Hello,

I recently purchased an 06 Cayman S 3.4 and am loving it. My only criticism is how quiet it is... I am thinking of getting a sports exhaust upgrade.

After much research it seems that Gert at Carnewal over in Belgium has a good offering.

My only concern is that installing the sports exhaust may effect the re-sale value.

Do you think a sports exhaust would put people off or make the car more desirable?

Not sure of the cost difference but if you can stretch I'd go for the OEM. I have it on a 981 Boxster and it's magic. There are threads on here concerned with the "boominess" (if thats a word) but although it is notably louder and deeper at certain revs I don't have a problem with it on motorways or extended runs. May be different with a Cayman due to the coupe/echo chamber effect??

Any ideas on how much the OEM for a 987 would cost?

Not sure, you can get an aftermarket for £15-1800, not sure if thats switchable. OEM starts with a 3 IIRC

I have a sports exhaust on the Cayman S Design Edition 1 I purchased recently. As a matter of interest I also have the original to put back on should the next owner decide that he/she doesn't like the sports version. I have no idea what make of exhaust it is but it is certainly 'boomy' in the cab when at low revs (a little intrusively if you really want to know!) but when the engine is properly wound up the boomy noise goes away and the noise is truly sublime! I shall put up with any low level resonance just to hear the noise it makes (and I sold my adored Chimaera with stright through exhausts to buy the Cayman! Now, the V8 noise on the chimaera is just about as good as it gets but I am truly loving the more high pitched noise from the Cayman and would recommend any proper petrolhead to consider it.

FWIW, my suggestion would be to keep the original and invest in a new sports exhaust. Go for it fella!

If you are in SE london (or are happy to make a trip there) then you are welcome to check my chariot out.

FWIW the Carnewal GT is a mod to your existing exhaust (we'll it's a swap). It's is the OEM exhaust essentially, just louder. It doesn't effect emissions in the slightest either. It's 400 Euros, it looks stock and sounds brilliant. Review with really poorly recorded samples: http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/motas/porker10.html

I've got the factory sports exhaust on my spyder and it's disappointing- the problem is I've been spoilt in the past. If I were you I'd find an aftermarket exhaust you like (listen to other cars or look on youtube) and keep the original for resale.

Sure yours is working properly? hehe

I've got the PSE on mine (unplugged) and it sounds brilliant.

This came up last night on this thread

Here's my contribution:
I've just today got a 2006 Cayman S with a Milltek system - I haven't had chance to fully exercise it yet but it sounds good so far, more subtle than expected at lower speeds and not crazy at high speed but it's a definite improvement over standard (I have a 996 with PSE and full K&N induction system though so I'm a bit spoilt).

I've driven it a bit harder since and I think it works well - nice tailpipes too, thin walled but with Milltek engraved/etched on top of each one.

Yes! I'm used to more cylinders and less silencers... The PSE sounds quite good at high revs but is a victim of catalytic converters and closed loop fuel injection none the less.

If you unplug/disconect your PSE does it default to the loud setting?

Oh yes - sounds great all the time.
Disables the noise cut out at 30 - 40 mph.

I once followed a chap in a Boxster with a Capristo - it was very loud but made a lovely noise.

Thanks for all of the advice.

In conclusion, I think it needs to be done and Carnewal is the way!

I will let you know how I get on.

Engine bay - just unplug the solenoid.
I'm on my phone at the moment but when I get home I'll post a picture of it.
