expensive anyway for those who want it.

Equally the 981 Spyder fine for a weekend trip to the Lakes but essentially lacking focus as a drivers car and I'm not big into cabs either.
A GT3 lump with 8k rev limit lower down torque and more focused chassis steering brakes and suspension appeals more with the 718.

Yep sort of, always found the 981 GT4 in no mans land primarily due to its basic detuned non GT low revving engine. Reasonably focused as a drivers car and good value too.

Unfortunately the exhaust mod is nearer £k 5.5 / £k 6 I’m afraid - but it’s absolutely excellent Agree buckets are a must for most keen drivers but in contrast Porsche have included alot of 'free' options with the 718 over the 981 and not just the free 'media' inclusions.

The 718 is a superb road car and the chassis improvements are just as relevant for the read as they are the track Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
