It must be similar on the 981. I have had the issue on both my 986 and my newer 981. I do the spinning the hamster wheel thing to get it going but it's a PIA so a fix sounds good.

I have just bought a lovely '62 plate manual Boxster S [dark metalic blue, tan/sand leather; PASM, PSE] from Targa Florio Cars. Not had much chance to stretch its legs yet, but a great step forward from my manual 350 SLK in terms of dynamics, driving enjoyment and responsiveness. But this afternoon [continuous rain of course] the heater fan did not kick in leaving me well steamed up, all round. I'm afraid I didn't believe the 'it only takes 5 mins' line in this blog - but its all true, and now blowing like a banshee and clear windows. Many thanks indeed for your help and assistance
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/2.gif and sorry for not believing your hard won knowledge.

I'm sure everything else I will be reading in these blogs will be just as believable ............. I'm very much enjoying them, and learning lots of good/useful things.

I've had my 2015 plate 981 for 5 months, just been away for a week and found the same problem as everyone else on here when I started it up. Very annoying as I had to drive 10 miles to an hospital appointment with the windows open on a freezing morning to keep the screen clear. Fortunately I was free that afternoon for the dealer to fix it but it was a couple of hours wasted there and back. In anticipation of getting a new fan fitted for peace of mind can anyone give me the approximate UK cost please? The independent I bought the car from are very good but it's not under warranty.
Following on from the drain pipe blockage issue ( checked by the dealer foc) I'm less than impressed with Porsche at present. Thanks for the excellent pics to fix it btw but I'm past tinkering at my age.

It's a 5 minute job to free the fan off on the rare occasion it gets stuck. Personally, I'd live with it until it happens regularly or completely seizes.

Did your car flood in the footwell? I have had drains blocking with my previous 987 and my current 981. First time it happened Porsche GB covered the cost but this time it has cost me £1,500 for cleaning and a new amp, which got ruined by the rain as it's situated under the driver's seat. Sadly I won't be getting another Porsche convertible as the chaps at Guildford told me the 911 has the same system of drains.

Hi RichB, no my car didn't get wet inside fortunately. I picked up the problem on here and got a call from the dealer to drop the car in before I progressed with it myself. Sorry to hear about your problems, I'm not impressed with Porsche on this but my independent dealer's been very good.
I always wash the car by hand now with no high powered water jets.

Also, when i enquired with Porsche, the part number hadnt changed, so if id bought a new one, id have just being re-fitting a newer version of the same useless part. I left it as it was.

Unfortunately it's the rainwater drains behind the doors where the water runs off the hood. They get blocked with general gunk and detritus.

We really need a keen diy'er to remove the motor and see if its fixable or swappable for another with the same dimensions that wont keep seizing.

Just had the same happen with my 2012 991.

Went away for a week over xmas and when I came back no aircon fan so followed all the instructions throughout this topic and my fan was definitely stuck, but it gave up easily and worked under power when I put it back together.

Thanks for all the advice.

The brushes stick within the motor; open the bonnet, lift the cover and locate the pre-filter (it curls upwards on the nearside). Lift the plastic lid that covers it and you see the fan inside - maybe need a torch. Reach in - ignition off! - and spin the fan by hand - if it's indeed stuck it will free off with a gentle twist.

Test system, refit covers.

The fan has been modified in the last year or so to counteract the issue
Amazing. Thanks!!

Timely that its this time of the year again and my fan has now stuck after 2 years of no issues lol.
Will be using the above trick and hopefully it won't happen again!

Yeah I've not had this for a while. Probably 2 years for me too.
