Sounds like a rubbish OPC if that's their attitude to new Porsches.

The less people buy the new 718 because of sneery comments is fine by me.I love driving around in something that isn't coming the other way every 5 minutes and the retro beetle noise just adds to the ownership magic .
I respect the views of previous 6 cylinder owners but please don't look down on us mere 4 cylinder boys as pretend Porsche owners . The DNA is still there in the build quality , performance ,looks and handling . If you dismiss one because of some turbo lag and a growly exhaust note then I think , overall , you are missing out on a great sports car. Thankyou and I hope you enjoy your 240 is, TTSs and secondhand 981s !

Rather condescending?

I don't like turbo lag one bit.

I doubt it because the salesman could tell that Ktcarnut is a purist and enthusiast that knows his onions so there's no point in bs. If you've spent £000s on Porsches in the past you must know what you're talking about.

My local OPC invited me to try the new Boxster 718S, not much to say really except ................

IT'S BLOOMING FANTASTIC

Acceleration, tick; looks, tick; sound, even more ticks. Knocks my 987S into the proverbial cocked hat. I want one, but may have to settle for a 981S with the PDK box as can't afford a new one.

200 mile round trip through Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire on fabulous roads in my 718 CS over this weekend. The sound is indeed glorious.

Saw no less than three 718 Boxsters out and about with the roof down out enjoying the sunshine. They are lovely looking motors. Which reminded me, I snapped a few pics of a Guards Red one at my OPC when I collected my CS - a brilliant example. With Sport Design package no less.

Interior might be a little OTT though.

I agree on the painted interior....thought about that for the wife's Boxster that we've just ordered but think it's a bit OTT. Nice looking car apart from that though! I do like those wheels but we've gone for all black wheels as Mrs Cheib's car is going to be Ruby Star (the new name for Ruby Stone a la 964 RS) so don't want anything competing with the colour!

Seriously, are people really telling me that they think of this: https://youtu.be/zR7fovIEbKc when they hear a 718?

I know I'm not as young as I used to be, but surely my ears are not that bad, yet! smile

I agree with the red interior on the above car. Shallow as it may seem (because I know we all buy cars purely for the driving experience and to be going 10 tenths everywhere...) that would probably put me off buying that particular car. (That being said, I didn't entertain a GTS with the silver/brushed interior trim either - made sure I got one with the carbon trim)

I played that video and then one of a 718S in office and asked if they sounded the same. That resulted in laughter and a resounding no.

Indeed.

There are slight sound textures of an air-cooled Beetle in there, but the 718 S (am not so familiar with the base...) is much more gruff and bass. Slightly closer to the pitch of a Scooby than a Beetle if I had to compare, but not quite like either in intensity or timbre.

On overrun, the bark is nothing at all like either a Scooby or a Beetle.

It is certainly unique, there's no doubting that. And I for one like it more and more the more I hear it, as my CS engine gets properly embedded and loosens up.

I'm not sure why people are making this comparison (even the owner above does it) and I can only assume those people really have not spent much time around VW engines, but perhaps it's a legacy of the 911 connection thing and people are trying to be funny?

If anything at all, my take on the 718 sound is that it doesn't really seem any more 'special' than any turbo'd 4. So there are hints of Subaru, Focus RS, Audi S3, etc....it's a turbo'd 4. Simple as that. That's not to say it doesn't sound special - just not MORE special than similar layouts. It's certainly not a unique sound, that's for sure.

Put it this way - I was around a huge range of cars at an impromptu meet yesterday from Ford RS to 570S, 458, 456, Mazzer GT, etc. The RS gave his engine a rev and it sounded...like a hot hatch being revved. I'm sure I saw a few sneers from other owners/observers (not very fair, but each to their own!). By contrast, I very sedately did a 3-point-turn and pulled away and was met by smiles and thumbs up from other (much more special) car owners. The CGTS really does have that little bit of magic in it's sound.

And that's the thing for me - the 718 sounds like a hot hatch. A good one, but a hot hatch none the less. Would it put me off?? I'm not sure. I really, really don't know. I know my CGTS is hard to not love for it's character, but my life long trend of always aiming up means that I'd like to hope I will be in a 911 next. ha ha

Yes, it would put me off too.

I went with standard silver/brushed, but am noticing that greasy fingerprints really show up on this surface, particularly if you use the cupholders where you have to press the silver/brushed trim to release them.

A carbon trim may be the better choice here.

Erm - potentially not. Obviously I don't have both for comparison, but the carbon has a sheen to it, so could show fingerprints as well. Can't say I've noticed actually, as other than when a passenger starts messing about I never actually finger any of my trim or the cup holders cover! Ha ha.

Don't use the cup holders wink

I never use them and they never will be used... by anyone. Need a drink, not in my car....
