As a prototype vehicle development engineer, I see first hand what goes into making and developing a product of this nature. So to have all that work, care and attention just sitting there is a total waste imo.

These are some of the finest drivers cars available at any price, so they should be enjoyed and driven. Many people could only ever dream of owning a Cayman R, I know I did.

Each to their own I guess.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll never be on my deathbed wishing I’d driven my Porsche less.
It is a strange behaviour. When I owned my R, the threads here constantly went on about the ‘perfect spec’. It appears that low mileage has been added to that. It seems ironic that the spec and talk was about the driving experience, yet few are apparently driven for fear of reducing their value.

Im with Frayz, cars that are only polished with super low mileage scare me. Service history is never more than a stamp in a book.

Theres usually no other work or maintenance and no doubt lots of short runs on the engine.

In the 5 months ive owned mine ive done 2000 miles, had a big service, sorted the master cylinder, had the geo sorted, done 4 track days, and found the gear linkage weak point and had that sorted.

If cars arent used problems or niggles can fester i think.

We're taking my old mans 964 RS(ish) to Tuscany in summer and at the moment trying to rack up as much varied mileage as possible as a test. Using a car is the only way to make sure its the best it can be in my view.

Completely agree with the point on service history. A stamp every year is good but a fat folder of receipts, previous wheel alignments etc is a way more comforting.

My Elise has everything in its service history including pictures of it on the line, PDI paperwork, email correspondence with specialists, and even scraps of paper with tyre pressures written on! It has 50,000miles all documented and cross-referenced

I will be doing the same for my R.

There are a few a current or ex owners of 964s on here. What is the consensus on how the two compare?

I am toying with replacing my 964 (I've had for 7 years) with a manual R but am worried it won't be such an event for normal road driving (while I am certain is much faster on track - although I only do 2 or 3 a year).

I can't have both (but could keep the 964 if I went for a standard 987 S...) Struggling with the decision-making.

My old man has a 964 with RS running gear, its certainly more of an event than the Cayman R trundling along. But when pushed the Cayman R is a really special machine.

I have a manual 964 and had a PDK R. The 964 is still mine and I’m adding a PDK 987 Spyder to the garage.

For me, the R was a weapon on back roads. It was lithe and had great turn in. On one winding road trip, a 991 GT3 couldn’t shake me off its tail. However it was also the shortest ownership of all my cars. At the time I was tracking the 964 and wanted to be more competitive. The R easily outran the air cooled cars but I couldn’t keep up with the GT3s. It was neither Arthur nor Martha. The ownership profile is also different. I found the 964 community more varied with no ‘perfect spec’ talk. I would own both and sell the one that doesn’t float my boat. Once you sell the 964 it’s hard to go back.

The other thing to factor is your car personality. I am constantly changing my car spec. The R stifled that and didn’t look that different to a Cayman. The Spyder will hopefully be unique enough to be satisfied with the OE set up.

The biggest issue with the CR is the talk of spec and values.
Which funny enough, is no fault of the car. wink

Sun was out today, so drove mine to work, windows down, radio off... it was absolute bliss. smile

Got an annoying little job done this morning I’ve been wanting to do for ages. Took all of 20 min tops and makes a nice difference to the finish of the car when opening the tail gate.
These tiny sections of PPF are approx 40mm x 50mm and are £12 plus vat each from an OPC.

I had some spare 3M film so just made my own.

Frayz, have you done the wee bits inside the door openings too? They have gone a bit of a mess on mine and are on the list of things to sort.

Hi Paul.

Actually I’ve got those coming from the OPC as they’re like £2.50 each and I’ve just ordered a full coolant hose kit for the front end.
I could justify the £5 for the door ones but couldn’t justify the near £30 for the rear ones that are barely any larger. Lol.
Got loads of little jobs to do on it, just been waiting for the weather to break and get some time to do it.
Having your first child (little girl born in Jan) kinda consumes all available hours at the mo. biggrin

Useful to know! I have a pile of bits of PPF from when I did my bike. It's not up to doing bodywork on full show but certainly good enough to do the wee bits like the boot and door gaps.

When you do the hoses, fancy taking some pics showing the job?

Haha, funny enough i did my bikes with iy too. And the Mrs pram as i know its going to get scratched in and out of her car. I know im anal, ive no excuses biggrin

Of course i'll take pics for you mate.

I've got the smallest of weeps from the OS rad return hose. So ive ordered every hose for the front end including the cross over pipes. These are above the front subframe, so theres a good chance i'll have to drop that slightly. I have seen people do it without dropping the subframe but we'll see. Its a bit of faff but im sure it'll be fine.
Ive been told by the Porsche techs at RPM Technik that the reason they corrode is moiture gets between the couplings and blows them out. I have been advised that once changed i should spray Waxoil onto the coupling arears to stop water ingress and they will never corrode again.

Gents...

If anyone is looking for a Cayman R...at Perth OPC there is a two owner, Black, 19k miles, manual, carbon buckets, no Xenon's though, it's very nice.
£48k is the asking price.

I saw it today while picking my car up.

Hi all, Though I`ve read quite a bit of thread (thanks guys really interesting!) I`m new poster here.

I know this is a chestnut but did anyone notice that this

seemed to sell a couple of days ago but has just been re-advertised by someone new again on ebay (not the salvage guy who seemed to have a problem with honesty). The money is pretty much the same as I remember it as it was being offered at last time so the salvage guy must have let it go at under thirty and nursed quite a loss. (At least reading between the lines I`d understood he`d bought from the insurance company at thirty and he said he did the repair work himself)

Did anyone go and see this car? Does anyone know if, beyond damage to wing/pillar/rear offside/windscreen already noted on this forum, there is anything else wrong with it? Notably anything that may affect handling or that is mechanical in any way?

By way of introduction I`ve two cars, both bms a 330i for daily and an e61 M5 for hols and summer. They`re both estates, both na, ones a straight six the other V10. Love em both. Spent a lot of time as a kid ripping up fields in cortinas and escorts but have only once tracked (earlier this year the 330i) and it was a hoot! Plenty more planned though and would like something more focused going forwards smile

Don’t know it, but had a nose around it last week when I was down at RPM. Looks tidy and on its money.

More PPF replaced today.
Amazing how you don’t really see them yellowing on the Peridot paint. However the fresh ones look noticeable better.
Another job ticked off.

Thanks. I test drive nicely this morning. Just trying to justify it alongside my 964 and decide if a Cayman S wouldn’t be a better choice for the 3 or 4 track days a year it would get in my ownership
