However you cut it, the 718s seem to be selling really well. Up(down?)grading to F4T is a tough call if you're used to an F6 though, I think that's why many feel so strongly about it.

Anywhere to get sales numbers etc? I like stats nerdread Would be cool to know exactly the number of 718 sold thus far and also total number of 981 C/B's produced etc.

Only worldwide numbers have been published, and just total Boxster/Cayman I think.

Blimey, is this thread still running?

Surely, most posts are supporting/defending individual owner choices - we all do it.

Like them or loathe them, for anyone seeking an independent opinion, the motoring press all seem to have a similar consensus, and they are supposed to be impartial.

Latest Evo review of the Cayman 718 GTS:

There is no shadow of a doubt that it is quicker than the old flat-six GTS. If only it had the soundtrack that prickled the hairs on the back of your neck and matched the majesty of the mountains.....
The old (981) Cayman GTS was arguably all the car you ever needed - hard, if not impossible, to fault, especially at the price. The new GTS is still brilliant, but despite the standard sports exhaust, the lacklustre soundtrack means it's now not quite the one-car quiver it used to be.
Quite. It's the same old people saying the same old stuff over and over again and grinding the same old axes. Fellas, don't you tire of saying it over and over again? We know by now what you think.

I click on the thread to see if I can get some new enlightenment. I'll learn one day... sleep

Someone posted them a few pages back (58 I think) but they are also on the Porsche site.

Nice one, interesting figures.

Would have thought Boxster/Cayman would have the highest numbers simply because its the cheapest in the range.

Question to both 718 & 981 owners:

1. Why can't you like the sound of both? I like classical music and electronic music. Why fight over something so remedial?

F6 sounds great, F4T has a different tone but still sounds great! Both sound much better than my Tesla wobble
That’s really easy to answer, the 718 noise is actually horrible to my ears. I’ve said before the 981 was always going to be a hard act to follow as it is quite simply one of the best sounding cars you can buy. The problem is the 718 is so bad the gulf is more extreme than it should have been. If it was close / marginal I could understand but the 718 does not just sound different it sounds horrible. That is more obvious to those used to the sound of the 981 for sure and then buy those used to the sound of a good N/A engine and least obvious to those used to the sound of diesel turbos. Harsh I know but so true unfortunately. I’ve been driving mine this week given the weather, the sound is simply epic and that is nothing to do with driving as intended as I’ve not had chance to really open it up, thats simply pooling around and “playing” with it, so much fun.

In fact I’ve been swapping between the 993 and 981 (first time the 993 has been on the road for 18 months) and I simply cannot see how a 718 would fit in, it would simply be less of a pairing for me, what a combo, what a privilege to be able to drive both which unfortunately less and less people will be able to experience.

No. You’ve just convinced yourself of these facts since you decided on the purchase when the new one came out and it was faster you felt threatened, eager to dismiss the new model, repeatedly told yourself these things so much that you exaggerated them in your head, and of course you believe them because they back up your choice and of course your choice was the right one.

Just like it was the right choice to let your wife sleep with other men while you watched. It was of course your choice to allow it, so it was the right one.

The move to 4T does seem to be an inevitable trend:

A very well composed and thought out statement. Very enlightening as I feel it says more about you Oliver than it does me.

I appreciate you have a 718, it's your first Porsche and likely your first sports car. Enjoy it but your a little out of your depth for me to take you seriously ;-)

First post on this thread: I love how it refuses to die! Like a weed you think has been extinguished it bursts through again.

Just bought a 981 GTS. Why not a 718? The sound. What a waste.

This post history has given me a full house on Wikipedia article bingo. hehe

How misguided you are!

This is about people who have something and justify it, or revise their reasons for choosing.

But a large number of the 981 choosers here (me included) are exactly that, choosers, i.e. they rejected the choice of the 718 because they simply didn't like it and this is what the 718 defenders simply do not understand.

What's more, there is also an even worse sin than choice-supportive bias:

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/make_a_virtue_of_...

Like some former 981owners or new owners who did NOT have a choice either due to expecting 718 to be better than it actually turned out to be, or because they had to hand in keys of their 981 because of PCP deal requiring a large final baloon payment to be made that many could not afford. biggrin

Those of us who wanted the 981, found the money somehow or bought for cash (having tried and rejected the 718) because we recognised 981 was something very special, and a last chance to get a glorious N/A engine with such a wonderful sound and driving experience.

Did I mention I think the 718 engine sounds like an old Subaru? laugh

You were doing so well until final sentence. I can only assume you haven't owned a Subaru - regretably it sounds very little like a (standard) Subaru, I wish it did.

I’ve not even sat in a scooby for over 15 years but I had a few imports back in the day before they where PlayStation pin up cars and I have to admit I can’t remember them sounding as rough as the 718’s, my memory of course could be failing me but pretty irrelevent as it would not change my view of how bad the 718 sounds.
