Hi all, run an mx5 turbo with around 220bhp which i have used for trackdays but it's a bit raw and think i might be growing out of it. Plus i don't do anywhere near the number of trackdays i used to. So would like something I can use for most of the year and also take the other half out without rattling her about or deafening her and am thinking boxster (don't want to spend more than about 6k and fed up of mazda's rusting) - either the 2.7 or 3.2 (for the improved brakes). I have a 996 I know all about the reputation of the engine/ IMS etc so not worried there.

What I don't know is if the oil surge issues under cornering are a concern for trackdays and if the deep sump is enough?

Also does the folding roof fit over a safety devices rear cage?

Anything else I should keep in mind?

I'd be changing the seats for buckets, upgrading pads / fluid and probably installing some adjustable suspension

Cheers

Fit the 996 X51 (or better, with alloy rather than rubber doors) sump baffle kit and that'll help the oil surge issue. If you go with the deeper sump you gain 1/2l of oil or something too. Motorsport AOS also.

You'll want to brace the two halves of the rear suspension 'subframe' from side to side if using the car hard as the whole thing tends to flex a bit.

Hartech are the people to talk to as they race a Box - of course there's a point of diminishing returns for a 'trackday' rather than race car, but I'm sure there's plenty of tips they could suggest for a relatively low outlay. They're cracking neutrally handling cars, so would be a lot of fun.

Thanks - mods will be mild as still want something with reasonable road manners.

I'd actually probably go completely stock for the first one so i could decide what I want doing but the bracing sounds good - is something available off the shelf?

It's basically one of these

On boxa.net one of the guys made his own version. Got one you can see on my car some time.

Cheers ed - I have found a local engineering place that I'm sure could knock me up something, looks pretty simple

I used my 986S as a track car for a year while I was fixing my 944 track car. (well while I was leaving it sat in the garage & eventually fixing it)

I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was on standard (new) m030 sport suspension - the whole kit - dampers, springs and ARB's was just over £500 from Porsche.

A bucket seat is a must - you can get a reasonable priced fitting kit from design 911. It works on the road as well.

I ran it on my 944 track wheels - 225/45/17 AD08's and it handled very nicely. Was good on tracks as different as Spa, Donington, Cadwell & Curborough.

Not sure a rear cage (can you buy a rear cage?) gives you much more protection than the roll hoops?

I didn't fit an X.51 sump but would be tempted to for a long term track car.

Cheers - I sold my 944 S2 last year, think I'd rather the prospect of taking a street boxster on track than the stock 944 - it was a bit too 'comfy'...!

The safety devices description seems to imply you can fit it either as a full or half cage. I'd want to see that the cage was higher than the hoops for protection in the first place - I do prefer the looks of the full bar than the hoops but imagine the rearward stays would give better strength too - but the full cage would probably be too much for the road.

The roll cage bar would also be used for harnesses mounting - did you have your bucket seat just with the standard seat belt? I'd like to have both as I do on my mx5 at the moment.

And did you run a 'square' set up on tyres then rather than wider rears?

My 944S2 isn't very "street" smile still usable for Euro trackdays though. Yes it was a square setup as they came straight off the 944.

The rear hoops aren't that tall, you're right, and it's certainly a concern for headroom depending how tall you are. My seats were on runners, I'm 5'10" and it was just about OK.

I just used the 3 point belt, the D911 kit had a mounting point for the buckle

Oh and the 986S brakes are excellent - fit 997GT3 deflectors (only a few quid) for improved cooling.

Thanks
I'll of course see how I get on with the buckets - will probably have to be on sliders rather than bolted straight to the floor but hopefully can still take an inch or two height out (I'm 6 ft).
Brakes was the main reason for wanting the S - the more powerful engine would be a bonus smile

Would have loved to have kept the 944 but it sat right inbetween the 996 and mx5, and did neither job quite as well. Plus i didn't really have the space for it frown itch scratched tho, wanted one for ages!! Heard they do take very well to the track when modded 😀

Does the C4 have same brakes as C2? If so same again for 986S.

Yep c4 is the same. I hear boxster s brakes go on the 2.7 fine on the front - but it's more complicated on the rear? Everything is so easy I the mx5, everything fits everything else just bolt on!!

As mentioned already about X51 sump. Not sure if Porsche still sell X51 (or its cost) but I've fitted a FVD sump to my 996 C2, basically it's a X51 copy.

Buy directly from FVD (German site) as it can be cheaper than UK re-seller.

I believe this is the X51 part: http://www.design911.co.uk/parts/99610724341/

Local OPC could probably source at a competitive price.
