As per my first post last wekk , finally bought my cayman at the weekend , love it !!!

but think I got suckered into buying a warranty that's not worth the paper its written on

had a little quibble with the garage over a minor matter and they flatly refused to do anything about it

(stain on the boot liner) would have only cost £50

so with this attitude i'm thinking this warranty i've bought is a load of crap ! :-(

its meant to include a minor service as well , which i was going to get done within the year , then my major service at a specialist , which is due in 20 months time

how many of us have warranty's ??

Just thinking I might sack it off

I only do 5K miles a year as have a home office , I know a fault can happen anytime but obviously less chance with less miles

Stain? Why would any warranty cover that? Or am I missing something?

Opc warranties and maintenance plans such as offered by Hartech are the only ones worth considering imo. The only other alternative is to keep an emergency fund which is the option I've chosen

You'd be better starting a thread with a poll!

ha ha sorry , this wasn't my warranty point !!

I discovered a stain in the front boot carpet , obviously the tyre weld had leaked and they had covered it up with a mat

I asked them about it and said would they stump up £50 for a used one I had found on the internet
and the attitude was awful , basically said , you can't see it so it doesn't matter and I said thats not the point I've just spent a lot of money on a car and I want it perfect , I know its there

I know its only £50 and I will buy it but its the principal

this kinda led me to think come 'free' service time which is included in the warranty its going to be a load of st and anything I try to claim on the warranty would be turned down anyway

I don't have one on mine, I'm setting aside a slush fund to solve problems. It had a minor a little while back (first for me, had the car since April) and that came up with a few bits that need doing and I was aware of a few others (lack of A/C & rattly exhaust).

I had what seemed a decent warranty on my A5 and they refused to payout when the electromechanical release failed for the fuel filler, this has put me off bothering, unless it was a cast-iron dealer one (i.e. OPC).

Would be better as a poll as someone mentioned. But I don't have one on my Cayman and nor does my brother on his Spyder.

Two things have failed on the car (A/C pipe and SPP amplifier) that would have been fixed by the warranty in the 5+ years I've had mine. Cost to have them fixed was £540. So I'm still up by a significant amount when you consider that on top of your warranty, you're tied to an OPC for servicing and parts and check ups.

I had warranty wise, cost about £500 fir a year and they paid out about £400 for broken gear linkages

Then i had wms group cover, came with the car and i extended for 2 years for about £1k

Has paid out for broken pse valve and 5 new coil packs and a new ignition switch so far but not the new gearbox it needed. On the basis that it doesn't pay for bore scoring and has only just paid for itself i wont renew but based on the above i don't subscribe to the view that these types of warranties bever pay out

Everything is a wear and tear item, or some other weasel excuse with these.

Unless you really would be in difficulty getting the cash for a large unexpected bill, you are much better self-insuring in my opinion. Five years of Porsche warranty payments plus 118 point checks adds up to a lot of money that stays in your pocket if are lucky, or covers all the small repairs that the warranty would reject anyway if not, not to mention paying for tyres, brakes, etc...

I sold my 911 which was not under warranty as the fear of large bills spoilt the ownership.

I bought a PDK Boxster with a 2 year warranty.

It's at the main dealer now having a new gearbox and flywheel fitted.

I've just bought a gen 2 Cayman s, I'm deliberating whether or not to take out an OPC warranty.

Apparently I have to own the car for 3 months before I can take one out, subject to the 111 point check.

I bought a 2008 Cayman 1 year ago from OPC with 2 year warranty. At first I was dubious about the warranty having paid through the nose for a Porsche battery, but since then I've had distribution box replaced, both window regulators, all idler pulleys, steering pump, water pump, a/c condensers and exhaust bolts all replaced under warranty. That lot would have cost more than the price of the warranty, which was £1320.

How long did you own it for?

I owned it for 3 years, it was 10 months old when I bought it with 9k on the clock. When I sold it back to the OPC it had done 22k and had been very well looked after by me, they sold it on after a few weeks. I recently saw it had sold via Ray Northway Porsche specialist.

No warranty for me. (987.1 3.4S)

I've had mine three years and I think most of my spend has been on 'wear and tear' items such as springs, shocks, exhaust fixings etc. I've had no reliability issues but saying that has probably just jinxed it.

I would be interested in the maintenance type arrangement but these seem to be pretty scarce. I'm aware of two specialists that offer them, are there many more? Anyone got any experience of the JMG Plan in Dorset?

Thanks for your view on this plan cmoose. You raise some interesting points regarding the very possible costs that could still be incurred within the plan in the event of serious engine problems.

My car is just beyond the bounds of the OPC extended warranty option now so perhaps continuing with the emergency fund (and fingers crossed) is still the way to go.

I've had my Boxster for nearly six years (bought it from the local OPC at 18 months old) and renewed the Porsche warranty for the third time this year.

So far this has more than paid for itself having had a breakdown in France due to coil pack failure, new suspension bushes, RMS replaced (apparently that was an engine out job and they had the car 4 days so god knows what that cost and I had use of a 991), new battery (yes they replaced that under warranty at 3 years old), coolant hoses replaced and various other bits and bobs when it was in for servicing. The car is used but not everyday and has only done 26k miles so far.

So for me it's worked out, there will be others who's cars have never seen a spanner other than maintenance.

I will be renewing the warranty on the Macan next year as I'd rather have the comfort it provides that the risk of not having it.

I just thought I'd update my comment on here as the car is currently at GT One having a whole load of work done. The warranty with WMS group has just agreed to pay for:

  • A new coolant header tank (although not coolant, new cap, new level sender)
  • A new air con condensor
  • A snapped road spring
They are paying £900 towards these items so I am pretty pleased overall

Bearing in mind the same policy previously paid out for:

  • 5 new coil packs
  • New ignition switch
  • PSE actuator valve
This is all for a policy that came with the car that I extended for 2 years for £1050 so it has easily paid for itself and taken the sting out of a number of repairs

Still not sure I'd renew but just wanted to put it out there that not all 3rd party warranty companies weasil out of paying claims out

We don't share this parts policy. Ours is that we only fit good quality parts which we can properly back up and are happy to fit good quality OEM parts such as Sachs clutches, Textar brake pads etc.
