Morning all,

bit of an issue with the car last night, haven't had it long so any advice welcome.

driving on motorway last night and car started with intermittent faint squeal/screech noise (sounds like a tight belt or dry bearing), then the low coolant light came on.

pulled into next services and filled up - sound intermittent.

noticed on way home quite a bit of white vapour from back of car, coolant light came on again.

on getting out there was quite a bit of steam coming from driver intake and generally around car.

any ideas?

I don't think it's head gasket as the car isn't down on power etc.

It could be the water pump as these are known to fail at some point.

You need to get the car recovered to a specialist as there is no way you should drive it given the fragility of these engines when it comes to them running too hot.

ok thanks.

just so i understand how do they fail? is it a case of them disintegrating and leaking coolant out onto the hot engine to cause the steam?

Either the bearings collapse knackering the seal or the seal fails, either way coolant pees out!

Understood! Thanks - will whip the lid off the cover tonight to view, would expect the pump will be being replaced over the weekend.

thanks to all on this - pulled the water pump on Saturday and I've never seen a bearing in such a state.

replaced and all is now well with the world.
