Unrelated to your post, but I'll mention it in this post, the biggest surprise of the day was coming out preferring PDK over manual. If I was asked yesterday, I would have said exactly the same as the above poster, awesome spec by the way smile. However, I've changed my mind entirely. It may be having had a bit more seat time and the ability to push the car a bit more, but the PDK car was more fun and confidence inspiring than the manual. I had been put off by some reviews saying the PDK wasn't great with the 2.0, but I didn't find any of those criticisms true. In fact, I would have rather stayed with the PDK than move to the manual.

Ultimately the PEC day is well worth it not just for the driving experience but also exploring the various options available.
The length of the straights, particularly on the slower of the 2 handling circuits, is really not flattering of the ratios for the manual box. I was considering the PDK after my last PEC day, but was able to road test a manual 2.0 Cayman again since then. If I was only ever driving round the PEC tracks I'd go for PDK, but for the road, I still prefer the manual. I've got another PEC to come yet as well... wink

As Liam said, there is a noticeable difference in sound between the two engines. I've only seen a couple of reviews that have mentioned it and yes, there is some irony given the criticism of the 718's sound that this hasn't been picked up on more. You can get a hint of the difference about seven minutes into this review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT1JNv3Pk_M&t=... It's more noticeable in real life if you hear them back to back. I would characterise the 2.0 as being smoother and higher pitched, whereas the 2.5 is bassier, a bit louder and more mechanical. Personally, I prefer the sound of the 2.0.

As far as PSE is concerned, I was at the PEC today and drove a PDK equipped 2.0 with PSE and a manual 2.0 without PSE. For me there was very little difference between PSE and non-PSE from within the car, other than the PSE one being a tiny bit louder than the non-PSE when turned off. Strangely, the biggest difference in an exhaust note was on the non-PSE car when switched from ordinary to sport. This link gives a good example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVljJYr8stY I didn't miss the absence of PSE on the non-PSE car and found the sound quite adequate. There may well be a bigger difference from outside the car, but for me the cost against the additional noise isn't worth it as a driver.

On a colour note, they didn't have my combination together (graphite blue, graphite blue/crayon sportex and Carrrera Sport wheels) although all elements were on different cars. One car I drove had that interior and I'm very happy with my choice there. The best looking combination was a Cayman S in the showroom. Lava Orange, Agate full leather and satin Carrera wheels. It looked absolutely stunning and worthy of consideration for anyone interested in lava orange.

Ultimately the PEC day is well worth it not just for the driving experience but also exploring the various options available.
Hey Pinball, really useful post. I'm yet to experience a base Cayman. I test drove a CS without Pse, but there were no pops and bags on the overrun. Are you saying you dont get the pops and bangs with pse and sports mode on in the base Cayman? I've currently opted for pse for this very reason from what I've read elsewhere and dealers advice (ok I know I should treat this lightly) but now wondering if it's worth it.

Damn stressful all these spec choices, especially when you can try it. Hopefully PEC will sort me out

I agree with you on this and it looked stunning - so much so that I changed my order to match it.

I have since decided that seeing it under the showroom lights is one thing and that it might not age well so I have plumped for Carmine Red which I saw on the PEC day and also looked stunning. I think there is little risk of me disliking that after a few years.
I agree on the longevity of its appeal. It's also a bit too loud for me as a daily driver. I ended up going for graphite blue as it was a new colour and not as loud, but it's long term appeal may be questionable too.

I was at the Porsche experience day yesterday as well
Liked the graphite/crayon sportex a lot but I've had to do my final spec
The graphite blue part of the seats looked black/grey but on the config and on the internet it looks navy blue
I've gone for night blue with turbo wheels and black/crayon leather and was lucky enough to see the colour and wheels but not the interior
I was going for graphite blue car and there were plenty on display but thought in some light it was grey/ purple or grey and not blue enoughso changed it just before lockdown
They had a boxster with that interior when I was there, looked very nice.

Maybe I should road test another manual before lockdown then. I just found at the PEC it was the first time I really started to appreciate PDK.

I did get pops and bangs on the non PSE car. The second video I linked previously is representative of my experience with the non PSE car and switching between ordinary and sport mode. The difference with PSE is that it just amplifies the normal exhaust with a slight change in tone. I may be wrong, but my understanding is that the pops and bangs are determined by the engine mode, sport gives it while ordinary and sport plus doesn't. Ultimately the difference between the two exhaust modes and the appreciation of it is entirely subjective. There are many posts on here which go both ways on the subject. You will only be able to make a decision having heard them both first hand imo.

Thanks Pinball. I think your right, I just need to experience it. Been onto Porsche to book into PEC.

The PEC days seem to run on weekdays only - not weekends.
Anyone know if weekends are an option (chargeable maybe) ?

Otherwise i have to take time off work to drive a car the OPC dealers cant offer .

Thanks Ollie.
My dealer says the Sat option is chargeable - circa £600.

He also mentioned an option when a chassis number had been allocated (which i think means i can 'try' after I 'buy').

And, possibly in the pipelline, porsche might offer Sat (in future) for 718 customers due to extended delivery periods / lack of
suitably species demonstrator cars .

Have you not put a deposit down then? I have and was given the option for Saturday when I rang up. Might be wise seeing if you get away with it when you call PEC to book your experience. My car comes October.

Hear there's been a price increase on the Y2018 model and change of spec to include sat nav and connect on base Cayman. Apparently price changes don't effect those of us who are receiving there cars in 2017, even if we alter spec before lock down. Is that what others have been told too?

No thats not quite correct.

Basically, if your car is being built after week 22 (last week of May), you'll be incurring the price increase (although getting nav, connect+ and dab as standard).

Thanks for clarifying.

I assume 'extras' prices are remaining the same.

I am getting extremely fed up with Porsche.
In spite of ordering when the first Cayman demonstrators arrived in September, the basic specification has already altered and I cannot change my specification because of lock-down. Delivery is due in May. I have so far had 4 proposed delivery dates.

I wonder if the revised new specification will filter in before week 22 or will it change abruptly at that point?

I spoke to PEC directly too. They do offer Saturdays, no extra fee.
First available slot was 10th June.
That will probably be after I go into lock-down.
Ordered 1st Dec '16 - Cayman Base.

Bet you are. What are the delays? Only benefit you won't be hit by the inflated prices. Same spec car as I originally ordered (original spec had Nav and DAB) on the config. is now £2k more!!!

Thanks for asking.

1. Offered first available build slot on paying deposit, which was for Jan 17, declined believing that I had first available slot in Feb 17. (big mistake)
2. In Feb somehow found myself in second build slot, only one build slot allocated.
3. Offered March build slot in Stuttgart, offer withdrawn as build moved to Osnabruck.
4. Offered April build in Osnabruck.

I have dodged the price rise, will take the VED hit, lost a Stuttgart build, realised that I perhaps should have specified the now standard Connect Plus, but am now locked down without it. This might have been different if my Porsche Experience invite arrived before lock-down. But it didn't!

Thanks for the info, and i think Porsche has made a good decision to put these IMO essential communication kits in every 718.

Pickup of my 718 CS brought forward from next monday to this. Had arranged to go in this monday just to sort the paperwork ready for the following monday, but OPC contacted me this morning to say well since you're coming in to sign paperwork on monday, we'll arrange for you to collect the car too.

So why didn't they just arrange for me to take car this monday in the first place.
Could be they just got it a few days earlier than they'd anticipated I suppose ...

Anyways. I don't care. Just one weekend to go. The countdown has been reset twice, then has come down from months, to weeks, to just days and hours ...
