981 climate control
Discussion
I'm currently in a 981 Cayman S and am thinking of moving up to a GTS. In my hunt I've noticed surprisingly rare is the automatic climate control. Am I the only one who thinks that should be a given these days that the car can control the temperature and fan speed on its own? I feel like I can't bring myself to get the next model up and lose such a basic thing. How come more cars weren't specced with it from new?
So for those who don't have it, is it particularly annoying to live without, or in practice do you rarely actually touch it? I guess that as most of these cars don't have it, it's not a big resale value concern either?

I've had both.
Obviously the climate is better, but the standard aircon system is surprisingly easy to use and also very good. I found both needed periodic adjustment.
Having used both, I would probably spec climate if buying new (although pricey IIRC), but used, it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

I must admit that personally I find climate control a bit hit and miss.
I have a basic 2.7 Cayman (981) without climate control and I tend to just have the aircon switched on and the fan speed set very low.
We have a Honda as our everyday car with climate control and although on a warm day, 22 degrees feels right, when the outside temp is say 18 - 20 degrees and I still want a bit of cool air, the climate control often pumps in warm air and directs onto my feet.
I've had this is a few cars and if I'm honest, I just prefer the simplistic approach of a basic aircon system where I can get cool air and then direct where I want.
I appreciate that you can turn climate control into basis aircon if required, but that just makes me think that personally I wouldn't be put off buying a car just because it didn't have full climate control.
Judging by the extensive lists of optional extras that some people have previously said that had put on their cars at time of purchase, I suspect others may view this differently!!

Hi,
Again we have a very basic 2.7, when specing it I asked about climate control as opposed to A/C. All previous cars in family have C/C. Was told not to bother as it added little functionality above simple A/C.
After 3 years it's not missed, the C/C in my TT requires tweaking for comfort over trips - we find the level of tweaking with the 981 A/C is about the same. As mentioned above it tends to get left on with the fan at a low level most of the time.
Of more concern would be fixing the rather flaky fan which packs up on a regular basis - on third unit now!

Hi Steven
Nice to see you are on the hunt!
I had climate in my GTS but not in the GT4 and have not missed it at all. The standard air con does a good job in the GT4 and I usually have it just on the one setting. Though it does annoyingly still come on every time you start it up. But the auto did that too!

I didn't have it on my 981 Cayman S and I do have it on my GT4.
My S was parked on the street and used as a daily. I found it a PITA in winter to defrost/demist by having to max out the fan and temp for defrosting/demisting then gradually turn them down as the engine warmed up and I started to cook and wanted less fan noise.

As always you will find those that dont have it dont want it and those that have it could not do without it, go figure lol
Personally it was a deal breaker for me. I've had loaners without and its just stupid IMHO not to have Full CC.
You are correct in that there are plenty of otherwise high spec Porsches out there without dual climate. I am convinced that the naming Porsche give it on the configurator plays a large part in this ie "dual climate" is assumed to mean the only added feature is to be able to set separate controls for passenger and driver whereis it actually means none climate to climate. Many buys just assume climate control is standard and (especially with the 2 seaters) think I'm not bothered about being able to set a separate temp for the passenger in such a small cabin. If Porsche called it "Full Climate Control" with a note to say "upgrade from manual air con as standard" I think it would be specced a lot more.
I've just had a fully loaded 718 which had 1 ommission, dual air con, even the OPC's get it wrong lol.
To me it does affect resale, not perhaps to Joe Public not used to Porsche (until its too late and then its "normal aircon is fine I don't need it" when really they mean "####! I never knew that when I bought the car". I've seen plenty of advertised cars asked about on car forums and the first comment is usually "no dual climate".

So you would pick duel over a manual gear box, PCCB's or suspension set up on a used Porsche?
Pistonheads........ Ambient temp Matters.....
Actually, I'd choose dual climate over manual (too heavy clutch and mine's a DD), PCCB's (the only discs that have failed at the PEC) but not over PASM. Pistonheads........ Ambient temp Matters.....
PASM rules. PDK rules. Steel rules (sic).
Quite a lot of replies, thanks all!
Given a fairly even split between people who think it's important and those who don't I'm no more able to convince myself that it's not a deal breaker. However given that there aren't a huge amount for sale at the moment (11 PDK, of which only four have climate control) it could be an issue (combined with my need for it to be blue).
I'll keep an eye on them and see how they change. More than happy with my 'S' in the mean time!
Also I'd definitely agree with the bundling it with the dual zone might have confused or scared people off. I really don't see the need for the dual zone climate control and think that could have been an option of its own, with regular climate control the norm.

I've got CC on two Porsches, AC on one, and neither on the classics - just open the pax window
The main advantage with CC is the specific numerical temp settings that you simply scroll up and down. However, AC works fine and you soon become accustomed to your preferred settings. As said above, both require fine tuning.
It's heated seats I'd miss - prefer a cool cabin and warm seats.
