I could see how a boggo Golf R might seem a little mundane next to a Boxster but I love mine. I've had it mapped up to 400 lbft of torque mind, that transforms it into a total wolf in sheep's clothing weapon. R8 has 400 lbft by comparison. I'd struggle to see how any car could get away from my R during the winter months, it's such an effortless rocket.
The intention was not to discard the Golf R as a great tool. I was looking at getting one myself, even considering an M2 Competition with several m performance upgrades. The thing is that these cars are ‘still’ a Golf and a 2 Series on steroids, as opposed to purposely built sports cars. The point is that maybe we shouldn’t be comparing between what are essentially fast small family cars, with a two seater purposely built sports car. On the comment about lbft, and whilst I agree these make a difference (mostly on track on a straight line, and not on road use) there seems to be be a manufacturers marketing race to beef up numbers. The reason why I choose my Boxster over many other cars is the handling and connection I feel with the it, not how many ponies it has in its engine.
Good weekend to everyone !
For a practical 'hotish' hatch, to have alongside a Porsche, I've had a couple of Golf GTDs, as loan cars, and they are superb for road use. Huge level of standard equipment, great performance (no doubt tuneable), but best of all - 'Dieselgate' or not - genuine 50 mpg.
Do prefer the Golfs in 3 doors though - much sportier looking than the 5 doors, which look a bit too boxy to my eyes.

I am currently driving my 79th 981, will never change.
79th ....... how does that ever happen, you must lose fortunes in depreciation and dealer margins.
when i say mundane i mean that as a compliment to the Golf R. i have had one..
as a quick a-b car its great at what it does but its nothing that particularly excites. its very capable..but does little to the ear in terms of seduction...
thats my point on the 718 GTS...its clearly very very capable and is a level above the 718 S (akin to a Golf GTI - Golf R) and the 981 GTS.
But....when i got out of it it felt like i had driven a Golf R..

My warranty renewal will come down to whether my Zunsport grilles will be "overlooked" or not.
Issues seem to be minimal, but dynamic engine/transmission mounts have failed on a few cars and I think 3rd gear on the odd vehicle in the US as on the GT4. Besides that, probably just the odd isolated incident e.g. PCM failure, PASM shocks etc.

I've heard it's fine with Zunsport, I have then too. Dunno whether to add another years warranty or keep as slush fund.Issues seem to be minimal, but dynamic engine/transmission mounts have failed on a few cars and I think 3rd gear on the odd vehicle in the US as on the GT4. Just for reference, Wolverhampton OPC have a 981 GTS with ZunnSport grilles on that I am enquiring about, at least I think they?

Should probably give you a good indication that they'd overlook them for an extended warranty. I am properly in the PDK or not to PDK boat at the moment, that one listed has everything I want, apart from being a manual, I should add, I still haven't driven a PDK car, but considering the whole OPC network only has 30 Cayman S/GTS now.... And none of my local OPC's (Reading, Portsmouth Guildford) have any) arranging test drives is gonna be tricky in itself!

I thought I wanted a manual but a lovely Sapphire Blue car appeared with PDK and I'm now utterly sold. I have older manual cars but PDK allows the car to have so many personalities from effortlessly easing its way through slow moving traffic to B road weapon. In short it makes the car more useable and enjoyable for me; much more than a Sunday morning car.

Yep, they're Zunsport grilles. No GTS interior pack on that car otherwise it's a nice spec.http://locator.porsche.com/ipl-customer/ipl/detail...

Guys, anyone not extended there warranty on the GTS? Anyone had issues inside / outside of warranty? My GTS is on 8500 miles and does about 3000 a year.
Cheers
I have a BGTS which has covered 14k miles in just over three years. This time last year I had a dynamic engine mount fail whilst the car was still under the three years warranty, and just after I took out the extended warranty the air con condenser failed - fortunately not due to stones. The cost of replacing the condenser at an OPC was roughly the cost of a years warranty so paid for within the first month! The warranty isn’t cheap, granted but neither is the cost of replacing failed components on a Porsche outside warranty. It is pretty comprehensive in fairness and even includes failure of xenon light bulbs. I have it just for piece of mind.Cheers
