The official line from the dealers was that the discs were fine but cosmetically didn't meet their retail standards. No idea if this is true or not but I'm happy knowing they've been replaced (for whatever reason).

Unless they "cosmetically" wouldn't have fitted in with the low mileage.
A look at the rear discs or the dates on the tyres should confirm it either way.
