I’m not sure about that one. You might notice I was the guy above who said “back to the car chat” what you don’t like is the fact I’m disagreeing with you and using numbers and engineering points where as some of you guys are using what you ‘like’ to slag off the 718. I’ve not slagged the 981 off. I’ve just called out the utter garbage some of you are talking about an excellent car.
Straw man argument. I haven't seen any "slagging" of the 718, the consensus seems to be that it's a generally excellent car, but let down by the engine noise and throttle response.alan718Gts said:
I can’t agree that the F6 is anything special
Nothing special, just a contender for "world's best exhaust note", they say.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MkpTyMNV8E

And just in case there is still any doubt about turbo lag ..........
““Natural aspiration is one of our main USPs,” Andreas Preuninger, head of GT car development at Porsche, told Autocar earlier this year. “At Motorsport, we think we can achieve throttle response and immediacy a little bit better with an atmospheric high-revving engine than any kind of turbo.”
What could he have been talking about......... the new GT4 / Spyder of course. What does that say about what Porsche thinks of its 718 as a drivers car when its not constrained by emissions legislation (especially in markets such as China), mmmmmmm
I think that statement really isn't at all definitive. "we THINK .....a LITTLE BIT better.." Hardly the black and white endorsement of NA that turbo haters would like. Of course he can't make really anti-turbo statements - he does work for Porsche. Personally I'd agree with what he has actually said - regretably, in my view, the 718 doesn't represent the best that can be achieved with current state-of-the-art turbo technology.““Natural aspiration is one of our main USPs,” Andreas Preuninger, head of GT car development at Porsche, told Autocar earlier this year. “At Motorsport, we think we can achieve throttle response and immediacy a little bit better with an atmospheric high-revving engine than any kind of turbo.”

Can't we agree that sound appreciation is ENTIRELY subjective. Yes (to me) the F6 is nice (but not orgasmic as some might say). And (to me) the 718 is pretty dreadful - but I can't validly argue that I am right and people of an opposite view are wrong. I could (reasonably) argue I'm in the majority - but Top Gear is very popular - so I think I'd be on dodgy ground using the populist argument.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MkpTyMNV8E

Not sure. Prefer it to the 981 - and as I have 2 young (<5 year) grandchildren the back "seat" is actually a serious positive. Won't know which way to jump until I've driven the Alpine.hixster said:

Yes, and who needs throttle response anyway?I used to love the way my TTS would bog down when asked to respond to my right foot for a quick getaway at the lights.
Why, oh why, did I sell it and buy the all too eager 981?
This seems pretty fair and objective

To paraphrase he basically says that yes the sound isn’t as good (although he does compliment the F4T) but the engine is much more usable ‘...you get more Cayman, more of the time...’ vs the wonderful symphony of the F6 for small periods...
As someone has owned 986, 987 and now a 718,whilst yes I miss that howl heading down a long slip road on my daily commute rarely (on the roads I drive at least) was ever in that rev range so the trade off to me may be much less than someone who maybe takes his car on a fast country lane for pleasure on a Sunday morning,

Yep people have already agreed that the 718 is probably a better commuter car as its more torquey...... like a diesel.
I’m lucky enough to to be able to reserve my porsches for what sports cars where intended for though hence a 718 does not appeal to me. I’m still not sure I could live with the soundtrack even if commuting, I prefer the sound of my daily ie its electric lol

The moderate and sensible pro 981 posts usually get support from me.
Now delete this tripe and let’s get back to the car chat

Sounds fair. Sort of describes why I’m so happy with mine. I get so much car all the time. It launches me past anything any time. (If you tap your foot to spool the turbo you know what happens? The car drops a gear or you whip your neck. Really, they are your choices. It makes sense why people wouldn’t give up there 981 for a 718. To my mind it is the iPhone losing its headphone jack or home button. A new way of doing things that you don’t necessarily want. All be it the end result is a better product - “more of the car more of the time”
Suits me to the ground. This is an A* smile endurcer of a daily. And Ferrari’s and 911’s can’t shake it on a Sunday morning. All for half the price.
I’m sure the 981 was great. The 718 is fantastic.

I'm looking to change my Boxster, and its amazing to see the price of 2-3 year old 981's on a par with 1 year old 718's.
I guess that shows what the buying market thinks of each car?!?!
Do you have any examples - everytime I look at the opc used market I just see massively overinflated prices, I guess is due to the delivery lead times and limited volume of cars. The 718s don’t seem cheap either, I think I saw one 718 GTS specced up to around £80k!I guess that shows what the buying market thinks of each car?!?!
No doubt they’ll make money out of it one way or another. “Last of the 981s” yeah that’ll cost you...

That’s a smart move on Porsche’s part. Give people 2 pieces of cake to chose from. I guess that shows what the buying market thinks of each car?!?!
F6 - last of a breed. Will prob appreciate over the long run.
F4T - better numbers, tech, and daily usability.
Sounds fair to me
