*Bump*

Just picked up a 981 GTS Manual in Guards Red.

Coming from a 987.2 Cayman S, all I can say is wow! The 987 was a cracking bit of kit and I fell in love with that car over two and half great ownership years. Alas, I got a good price and fancied an upgrade and I am absolutely smitten already.
Interested in your thoughts compared to the 987. Really like the look of these but struggling to see 2.5x the value of my 987 in the upgrade.

Just bought a 981 GTS based on all the good words on the forums.

I have to say I'm regretting my choice. I think I fell for the "sound" myth over better performing cars, it's distinctly average, nothing like all the fawning nonsense posted about it on here.

My review will follow soon, but I'd have to politely suggest people don't get caught up in all the internet hype about a pretty average car.
Well i owned a 981 gts for 2.5 years and I would politely suggest you are talking out of the thing you sit on

I ultimately found it "too good" if that makes any sense and want to get back into managing the quirky weight-transfer of an older 911 (had 993 & 964 before this)

I might get on the phone to Greig - I'll definitely have to see it, before it moves on again.

Fair enough. If it's specifically just the 981 GTS that you don't rate, why not try the 987 or 718 models, or even the GT4s? You might enjoy one of those more.

Personally I drove a 718 base at the PEC and, whilst I loved the day and the instructor was excellent, I left feeling like I wasn't sure if I even wanted a Cayman at all anymore. I was pretty open to suggestions but the 718 base left me cold, so I know the feeling. Maybe a 718 GTS 4.0 would've excited me more, but I can't be bothered waiting 12 months for one. I drove the 981 GTS and just wanted it immediately.

People have their allegiances in the Cayman range, but you'll struggle to find a bad review of any of them, so maybe shop around and check out some different models.

Possibly a test drive would have saved you from making this mistake.

The good news for you is that there are still lots of people who think it’s a good car and you’ll have no bother selling it and moving back to the better cars to which you are accustomed.

Haha, really?! laugh

What's wrong with people. Just buy the car you like and forget about what other people enjoy driving. What do people get out of vehemently disparaging other people's choices? It just makes you look weird and insecure.

On that note, my girlfriend had her Christmas party last night and some "petrol head" told her that her boyfriend bought a Cayman as he couldn't afford a 911 (cute and inaccurate), and her Abarth 124 Spider is a hairdressers car (I, along with the few people every week who wind down their window to ask what it is, or just give a thumbs up, clearly disagree). He drives an S4 apparently. Strange world.

I brought my 2nd GTS after not having one for 3 years this July, it was great to get back in it BUT I got it 1 week before before our first child was born and yeah I haven't really had time to use it. I drop into the office now and again and use it but its not the same as getting some fun drives in. Its now the 3 of us out all the time and I'm generally at home, so I am not really sure if I should keep it or let it go for a few years before getting something fun again, just seems a waste!

You know, in all honestly, it's not 2.5x the car. I adored and still do, my 987.2. It was my first Porsche but beyond that, it really punched above its weight. It was fast enough in a straight line to lose your licence if you used all the power, the handling was great, tons of mechanical grip but adjustable and progressive when it did start to let go, the gen2 interior imo is a big upgrade over the gen1 and the nav etc made it very liveable as a daily/semi-daily.

Weirdly, when I first got into the GTS, I was so giddy and excited but when I popped it into first and pulled away it felt EXACTLY the same as the 987.2. There is a "911 feel" joke in there somewhere. To be honest I have driven a 718 and it too felt, "the same" which is a good thing. The DNA of the car goes through the models, suffice to say with different interiors, engines, noises etc.

Is it worth 2.5x the value of a 987? No. Is it an upgrade in the interior, noise, looks etc? Yes. Did I buy one because I had a good year at work and fancied a change? Yes. Did I get a better price for my 987 than I paid for it? Yes. Is it any faster in the real world? Not by much. Am I smitten regardless? Yes.

Would I suggest a 981 S, or perhaps a well-sorted, run out 987.2 S? Yes.

HA!

I mean, I couldn't give AF what someone else on the web thinks of my car, there are very few people's opinions in real life I respect enough to colour my buying decisions. But if you don't like the car/didn't float your boat - no worries - best of luck finding a car that can.

That being said - I didn't try the car before buying laugh

last time I was up there they had a lovely gt silver GT4 for sale that I think they had lowered the gear ratios on too..now that would be something I'd love to try, out of my pay grade tho!

Thanks for the reply... you haven't made the decision any easier! laugh Just went out for a lunchtime blast in the 987 and loved it for all the reasons you mention. Windows down, heated seats on, PSE ON! biggrin

Hopefully that fix will keep me out of the classifieds a bit longer!

you hadn't tried a GTS or at least a 981 at all or you didn't try that specific car?

actually i missed a trick...

should have added:

- fell for the sound "myth"

- prefers better performing cars

- refers to the overwhelmingly positive owner/user reports and press reviews about the car as "fawning nonsense"

i too am looking forward to the review and some pics

lol, I missed this, but that one isn’t me guys, you know I’ve no issues posting my own thoughts under my own account.

Shock horror someone doesn’t like a 981 GTS surely not…

I hadn't tried either. I'd have friends who have Caymans 981/718 which I have driven - it's a Cayman - not going from a Cayman to an F-Type so wasn't concerned to be honest.

Saw it online, done the deal, first time driving it was en route home.
