Top Gear : “A new exhaust that claims to offer a more “distinctive, emotional sound”. In practice it makes an already unpleasant noise more unpleasant by making it louder, cracklier and more bassy. TG Law says wherever an adaptive exhaust fitted, you must always drive with it in its loudest, most antisocial mode. The 718 is an exception”.

“And before the Cayman and Boxster had two cylinders cruelly but necessarily liberated from their engines, transmogrifying them into 718s, it was the Cayman or Boxster GTS that we recommended. And, as a matter of fact, continue to over any brand new 718, if you can find a nice second-hand one with six cylinders”

TG and Evo have always been the most critical of the sound of the 718 - utterly charmless is what Evo say in the mag. That said other reports regard the GTS sound at best "disappointing". Doesn't seem that Porsche have taken the criticisms seriously.

Alpine have already demonstrated that a 4 cylinder turbo can sound really good (to me at least). I hope the press reports on the Alpine out next week will seriously put the cat amongst the pigeons.

It’s a great shame as the 718 is a fantastic car, improved in every other way over the 981 and even with that engine still the greatest all round sports car at anything like the money.

I have it on good authority the 991/2 GTS has a greatly improved engine and exhaust note over the 991.2 S - so it can be done with turbo engines. I guess that with the flat four, to quote the old saying, you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

This is one of the best online reviews in terms of the depth of the review.
Regarding the sound of the engine I’m guessing it’s a work in progress. I doubt Porsche don’t know or don’t care about the thoughts on the subject, i can only presume like BMW, they are struggling to get a good tune from the engine

Oh yes, he brings his person ethics into it... you’d think the last thing he’d be reviewing is sports cars. More likely hybrids, EVs etc but no...
His reviews are in-depth and more real world rather than technical

His "reviews" are good to watch while you're playing with the configurator but the repeated drivel about leather interiors grates on my nerves. If he's so against leather etc. I would suggest that reviewing luxury cars is the wrong vocation. He does cover the specs of cars pretty comprehensively but as with any of the other car youtubers, I would take their opinion with a pinch of salt as they're no experts and their opinion isn't as valid as you're own, which ultimately is the one that really counts.

Seems a shame that no-one other than the Autogefuhl guy has done a video about these cars...

I guess maybe someone who hasn't ordered one isn't as excited about it as I am!

The amount of videos reflects the demand for the model.

Maybe. Next time I launch £50k at my daily drive I'll definitely be checking them out, but the 718 Cayman has turned out to be really quite good. And I never got near a GTS yet.

Porsche need it! To introduce such an inappropriate engine into what is otherwise brilliant sports car reeks of arrogance and complacency. They could have and should have done much better.

Well done Renault. Find it somewhat ironic that the turbo lag is deemed acceptable and the rush of torque praised, whereas these are both presented as negatives for the 718. That said, I’d rather have the 718. If the Alpine was available when I ordered mine it wouldn’t have turned my head.

Another uncomplimentary review of the engine note in this week’s Autocar brief review :-

“.....so what’s the problem? In all honesty it’s hard to detect much difference from the standard Cayman S, but the more pressing issue is the noise. Yes, still. Whatever has changed for the GTS sports exhaust has made the boxer drone more prominent, more audible and more annoying. The sports exhaust is pointless here, because all you do is ensure it’s turned off”

Frustratingly they love everything else : “Despite the noise the Cayman GTS has to come recommended, because it’s still perhaps the best-handling sports car this side of £100,000”

“....... in fact it’s difficult to think of a single thing you’d want to add to the GTS package - bar some Porsche-branded earplugs, perhaps”

Hi Dreamcar

Still got the GTS I assume?
I sold mine - Jeez, a big mistake! The old adage "you don't know what you've got until it gone" is so true. You are absolutely right, right re: GTS, so right I've said it twice. CGTS stands out as the best car I've ever owned - period! Sound. looks, noise, balance - everything!
Keep it: it'll be an iconic car in years to come.
Take care.

Given that, by pretty much common consent, a subaru and alpine sound much better, clearly that isn't a universal view.

You didn't rate the 981 either. Plus ca change.

Nobody bought the Subaru with its supposedly better sounding engine and nobody bought the Alfa 4C either. No sign of a boom in Lotus V6 sales despite this outbreak of 4-pox!

718 is a brilliant car for £50k and I will be staggered if many customers decide to swerve away.
