Apologies if this has been covered a million times before..!

I bought my Boxster S new just over 4 years ago and it's just approaching 10,000 miles (!). I've got a fairly big road trip planned for this summer so want to get some new tyres on it in advance. It's currently on Pirelli P Zeros N0 (265/35/R20 and 235/35/R20).

I have to get Porsche approved as I still have the car under warranty and intend to keep it that way. Can I move on to N1 rated tyres? I've been fairly happy with the Pirelli's but just wondered if anyone else could recommend something different? What about Super Sports?

Cheers, Jon

If you mean Michelin Pilot Super Sport, then they are being replaced by the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. I don't think either is N rated.

If Pirelli are making an N1 version, then you could fit those. I've only had 911s and I tend to stick to Michelin.

You will be pleased to hear that "official" Porsche rated tyres are available from BlackCircles, which is likely to save you the thick end of £400 on a full set. smile

If you are changing all 4 then you can change to,PZERO N1, if just changing the rear you should stick to N0.

I think Michelin are launching n rated PS4 or PSS but could be a few months so might not fit your timeframe.

Basically you have the Pirelli, Goodyear Eagle F1 (seem well liked), Bridgestone Potenza.

Thanks, will be all four. So, Porsche are happy as long as it is P0 or P1? You don't have to stick with the type of tyre that came with the car for the warranty?

N0 or N1 :-)

you can fit tyres tested for a 911 to your Boxster as long as they have a N mark, that's how daft it all is.

Haha, thanks :-)

Ok, thanks all, I'll have a look around. Now the next question is do I trust some muppet from the cheapest "on your driveway" place to change my tyres without a) damaging the wheel or b) damaging my ceramic brakes...

My OPC quoted £275 each rear fitted for N0 PZERO last week. Using an online place you can get the tyres for £200-£210 and then get somewhere local to fit them for 10-20 a corner. So saving approx £50 a corner. Maybe ring an on the drive place and ask them outright if they are used to ceramic brakes and £1500 a corner alloys.

1. Get a quote from black circles or similar for the tyre of choice. P zero or Eagle F1 including fitting.

2. Get a quote from your OPC for the same.

3. Ask if the service manager if they will price match the lowest black circles price within 50miles or if not what they are willing to do the job for and then decide if that's worth your peace of mind.

I have used the cheapest local place to fit two sets of tyres (£7.50+VAt per corner) and been completely happy. That said I don't have ceramics and it certainly is worth asking the question before commiting. Re N0PZero having had both N0 and N1 PZero I would definitely go N1 - even though you will almost certainly have to pay more.

If you have a Costco local to you they usually have some sort of tyre deal on, I've noticed they stock Goodyear and Michelins now.

Plus they tyre fitters are first class and are very careful with your car and its wheels.

I have a 2016 boxster S PDK , and am considering buying the 2 year extended warranty now , for years 4 and 5

please could you inform me on the following points :

1) would fitting a non N0/N1 tyre invalidate the warranty?
2) would fitting a non Porsche battery invalidate the warranty ?
3) would getting a Porsche specialist (ie a non opc )to do any ''wear and tear'' work on the car invalidate the warranty ?

thank you

When in this position I did look to see if there was an independent warranty that might be cheaper - I didn't do an exhaustive search but the one I found was actually significantly more expensive that the Porsche. It might still work out cheaper because you weren't required to use an OPC for servicing, but you would probably have to be a high mileage motorist for that to be the case.

you mean NO !

Fitting non N spec does not affect the warranty unless Porsche can prove the non N spec tyre caused the fault, this of course would never happen.

What fitting a non OPC part does is NOT allow you to renew a warranty with them because they can choose the tick list needed for a warranty.

So the answer to the question above is NO imo not yes.
Fitting non N spec does not "invalidate the warranty" as the question is asked, but it does stop you renewing a Porsche warranty.

Thanks for the input everyone. I emailed black circles about my concerns re. the alloys and ceramics. Got a fairly generic response:-

"Our approved garages are independently inspected by Blackcircles.com to ensure the prevention of damage to vehicle and a work job sheet is filled out by the garage and customer pre and post fiting to ensure there is no damage to the vehicle.

If for any reason damage was to occur this would be noted on the fitting job sheet and Blackcircles.com would ensure this issue was fixed and resolved"

I can just imagine conversations about a chipped ceramic disc 'being fine and not a safety concern', etc, etc.

Think I'll see if the OPC can match (or get near) the blackcircles price first....!

In your dreams.

For what it's worth I paid Blackcircles £151.01 for a N0 Goodyear Eagle F1 fully and perfectly fitted. The OPC had quoted £250 for the same tyre

The current list of Porsche approved tyres is available for download...

http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/po...

Porsche Centres will always be uncompetitive for tyres and batteries because they have to buy from the Porsche GB approved source so too many parties wanting a share of margin. Centres will normally fit tyres they supply for free and my Centre charges just £40 for fitting 4 tyres I supply including valves, wheel weights etc.

IMO the Eagle F1s on my Cayman GTS are noisier than the P Zero N0s I had on my S. Other PHers have said the F1 is a better tyre performance-wise and that the P Zero N1 is superior to the N0.

Me, I'd rather trade some performance for refinement and am looking to return to P Zeros when the time comes.
