I'm considering upgrading the poor headlamp bulbs in my 987CS to one of the higher output versions such as these:

Anyone done it and is it worth it?

I did it, still pants. still cannot tell they are on if you have street light they don't even show up on the road
at night I drive with fogs on , on non lit roads, but you get hassle here for doing that (pointless hassle) as fogs on is still duller than my Mini dipped beam with xenons or any 4x4 with xenons.

AS I have posted before NEVER been flashed with my fogs on in the R, get flashed once a week in the mini as they are so bright.

temped to fit rally bulbs, but then the clocks change soon so will not be so bad.

can take a pic tonight of mine if you wish but don't waist your time imo.

Osram Rallye or leave alone
Not sure how modern cars get away with such bright lights, I have to dip my rear view in the R if a Merc is behind me.

you might even get less range with blue vision than oem !!!

On my previous 986 I used the Ring Xenonmax and it worked well. I think the newer version is Ring Ultima.

Simple replacement LED bulbs are now being developed. Already available for 928s and currently being tested on 964s. It should only be a matter of time before they're available for other models. Here's a link to the bulbs (no affiliation):

Apparently the biggest problem with LED headlight bulbs is that they don't produce any material heat which means in the ice cold winter mornings, your headlights can freeze over...(apparently)

I'd still be tempted with them I think, don't the new Audi A8 and other cars have LED headlights now?

Worth a read...

I have CREE led sidelights alongside my Litronics and haven't noticed any problems with ice. Not that it has been that cold.

Thanks Beanoir that's interesting information and sounds like a question to ask (I'm considering them for the 964). I guess the likes of Audi will already have done something with their LED headlights to solve that issue.

I have also found these http://www.horizonleds.co.uk/headlamp-cree-led/led... - but not sure how easy they are to fit given the lighting pods that Caymans use.

I fitted a proper Xenon conversion kit to my previous 993, made a huge difference. I recently did the same thing to my Golf runaround, again a massive difference and the kits are cheaper now (under £15 for 2 bulbs, 2 ballast packs and a hole saw via a Chinese eBay seller) and also the ballast packs are a lot smaller (which would have been really handy on the 993, where the ones I used were a bit bulky).

I chose the colour/temperature 6000K but I believe a factory bulb to be more like 4500k-5000K (the higher up you go the more blue, then purple, the light becomes).

Bright LEDs certainly produce heat, but it's not out the front like a bulb. With a heatsink and fan it would be possible to provide warmth to the lens.
