The car just developed this rattle sound, when driving at low speed after warming up, 0-15 m.p.h.looks like coming from the back? I have driven about 150 miles today in motorway, the sound goes away completely while driving high speed and there is no other symptoms apart from this sound during stationary or low speed? The sound was also stopping or reducing while moving the steering during stationary but it does not help anymore. Video below;

Recently has an IMS update, new clutch+flywheel, and loads of major works in the engine.

PS: no change on the oil and coolant levels, no sign of overheating and etc. so far. Some suggest it might be rear shock absorbers or heatshield?

Any feedback would be great! mad

Firstly, I would not be running that anymore!

Take it back to where you had the work done and get it checked out.

Doesn't actually sound completely dissimilar to the noise a friend's 987 made with a knacker water pump.

But haven't you had about 16 new water pumps in this thing?

Not having much luck are you?! If it's any consolation, my car is probably fked, too. Tis the season to lose an engine! Well, let's hope not!

It's quite strange, the car is absolutely silent while driving. First I thought it has to do with steering, as while moving the steering slowly left-right at a traffic light, the noise was going away and it only develops after driving a few miles.

Ours does this, I think it's the heat shield above the exhaust rattling. I could be wrong, best to get it looked at if you're worried

If it's heat shield, I'm wondering how come the steering was affecting the noise while stationary? Well not anymore.

I would check anything running off the aux belt ie waterpump and PAS.

Thank you all.

Loads of things to be checked this weekend, (Water pump and power steering fluid has been checked already bu no leak)

Another strange observation, If the car is on a slope (seen below) the noise disappears. On motorway, it's absolutely silent though, I have not felt any strange reaction from clutch, or engine so far while driving.

Sorry to hear that - which engine does yours have?

This.

Equally, mine made a similar rattle (drowned out at speed by everything else) that turned out to be a loose heat shield clamp thing round one of the exhaust manifolds. 2 mins at the OPC FOC and it was solved.

Thanks all. It has been confirmed, Bloody heat shields! biggrin

To inform others for similar issue in the future, this could well be Water pump as cmoose suggested earlier but here are also some other possibilities;

1 - Rear Shock Absorbers
2 - Steering Pump
3 - Exhaust / CAT
4 - Water pump
5- Broken or loose engine mount

Hallo
I just had a very similar rattling noise in my 987 and as I was searching for symptoms of the IMS failing, I came across this post.
The noise comes and goes and I have only heard it when stationary 2 times. I explained it to the local official Porsche dealer and I just came back from the big service but they say they haven't heard anything and they checked it thoroughly.
I'm very worried that the IMS might be failing but from what I understand this doesn't come and go it only gets worse so I'm hoping that the problem is a loose heat seal.
Can you advise me where about to look for a loose heat seal?
Can anyone tell me if the noise would come and go if it was an IMS failure?
Thank you

There are heat shields in the rear bumper corner recesses and over the cats.

jez, just remember posting this, totally scared the crap out of me back than! hehe

This, indeed was catalytic converter heat shields. They sound super-scary, when they go. A good indy must have a look properly though, before deciding that, anything might go wrong in there, one never knows! If it's heat-shields, super simple cheap solution
