I took a colleague out in my 718 for a work trip which amounted to a 3 hour round drive. I gave the car some beans in sport response mode for a few runs. They’re comment on the exhaust note was it sounds amazing. I did double check they’re comment and told them about the different sounds and arguments between 718 and 981, but they still came out with the same answer that the 718 sounded amazing.
My Mum always said the same about mine “don’t know why you’re not happy with it!”. And she was used to driving V8’s and V6’s when Dad was around.

I do think if you’ve not had a Porsche Flat 6 before there’s nothing to miss in the 718 and a whole lot to gain provided you don’t care about FI.
Nicely put.

You’ve forgotten my line of work. We get to go out in cars most people on this forum dream about.

And that's great... As a 981 owner I can tell the same story. I have a friend who as no interest in cars beyond it's primary function of getting him from here to there and it's reliable. He has no interest in what my car sounds or the 718 sounds like. You'll find people who like both and some who would, if sampled both, say the 981 sounds better. Or vice-versa. For me... it's not just the sound but that's been covered over many pages.
We like what we like at that's the bottom line. Your car sounds amazing to you, your colleague, whoever... then it does. You're/they're not wrong. It doesn't and should matter what I think.
This thread could've been so much better if it were a discussion rather than who is right, wrong, delude, prehistoric and stubborn. wink
You’ve missed the point.

No I remember but if you’re implying he thought the 718 rivalled super and hyper cars aurally then I just hope this colleague isn’t part of the sound development team!

END OF THREAD?
Yep, can someone just close this thread now.

Absolute nail on the head there.
Someone thinks the older car, with quantifiably worse performance than then the new, is better so we should close this thread? Hahahah. Na. You’ll have to do better than that

'I can't imagine'? Problem would seem to be your imagination then.

I used to take my old 718 CS for a spin on early sunday mornings, and sound was a big part of the pull to get behind the wheel. Windows always open.
Agreed. I flick mine in to sports mode all the time for the same reason.

Wow, give me some examples of the cars people on here can only dream of driving which the 718 sounds good compared to NB you can exclude Tesla.

I honestly cannot think of one assuming the list is sports car orientated and the cars are expensive which you alude to ?

We have, and you are defending the indefensible. The 718's droning rough engines are boring, and sound terrible.

That's the subject of the thread.

Sound is so subject though? Friends just bought an ABARTH 595 COMPETIZIONE for his misses, he reckons its sounds like a supercar , i think it sounds pretty poor to be honest.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?
People neutral to Porsche to be honest dont care or make sarky comments , its just a vw/beetle underneath etc etc, Porsche Owners Club arent interested in anything other than a 911 , so it all comes down to a few journalists and a few 981 owners.
This debate is no different than the Focus Rs mk2 mk3 debate if fact basically the same and the mk3 is a better car, but Mk2 owners disagree, sound familiar?

Who do you mean when you say we? You’ve added nothing to this thread but some snide remarks.
I’d rather read one of Jonttt’s posts than listen to your baseless snaps. No offence J wink

By "we" I mean the vast majority of people who don't care for the 718's engine. Look at the title of the thread, it says "constant whinging", so it's everywhere. I haven't read or seen a single 718 review which is complimentary about the sound of the engine. The opposite is the case.

None taken.

Majority of how many ? you make it sound like thousands and to be honest outside the Porsche world people arent interested? Yes the Porsche owners club dont like the sound but then they dont like the cayster anyway as devalued the brand LOL .

Same role as me. It wasn’t in comparison to any other car and my comment wasn’t meant to imply that smile just that given the breadth of cars we experience they still said it sounded good.

The OP's post was about people moaning about the engine sound, rather than the engine sound per se. His theme was 'it's different, some like it, get over it and let's all move on' - as I understood it.

Fair point, I thought, though the ensuing 104 pages have been mildly amusing and worth following to see what the latest impassioned insults are.;)

Sound, familiar?

Why... Are they awful sounding 4 cylinder turbo cars too?

This.

The 911 owner looks down on the Cayman/Boxster owner for devaluing the brand with their bargain priced, but better balanced & handling sports car. Fed up with being the poor relation we can now look down on the latest version for only having four cylinders and sounding like ste smile

Snobbery in action. Imo of course laugh
