While not in the same league, I noticed a drop in MPG when I used 95ron in my R32. Was nearly 3-4 mpg less (according to the computer). The acceleration didn't feel as urgent either.

I was very sceptical until I did a week's holiday in Devon. Having run on shell-ordinaire for many months I was used to the performance on my Cayman (2.9l Gen2). Needing to refill, I popped into Tesco and tried their Momentum super-unleaded and thought nothing of it as we continued to potter around the moorland roads. Then, after about 20 miles, I got an opportunity to extend the car and the mid-range part throttle response was markedly improved to the point that my wife (passenger) commented on it. So now it gets Shell VN or equivalent whenever it is available.
As mentioned before by someone else, to have an expensive sports car and hamstring the performance with cheap fuel seems a little crazy.

^^^^^This. Well worth the extra £2ish per fill, makes a noticeable difference.

A week ago my tank was empty and I found I'd stopped at a filling station with only unleaded and diesel, so I bought a full tank of regular unleaded. Since then I reckon the car has been "pinking" from time to time, especially under low rpm acceleration. Anyone else noticed this?

Today my tank was half empty so I've topped up with Esso 97 and will be interested to see if the pinking subsides once the mixed fuel works through the system.

Hmmm. Sounds like my particular tank of boggo unleaded was just a bit too marginal for that 95.

Aha! Just looked back through my credit card receipts and then used google maps to look at the petrol station - unusually I had stopped at a TOTAL site. Usually I go to Shell or Esso. Perhaps there's a message there ...

Shell V Power every time.

Get a Shell Drivers Loyalty Card and then you can turn the points into a gift card (keeps the wife happy too)

TOTAL fuel is complete cack. Their 97 RON stuff is terrible and their 95 RON stuff is so awful that, if pushed, I will put no more than £10 (which is a sad experience when you see how far that gets you...about 2 miles).
