Some years ago, as part of my job, I was in a group tour of the Pirelli factory. When I asked the finance director why larger tyres for Jags and Mercs etc, which he admitted cost little more to manufactur than regular size tyres cost so much more to buy. He said, people with Jags and Mercs expect to pay more for their tyres. Changing the oil and filter on a Porsche is no more difficult than a Ka, but a Porsche is a special car with special prices apply.

Totally agree with your view of the world of premium brands. I have knowingly, and happily, bought every iPhone since the 3GS. Yes, I've paid top dollar compared to other brands, but I've enjoyed the ownership experience and always found the residual value to be good when eBaying them after 2 years.

I've just placed an order for my first ever Porsche (a Boxster GTS) but I'm anticipating an average annual outlay of about £1,000 - £1,200 for servicing and/or tyres, which I am happy to pay as part of the Porsche ownership experience. I had priced tyres, insurance, servicing, road tax and economy before making my purchase decision - happily the overall package proved financially acceptable (for my personal circumstances) for the opportunity to fulfil the dream of owning a Porsche.
Happy? As part of the ownership experience? I would be quite a lot happier to pay a reasonable sum rather than £1k for 28 minutes work from the drunken 17 year old on work experience.

You sound like the ideal customer for such brands

Stella Artois had a "reassuringly expensive" theme to their ads not so long ago. I notice that now Stella is reassuringly cheap. It would be nice to think that Porsche would have a similar rethink - but I'm far from hopeful...
