Tim,

I think you may have misread. I think the PDKs are listed as S-A (semi-automatic?)

So, rearranging, it looks like 38 base Caymans, of which 34 are manual and 4 PDK

And 45 Cayman S, of which only 7 are manual, and 38 PDK.

Certainly that seems to fit the way the OPCs have specified the demonstrators.

Of course, maybe I misread it to fit my pre-conceptions!

^ Paul's correct. "S-A" is PDK and his numbers are right.

ah ok - makes sense

So people much prefer Manual if they're buying standard, and much prefer PDK if they're buying the S.

Hmmm ...

I think it's more a reflection of what the OPCs have specced for demos - one of each gearbox, the cheaper car being given the Spanish version.

+1

I doubt its giving an accurate reflection of how buyers are actually speccing their cars goven the supply issues they' e had to date on the Cayman.

Perhaps looking at the split for 718 Boxsters will giver a truer representation of the PDK v Manual take up. I'd wager that will reflect the overall higher take up of PDK across both 2.0 and 2.5 models.

As far as I can gather the OPCs don't get to spec their demo allocation - I spoke to slightly horrified sales people at 2 different OPCs after their demo cars were delivered. Does seem that the cheaper cars got the one with the stick though.

I'm pretty sure there were around 30+ Cayman 718 showing on the used locator inc. demos. I visited the Glasgow OPC as I was nearby to check out the graphite blue (already seen it on the Boxster) but there was no sign of the car. I checked the locator again and Glasgow OPC was showing 0 Cayman. The Carrara white S they had on the locator was in the showroom but Sold. It had the full black and red interior and looked stunning. The red interior wasn't appealing to me both from the configurator and online pics but the red is a lot darker and toned down in the flesh. I also preferred the dash with the sport chrono even though I don't think I would use it (surely standard sport or normal modes are enough?). I could only see one Cayman in agate grey but it's no longer on the locator. I didn't ask if it was the only demo. If that's anything to go by, the demo and showroom cars are getting snapped up as the locator is now only showing 15.

I'm waiting on news on my job before looking into a factory order and I'm not due to change cars for a while so the delay isn't an issue for me, for now but the new vehicle tax is.

My "OPC" definitely gets to spec their own demos with the exception of launch cars when the OPC's don't have much choice/PCGB spec them. The one I deal with specs them pretty highly too as a) they can demo options like LED lights to customers and b) They don't pay VAT on demo's so if they think they can sell a car close to list price they'll load it up. The Head of Sales at the OPC specs the Cayenne Hybrid's he's been running to north of £90k....I know this because I nearly bought one (not for £90k).

It's generally only the DP's and Head of Sales that actually run Porsche demo's as personal cars though because of the tax....they can because their allowance allows them to get the Cayenne or Panamera Hybrid's and get the big tax breaks. The sales guy I deal with is currently running a 5 series as his company car and pays more tax on it than his boss who has a £90k Cayenne.

On the subject of delivery dates some of you might be getting nice surprises...I am getting a new Cayenne in March which has arrived at the OPC early. Sales man said he'd had a Cayman turn up this week he was expecting mid-Feb (completely unexpectedly).

makes complete sense to give the base spec cayman a manual. cheaper.
if i was to get a base cayman, I'd prolly keep the options as minimal as possible
except for buckets..... resale on buckets is mega

I was told there is a 12 month wait for the Cayman?

Saw this one at OPC looked absolutely gorgeous in Agate with red leather interior. Me thinks the wheels, as great as they look, will take a hammering...

Ordered my Cayman mid-October and was looking at June/July delivery. Went to see OPC to discuss yesterday morning and walked out with a Boxster order instead. Build complete 07/04/17 and will be delivered two weeks after that. Cant wait!

Must depend on which OPC you use I also ordered September and it's being built this week with delivery in a couple of weeks time

It would be interesting to know whether dealerships owned by Porsche UK direct have faster delivery.
I ordered my Cayman in August and was promised Q1 delivery, now mid April build and early May delivery. Mine was from a Dealer not owned by Porsche UK, would be interested to know (for future reference) whether I'd have got one quicker elsewhere.

I went with a franchise OPC - ordered in September, delivery (in theory) mid to late March according to my latest update which was last week. This is a regional OPC with a seemingly low allocation, I was lucky to be at the front of the list as others are waiting until later in the spring/early summer.

I was quite prepared to go further afield with family in the South East but when I spoke to two of the Porsche GB owned dealers in that region I was shocked how openly down they were on the franchise dealerships inferring the experience would be inferior as they weren't proper dealers (or words to that effect). There was no price advantage either, so maybe that also tempered any enthusiasm but I felt inclined to support the local franchise as a result - didn't feel like there was a level playing field and it's not really a great way to do business. Don't regret the decision at all, hopefully the car will come when they say it will, and the service and comms have been faultless so far.

I think if you are looking for slots the key question to ask is how many people are waiting for a slot in the next allocation at that OPC - at some places I would guess this is many times higher than some of the regional ones - if there are 10-15 people waiting, your chances are poor compared to the less busy dealers who might have a smaller allocation, but similarly have a low or empty wait list for that quarter.

I have experience of both PCGB owned and independent OPC over the last 30 years and in my experience the independent OPC give a much better experience in terms of service. Can't comment on the allocation conundrum as I have always bought my new cars from the independent and always got what I wanted when I wanted. The used car experience from the PCGB owned dealer left a lot to be desired.
