The 718 GT4 might be arriving sooner than you think!
Discussion
I do see where you’re coming from in terms of design departments, but there’s not many physical similarities, the MA170 was based on the MA1 only in the crankcase half and crank department, but even those have been changed to suit the GT3.
The halves were changed to modify the oil spray to the pistons and oil supply for the crank bearings were changed. And obviously the dry sump system changes the underside of the halves dramatically. Dry sump system is obviously a major difference and changes the landscape of the bottom side of the engine completely and houses the oil wiper system too.
New crankshaft, titanium rods and pistons. New solid crank pulley. New aluminium camshaft controllers and different controller actuators.
Cylinder heads completely redesigned by the motorsport department, larger valves, larger inlet and exhaust ports, unique valve fingers and valve control (rather than hydraulic tappets).
Inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, catalytic converters (400 cell), exhaust system obviously completely redesigned. New airbox and secondary air system too.
All fuel lines, fuel injectors, fuel rails and high pressure pumps have been changed. It uses two radial pumps rather than one axial pump on the MA1. It runs at 200bar compared to the MA1’s 120bar.
Spark plugs were changed but the ignition coils did stay the same.

If the detuned version is closer in feel to he GT3's unit then fan bloody tastic in my view...
Not a chance IMHO. It'll feel like a 4.0 version of the 3.8, which is essentially what it'll be...Peak torque is a petty static figure for any normally aspirated modern petrol engine for a given engine capacity, and can easily by calculated by using applying 85 ft lb / litre as a guideline. The difference in why one 4.0 petrol normally aspirated engine may make more HP than another is the ability to carry that torque figure higher up the rev range – Horse Power = (RPM x torque)/5252
So you see its Impossible for the 718 GT4 to be ‘screamer’ with a detuned 4.0 GT3 engine, unless Porsche decide to unleash 500hp in the GT4 (never going to happy folks).
There will be a GT4RS.
The new GT4 will slot in nicely with price and performance over the 718 GTS and below the 911(s). Whilst the GT4RS will be given the go ahead to rise up and give the GT3 a run for it's money.
Limited numbers with a price to match and the flippers will have a field day.

A Rennlist poster, who has close links to Porsche HQ, stated today that a decision on a GT4RS has not been made. He did say that an RS mule has been doing the rounds for a year though. The same poster claims:
- Detuned GT3 4.0L engine. Final HP figures have yet to be set, 425-450hp is possible, all depends on where they set the redline.
- Will also have the GT3's 6 speed manual.
- Coupe and Spyder versions.

Again nothing that we haven't heard before.. - Detuned GT3 4.0L engine. Final HP figures have yet to be set, 425-450hp is possible, all depends on where they set the redline.

As per the q's on RL... does GT3 6 Speed mean GT3 ratios?
As it happens, I was at Reading today getting Centre caps sorted on my GT4...spoke to someone there who said its definitely coming/ announcement will be later this year and just like everyone else, they are ust waiting to hear final configuration and pricing.

Is that for the RS versions or the regular GT versions?- Detuned GT3 4.0L engine. Final HP figures have yet to be set, 425-450hp is possible, all depends on where they set the redline.
- Will also have the GT3's 6 speed manual.

If they can give me a front end on the Spyder that matches the GT3 looks (like the 981), I may have to beg, blow and proposition my OPC for a placeom the Spyder list.

This coincides with my masseuse telling me a while back about a car with more carbon and expensive materials doing the rounds.- Detuned GT3 4.0L engine. Final HP figures have yet to be set, 425-450hp is possible, all depends on where they set the redline.

Here are some 981 Spyders for comparison - quite a difference to my ears. The 718 Spyder sounds like it has a bassier and lower pitched exhaust note.
