And mine before that . Love it . Really wish I hadn't sold , but I only have storage for one .

Sold for incoming GT4 - then Targa GTS -then 981 Spyder - then Macan Turbo PP - then 987 Spyder and now 991.2 GT3 . Would love the R back at some point in the future . Most of the boxes I wanted to tick have been now (apart from an RS ) , so time to settle down with something for a bit

Nice garage rotation and some pretty special cars you’ve had there. Can I ask which was your favourite?

And how did the Targa GTS compare? It’s a box I haven’t ticked yet but an itch I get regularly.

Had a few pre viper R aswell ... white R , 996.1 , 997.1 and 991.1 GT3 ‘s .

Absolutely no doubt the current 991.2 Manual GT3 is the ultimate car I’ve owned ....but several of the others would easily make it back into the Garage for other reasons ie .

Best Value and use as a daily - Cayman R
Best sunny day sunday car - 981 Spyder
Coolest and road trip car - Targa GTS
Best all rounder without going to GT3 spend -GT4 .

Could easily see myself in any of the above again . Probably miss the Targa the most as I won’t get my spec again and I didn’t keep it long enough.

987 Spyder was fantastic but narrowly pipped by 981 as I occasionally didn’t use 987 when I could of as the roof was a bit of pain .

991.1 GT3 just didn’t get on with the PDK.

Actually I’d have them all back bar the 991.1 .

Thanks for that info and your Targa looked lovely. I’ve got a Spyder and a Targa on my radar. A new Spyder (if announced in March and n/a) would be great and if not maybe a Targa towards the end of the year perhaps. I’ve just taken delivery of a 991.2GT3 in Manual so I mustn’t be too greedy right now - fabulous Car and full of feel!

Might be worth looking at my old 987S, known as the unicorn as it had every box ticked when specced by Porsche management in 2010. Currently for sale at Jon Seal in Yorkshire. They don’t mention the full leather but it has it.

Had a look at the add ..but would I always be thinking it's not an R
Take on board all that has been spent on the car and the service history possibly give then a call .Do you know the history owners wise ,it says warranty is on the car do you know if it the Porsche one ,how good are the PCCB as will never track it so will not get hard use .Are the 981 wheels better than the 987 that I assume came standard with the car

Always interesting to hear peoples thoughts on spec. Am I the only who actively would not want a leather dash? Lovely in my other halves 911, but to me it doesn't work in a car with alcantara seats, steering wheel and armrest. I actually think with the buckets the leather steering wheel looks pretty bad.

you will always want the R when you see one, it's that simple, and yes 20" 981 wheels on a 987 is daft, makes the ratios longer and weigh more ! Plus tyres will cost more , the car came with the 19" Spyder wheels the lightest and best wheels Porsche make for the Cayman S, you would want those on it for sure.

As for the unicorn name, well I have no words, it's a PDK Cayman S don't be fooled into anything else. It's a nice spec but it's an expensive car.

If you want an R you're right not to compromise. I wavered a little when looking for my R because I kept missing out (when they are well priced they sell fast) but I'm glad I hung in there until I found one. It's the little differences between the R and the S that make the R feel that little bit more special. Really enjoyed the two years that I've had it for now and have been more than happy with the PDK. Will likely change it this year to scratch the GT4 itch before I get too old!

I think you are both correct it is not an R and never will be .Any thoughts on the 2 I mentioned .Like the comfy seats the 2 Spyders have Buckets not comfy on a long run but look good as the 918's do .PDK is what I would prefer having 2 manuals.

For me the buckets were a must have for my R. It's part of the experience and have found zero issues with them in the comfy stakes on long trips.

The lack of Nav did concern me (more so than the lack of leather which I fortunately had in both my 997 GTS and the GT4). However after speaking to Tom at 911V who’s Porsche knowledge I respect a lot it became obvious that the perfect R might not exist and if it does it won’t come up for sale!
Nav solution is being sorted prior to collection - OE system (CDR or PCM) is pretty crap anyway so a sympathetically instaled Kenwood / apple car play head unit with DAB, Garmin Nav, Phone etc is my solution and is easily returned to OE if necessary for selling in the future.
In the meantime if a manual car comes up for sale with buckets, Spyders, PSE, short shift, Chrono, Nav, leather, ceramics, Xenons, alacantara pack, 1 owner, 5k miles and in immaculate Guards Red please let me know (and pinch yourself to wake from the dream...LOL)
Roll on delivery of my R.....
congrats, gorgeous car you have there, I looked at it when the owner had it before 911V bought it/ sold it on his behalf and it's a real stunner I got it down to your car and the one I bought and was literally changing preferance day to day

enjoy, loving mine and it's a keeper smile

I think the issue is age related ...in my 70's laugh

the normal seats are much harder on the bum, they give me numb bum, the folding I can full a full day back from the ring in them no issue.

the LWB give me back pain and the normal seats give me bum ache so it's not an age thing for me it a comfort thing and being connected to the car thing.

Steve is about my build so I guess he also fits in the folding like a glove.

Bloody awful things (as are the CGT lightweight buckets fitted in the 997 GT models) though both look lovely and are beautifully manufactured.

Porsche used to be excellent at the seat height thing, but with the folding buckets they lost their way and designed a seat that's more about style over substance. The way they designed the shell makes it all but impossible to fabricate side mounts that enable it to be significantly lowered. If I'd not sold my R, I'd have had to remove the sliders and gone solid mounted to the floor.

Though the R's chassis was good enough to warrant some proper seats along the lines of these :

http://www.recaro-seats.co.uk/racing-seats/pole-po...

or these :

http://www.recaro-seats.co.uk/racing-seats/profi-s...

get them custom trimmed to match the interior stitching of the R's cabin, job's a good 'un.

Or... if you can find some this side of the pond, a pair of 996 GT3 buckets (which quite frankly are THE best/most comfortable seats ever fitted to any Porsche)

I don't think the modern person would fit in the 996 GT3 buckets lol

I also think you need to install the RECARO Pole Position (ABE) over the FIA one for road use..

but yes a nice seat and BMW fit them to all their trick cars and they only weigh 4kg !

Even the Audi TT sport had proper seats :-) I don't get the £20k Porsche seats at all, they are not even light !!!

Really looking forward to getting it once Tom has sorted the new head unit install for me. The car ticks all my boxes and the spec works for me, R's with manual box and arguably the essential options are rare cars in the UK so I acted quickly to secure this car.

What did you buy in the end and what swung your decision?

Is the previous owner (6 years) on pistonheads by any chance?

Don't laugh David, but the seats in my TTRS Plus (yep really) were utterly hopeless (too high, too hard and steering wheel too high in relation to them too) I fitted the Sparcos that I'd previously fitted into my 1M Coupe in to the Audi. Completely transformed it.

http://www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&...

Install was very much "get 'em in there" and not pretty as the original seats were so f*cking awful I was days away from selling the car !!
