my simple understanding is that the 4lt is a new engine. New enough.
The new 4lt engine is what I believe will be in the car. The only "detuning" I see are swapping with cheaper parts. I don't see them doing "work" to the parts of the engine themselves due to costs. Would defeat purpose of swapping for cheaper parts.
The Spyder exaggeration by press mentioned, is that Porsche will not see this as a GT3 engine because technically, it's not.
But I think they come from the same place.

This is what I've been told by the masseuse. I have asked the question again so waiting for a reply. She was 'Adam Ant' that is was a 4 litre so I have absolutely no reason to believe it won't be.
A full on GT3 motor it wont be... Its bound to be called a GT4 and I really can't see it being an RS

Don't think it's ever been said that we are getting another Cayman GT4 has it ?
Porsche said that Gt cars will remain N.A. apart from GT2 lol and as far as we all know they might just do a new improved GT4 race car and not a road car as they need to up the game in the GT4 race series
We could quite easy see no new Cayman GT road car and they could just do a new Cayman R as they have done before as it takes all the pressure away that GT cars brings, as I think Porsche have a bit of a problem with the 718 being 4 pot but then putting a 6 in the top of the range model's? As it says yes the 718 4 pot is crap and don't bother with it as you need a 6 pot to have a real engine.
Not good marketing really is it.
But we can all say this and that and until Porsche say anything about it it's just talk as no one has a clue and that's the only thing that is 100% true right now

So you think the GT4 mule photos are from people with exceptional photoshop skills? Hmm ... could be onto something ... GT3 engine minus all the special bits would basically be the old 3.8 bored to 4.0 wouldn't it? That would substantiate both the "detuned GT3" and the "4.0 version of the old 3.8" claims. No resurrection of an old engine and no turbos.
I'm thinking this is the most likely powerplant at this point, combined with a manual only 'box to keep the performance in check.
I agree ... maybe with more of a tune otherwise it will "only" be 400 bhp with 325 ft lbs ??I'm thinking this is the most likely powerplant at this point, combined with a manual only 'box to keep the performance in check.
There will be a little off standard 3.8's running around with much more than this ...
Most of the thing's AP said was incorrect when it came to it lol
Only time will tell but guess they need to be quick if they are doing one as new regs ECT are making the NA engine a thing of the past
Plus guess the 4 pot running 450 bhp must be fun on the road and would like to try one

Ok info from the masseuse again that its a 4 litre, not the GT3 unit entirely but a reworked version of the old 3.8 with revised internals.
Quite a lot of it is new apparently.
So that's what they are doing with all those thousands of engines returned from the 991.1 gt3 instead of scrapping let's put them in the new gt4 and nobble the Rev limit to 8k!Quite a lot of it is new apparently.

Cheers Fokker, your source seems to know more than most OPC staff do. I'm guessing it's someone high up. It ties in with what I've been expecting. No way it would get the GT3 engine and no way it would be an F4T.Quite a lot of it is new apparently.
I hope it's a better engine that the 981 in that it's more revvy and feels more exciting.

Isn't the current 4.0 gt3 engine at heart basically also 'a reworked version of the old 3.8 with revised internals'....? Unless you meant old 3.8 basic carrera engine rather than 991.1 gt3 3.8.Quite a lot of it is new apparently.

At a guess the new GT4 will be 400-410bhp. If the 4.0 rumour is correct, it will basically the same bhp/litre as the 981 GT4 (approx.102hp/litre) with a broadly similar redline I imagine. Hardly an earth shattering up upgrade, and definitely won’t be a 8k+ screamer. Twinfan said:

718 Spyder could be where the smart money goes.
Agreed - if you like rag tops, and cruising rather than racing, it should be a great road car.For real world road driving it is as rapid and engaging as the GT4 too.
