Thought so. It's closer to an S than an R in my opinion...and a high miler gen 2 S for that matter.

Not seen a black front lip spoiler before either, replaced or just an odd paint job when the front was resprayed.

As per other views on here, personally I wouldn't be tempted, even for £29k for all the reasons that have been stated (and certainly not the asking price of £35k). I would worry about being about to resell it when the time came, and how much you'd lose).

Especially when you think about other decent cars like the white CR that JZM recently sold which had 33k miles, manual with buckets, good service history etc. From memory that was marketed at c.£36k and still took around 6 months to sell (so who knows what sale price was privately agreed).

Apologies for the slow reply, I would like to keep mine as is because for me the alcantara is one of the bits which sets the CR apart. I'd be interested in the opposite swap ie my leather seat pads for your alcantara ones, but I think I know what your answer will be to that!
Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated. Was worth a shot huh! yep I'd be keen to keep my alcantera seat pads. As to the door handle trim - I'll probably save up and get them from SunCoast parts, as I spy them on there. Or does the 997/911 of that era use the same handles? if so I could look on eBay for used door cards and break them for parts.

Thanks
Julian

Oh, thanks, that is one sure way to put me off buying the R. But i appreciate your honesty. How can 918's and hi end Porsches of the 2011/12 era have been painted Basalt Black if it is a bad colour. Beats me. I guess I'll have to see it in real life tomorrow! ...but it cant be that bad surely?
Hi Julian - How did it go?

Went to see an R today in the same spec as the one I have secured for collection next week. Well, I don't know what to say other than WOW. My mind is blown! It is quite possibly the most beautiful Porsche shape and stance since the 930. It is the first time I have had chance to spend proper time walking around a 987, and though I have seen them before, what is it for why the R feels so purposeful? I guess it is the stance and rear wing, but it just looks way more purposeful. The Basalt Black I love. I was worrying way too much. I love the dimension it adds to the lustre - feels all the more premium. The interior having the leather dash and all bits and pieces really elevates the interior too. I am totally blown away! In my eyes it is one of the most beautiful cars of the modern era I have ever seen.

^^^ The R does look amazing and the standard 987 Cayman S is an absolute steal ATM.

Hi Julian,
I quite agree about the R. The public consensus seems to prefer the larger 981/718, but for me the 987 is much the prettier car. It has more sculpture and delicacy for my money and the more purposeful stance (20mm lower, splitter, superlative forged wheels and wing) of the R fits it perfectly. The 987 S, though a great car for the money, sits too high; the arch gap is excruciating.

I would have preferred smaller overhangs, particularly at the front where the need to fit golf clubs dictated design compromises over Pinky Lai's original styling, which was exquisite. I am an industrial (transportation) designer by training, though not currently practicing design. Come to that, not currently practicing anything; Covid ate my career!

I don't really care if the motoring public never realise that the 987 R is one of Porsche's finest cars both aesthetically and dynamically. I can just enjoy owning it quietly. My advice would certainly be that it looks great in any colour (mine is Platinum Silver, but I nearly bought a black one). Much better to pick a well looked-after car.

I look forward to hearing about your first impressions of your purchase.

Thank you! and thank you to all that have replied, really value all your support. I've probably done all your heads in of late!
That is a great word you use, sculpture - that is the key word and differentiator that makes it such an elegant car. And I agree with the stance, there is something about it that is way way more impressive and more dramatic than the rest of the 987 range. I guess the buckets and interior leather dash and all that jazz helps too.

So the front was designed to hold golf clubs? or the back and then the front changed as a result? I still haven't checked that my classical guitar case will fit in it the back, but I'm sure I can make it work!

Thanks again!

Mogsmex always uses a term to describe the appearance of a Cayman R on the move and that’s:

“it’ looks like it’s been poured all over the road”.

Couldn’t word it better.

They have zero flab hanging off them, nothing there that doesn’t need to be. The wheels sit perfectly in the arches, the low nose and perfectly flowing rear. The lines are utterly timeless imo and are akin to a classic sports car and I dare say lines we will never see on cars again.

It sounds as if you have settled any doubts that you may have had. It is part of what these forums are for, to chat and exchange advice with fellow enthusiasts. I am not surprised though as the R’s are a great car (or so I’ve heard).

And if you had decided to not go through with the deal I may have been very tempted myself to take a look at what you had rejected. 😉

I hope that it all goes well and best of luck. I look forward to hearing the first impressions so please do report back.

You won't regret it. I've had lots of Porsche over the years, old and new..the 987 R is possibly one of their finest cars in the last 20 years in my opinion.

Someone else said on here 'it's got just the right amount of everything'. And that to me sums it up perfectly.

A perfect car for todays roads.

Enjoy! thumbup

Thank you everyone again for your kind words of support and advice. Its a lovely community here huh.

One query - I have seen some R's there the Spyder Wheels are black with the silver lip and some where it is all silver. Was that an option originally for either, or have people had them repainted to all silver since?

I'll probably keep them black with the silver edge to begin - yet a black R with silver Spyder Wheels is quite a god look I feel.

All had the option off Black with the silver trim or all Silver .if you see any with all black they have been painted /refurbed .I prefer the Silver myself have them on my 987 Spyder . Golf clubs fit in the boot of the Spyder cannot comment on the R .

Hi Julian,

As already stated, silver or black/silver lip were the standard choice, though a few were specified from new (probably by dealers) with regular cast wheels. Madness!
A classical guitar in its case will fit in the rear boot (not the front compartment) if you point the neck up the centre of the car. It's a squeeze, but will go in. Not sure you would get a dreadnought in though. My OM steel string also fits, but is a similar size to a classical.

Haven't you picked the car up yet? Stop procrastinating and get it done man! wink

Thank you Jon. Good to know that the guitar will fit in the back.
I am picking it up Friday, as the car is in Wales, for which the lockdown restrictions were very strict - any journey in the country could only be 5 miles (or something like that). Now it is relaxed more, I'll be heading down this Friday coming to collect it. Also waiting means I can tax from the 1st of the month.

The drive back to London, via seeing my parents in Bristol (my hometown) will be a nice drive to allow me to get used to the car on some straights first. I recall when I bought a car out in the countryside and the initial drive was really stressful, narrow lanes, etc, whilst trying to get used to the car, which was a 68 Fastback, so I'd value more of a straight run initially!
