Looking at getting a Cayman R, has anyone seen the white one with Ashgood, mileage is quite high but price reflects this. Didn't know everyones thoughts on it? Never owned a Porsche previously so keen to be steered in the right direction! Was looking at Cayman S but that one fell into the price bracket. Wouldn't have an issue owning a high mileage BMW/Audi just didn't know the vibe on an R, would the value drop out of it once it hits 90/100k?
I've driven this one. First I must say the guys at Ashgood are great. I think the price is great. You won't lose much on resale. It doesn't have the "halo" spec but if that's not an issue to you and you prefer a PDK to a manual (and there's no shame in that!), then it's a great buy.

Absolutely. 25Kg saving but I doubt there's any stock R or Sypder out there with the exception of any press car(s) without a stereo, AC, manual etc.

Cue someone stepping up and proving me wrong!! smile

Mine has the crappy standard stereo, but other than that, no AC, no BOSE, no sat-nav, buckets, Spyder wheels, manual, etc.

And of course, the titanium wheel bolts save a huge amount of weight hehe

Hi Josh.

I looked at the Ashgood R today. It looks well looked after, the condition of bodywork is good and I'd say its had some new aircon rads very recently. The interior is in fairly good condition as well with only slight wear to the driver's seat stitching, the seatbelts and door pulls could do with a clean, something I'm sure Ashwood would do given their reputation. Unfortunately, this car made me realise that I need the carbon buckets and a manual. I still reckon the cars represents good value, even with the high mileage.

P.s Hi all, first post on the PH forums, (RS246 and Cliosport.net were some of my previous/current haunts). Having rented a 718 Cayman for the NC500 a few months ago I'm now hooked.

I met Ian964 at Brands Hatch a few weeks ago and after a couple of passenger laps, I'm now looking for a White manual R, with PSE, Chrono buckets, and aircon. Let me know if anyone is thinking of selling.

Cheers
Hi Doug,

Good to meet you at Brands, glad you enjoyed the pax laps! Thanks for the laps in your Clio, that's a fun car - Tom is now working out how to swap his 1.2 Clio for one!

Cheers
Ian

Q - what would (could) you replace a Cayman R with?

Mines is white, AC, Bluetooth, black spyder wheel, PCM, Short shifter, sports chrono, PSE - but no buckets....I really enjoy the car despite no buckets.

Had a go in a McLaren 570 a couple of weeks ago and getting tempted. Would need to shift the cayman for the McLaren. wife thinks I am mad and should save up for the McL and keep the Cayman for ever!

I think there are better cars out there. But honestly, for what it offers at its price is simply unique.
I dont think anything at £45k quite offers what a Cayman R does, its in a league of its own. iIts raw and analogue enough to offer a pure drive but still luxury and special enough to stand out on its own. Maybe a manual 981 GTS but still wouldnt offer quite what the R does in terms of specialness?

My shortlist of things i was intererted in was:

BMW 1M
Cayman R
Exige 240cup

All very different animals.

Youre probably right in needing to spend 570 money to get a big enough gain to make the change worthwhile.

I was always tempted by the R and particularly after a short ride out in Chris ABPs car which was predominantly to try the bucket seats for size. In the end though I plumped for a manual GTS with as low miles as possible . I know I'll be putting 6k a year on it and a 'low mileage' R at 30-35k miles would soon be plus 50k and not so appealing on resale. I also wanted adaptive dampers after not getting on with the sports chassis on my 997. Also got the PTV so best of both worlds for me. Still love the R and hope that you guys continue to enjoy them.

Likewise Ian, very nice to meet you. Your car has left a big impression! I'll just have to play the waiting game now. I thinking of doing another evening session at Brands next week (1st I think). Yes, the Clio is good fun, and cheap on consumables too!

How much did the Viper green R sell for? It's absolutely stunning, I wish I'd been in the market when that came up!

It's a shame the QCT car doesn't have aircon, otherwise, I'd have it. Not fussed on higher mileage cars - assuming they have been cared for. I've spoken to Porsche and a couple of specialists and it's not possible to retrofit - at any cost.

Was out in mine today in the sunshine, window down, glorious sound of the engine and exhaust all around me, didn't miss air con at all, was too busy enjoying the car smile

The Clio (track hack) doesn't have aircon and it bothers me when travelling to and from the track (I wish it didn't as it would certainly save me some money!). The R will be used for long road trips and I worry if I go down the non aircon route it will really bother me.

Perhaps I need to be less of a big girl!

If im entirely honest there has only been a couple of occasions where i missed AC in mine. Lets be honest, the freak weather we are having in the UK right now is exactly that, freakish. Normally its peeing down a cold or overcast day.
Once when i was in traffic queing into Stuttgart in 30c temps last year and this year at Goodwood FOS when getting back into the car at the end of a scorching hot day. Having said that, once youre moving, it really is no issue at all. Windows down and enjoy the sound of the exhaust smile

Im not sure if the Porsche system is the same as what i had on my Impreza, whereby when at sustained WOT the AC system would automatically turn off in order to give you maximum power anyway. So i have a roof vent in my Impreza for trackdays.
Tracktime in the R so far has been fine with no heat issues at all as far as im concerned. Not only am i not carrying the AC around, but i have no condensers to fail/rot or system to upkeep on the car either.

So 363 days of the year, the lack of AC really is no issue and i personally think it keeps true to the roots of the car having less equipment in order to save weight.

Appreciate everyone different, just my take on it having actually lived with a non AC Cayman R.

All fair points. I drove a non AC R with windows down and I was thinking I'd want my windows down all the time with that sound! I think the only consideration is resale but as long as it's factored into the price then that's fair and as long as you know it may take a wee bit longer to sell. That same R with AC would probably be £44-45K so I think it's fair value.

Difficult decision

Air con was a "must have" for me. Turned down a few that didn't have it when I was buying mine. I wouldn't even consider a vehicle in this day and age without air con.

I have aircon and wouldn't have bought a car without it because of resale issues (which this thread is demonstrating). I never turn it on though, besides the odd time when I'm in traffic to stop it going stale. If I get hot I open the windows. My only complaint with that is that there is a whistle from the passenger side while driving at pace with the windows down....

So, what I'm seeing from much of the recent posts is that AC is more about resale than anything else.

It's therefore good that I specced my car for me, rather than for the person who might buy it from me later.

Given that I've owned mine from new for over seven years and have no real desire to let it go, I'm happy with speccing a car for me, rather than the next owner smile
