temperature display on 986 (2000)

Hi,
I've a 986 (registered 10/2000) with a/c but without the on-board computer fitted.
I thought if I asked a garage to enable the computer the dashboard should display the temperature, is that right? Can't remember where I read that but asked them to do it whilst they were sorting some other stuff, I thought it was the case. Anyway, have had it done (going to eventually get the OBC retrofitted) but there's no temp. display showing still.
Just wondering if anyone has done this and actually got the temp showing?
