Almost in a position to purchase a Cayman R... Options?
Discussion
Hi all,
Bit of background: I really want a 997.2 GT3, but as they keep going up/not coming down to sensible levels, it’s out until I win the lottery.
I did think about a 997.2 S, but any will depreciate as they age and mileage goes up. The GTS seems to be better at holding value but as it’s also gone above (my budget) what I feel are VFM prices, that’s also out.
So, 987.2 S it is, but is it special enough? Probably yes, but man maths puts me in Cayman R territory, which does feel special, and is holding value better than most (it would appear anyway).
Given that I’m a manual man (yes, I’ve driven PDK and appreciate how ‘brilliant’ it is on track), a quick look at autotrader offers these:
Have to upload a pic of the table as PH formatting is ste:
Love the blue one, but lack of buckets puts me off.
Like the first grey one, but mileage/non Porsche history puts me off.
I know it was a no cost option but how the fudge does a 50k sports car not come with Nav!?
My ‘must haves’ are: Buckets, Nav, FPSH, Spyders, Air con. PCCBs and PSE would be nice... I’d also like to avoid anything with a rear wiper, though I know I could delete that.
Which would you pick and why?

Have you used nav in a 2010 car ! it's shocking poor and dates the car to high heaven imo and will only look more dated and st as time goes on.
Diver focused options win every time over a dated nav system !
PCCB are mega rare, only ever seen 2 or 3 cars with them, one was a press car with no AC also.
good luck with the hunt, I would offer you mine but it has no NAV ;-) I choose my 2nd R on KEY driver options and hence did not mind a car without a 8 year old dated NAV system.
if you want an R to drive and goodness knows if you are willing to pay >£40k for an R then that's what you are buying one for I see key driver options as.
Manual
Buckets
Spyder wheels
PSE
Sports Crono
Short Shift
and AC while is not a driver option, cars without don't sell !!!
what else do you need ?
well I could say:
cup holders, they seem rarer on a R but bloody usefull on a euro trip when doing a drive though for a coffee and don't want to stop !
Bose sounds good once adjusted for less base over basic system which is very poor.
rear sensors are handy as you cannot see much out the back and you sit quite low.
blue tooth for taking a emergency call, or again on a hoon with mates to keep in touch.
now the luxuries
NAV well it's st, so useless imo I use my IPhone on google maps it works 20x better and shows jams !
xenons sweet option, rare !!!
PCCB again very rare, disks are £4k each though so it puts people off specing them and it scares 90% buyers, worth it though to get the 6 pot upgraded braking system mind, you can always fit steels to it.
Leather, nice to have, I don't miss it as much as I thought this time round again I bought mine to drive and quite shocked how I never give leather a 2nd thought.
I think that's about it all covered :-)

Are you aware of this one (I'm assuming it is actually still for sale)?

Thanks for the replies all, didn't expect so many just yet - thought you'd all be at work (as I am...)
MrD, I'd rather not pay over £40k for one, but that's the market and I wasn't in a position to look when they were mid £30s. I get that you hate PCM, but, as I do European trips at least once a year, having to stick a £200 Garmin to the windscreen of a Porsche is taking the piss...
Aren't Sport Chrono, cup holders & Xenons standard equipment?
Seems I also forgot to put Extended Leather on my 'must have' list...
PSE & Short Shifter are retrofittable (yes, that is a word!), so not the end of the world if it doesn't come with. Bose doesn't interest me much as I hardly ever listen to music in the car unless on a Euro trip and if the standard system on my M3 is good enough, the Porsche one can't be any worse.
The HR Owen car was at first glance almost perfect, but it doesn't have nav (see above reason). Gone
I have since seen the JZM car, and updated my little spreadsheet - seems a little pricey comparatively.
There's a perfect R (for someone else) at Portsmouth OPC, but it's PDK, and has a red interior

All options, Xenons are quite rare.Sport Chrono can be retrofitted, but without the dash-top wart.
PSE can be retrofitted, but apparently an OPC won't do a full R PSE install, just the S version (for a bit over £2K). However they will supply the parts for the R system.
Hi Jim - I've just bought a CR, collected it last weekend. I looked at all of those on the market along with a couple of others you have not included.
My spec is PDK, buckets, spyders, PSE, climate and then a few other things which I'm not bothered about.
I don't think you will find your perfect spec out there if you are wanting things like xenons, full leather etc in addition to low mileage, history, owners etc.
For what it's worth I have PCM3 and I wish I didn't .
Not wanting to start a manual/PDK debate but I deliberately chose PDK and I think it is absolutely brilliant. However I'm sure I'd think manual was also brilliant!
The one option I really like is PSE and my advice would be to not compromise on this option - it sounds great and really makes the car!
Good luck with your search!

This is the spec Id be looking for - basically my old car (If you can track it down) apart from the last 2 options.

Last chat I had with OPC about the PSE, the part numbers for the Retro Fit Kit are the same Part numbers to replace PSE on an R, as far as they are concerned there is only one PSE for a Cayman regardless of it being an S or and R, they never made the write up of Retro Fit R kit as they didn't have enough R's to do itSport Chrono can be retrofitted, but without the dash-top wart.

But yes it is 2k to fit
The R exhaust is larger dia, so a retro fit pse from Porsche will only get you the basic one and loose you bhp !
I would think hard about PCM as it really is quite a st unit, does not do full postcode either, but you can pay Porsche to upgrade the software, I did on my last one, but don't use nav on any trips it will take you the longest route some times 40miles in the wrong direction to get you to a motor way, if you choose no motorway it will take you down tracks.
And hence why on my new R PCM was way way down my list of kit to have, google maps works far better.
It's a useless system and putting a phone on your windows once a year for a Euro trip will pay you back 10 fold if you use nav. No one uses a garmin these days ! Plus it means safer phone use if the car has Bluetooth as you can see it.
Try a taxi abroad all these posh taxi are merc with nav all taxi drivers use a phone on the window, it's clearly the best system.
I tend to plan my routes befor hand and still take a big AA map, nav users are sorry to say sheep stuck in jams on motorways !
Options and miles are key, the jzm car is the best car IMO but the most expensive that's how it is :-) just buy it :-)

I'd pick the HR Owen one personally. Looks keenly priced when compared with the rest - good colour, PCCB's are a bonus, lowish miles and most importantly no rear wiper
+1Looks like best value, ceramics are nice and I like green. PCM on 987 is terrible, your Garmin will be much better.
