This thread needs more balance, but someone speaks up for the 718 and he’s a troll? I’m no fan (of the 718) admittedly but if you want to see real trolling try NP&E or the Cyclist thread !

No, it's comments like "only 10 people were asked" which marks him out as a troll. Plus, his insistence that I put a number on the 4-pot haters.

Ted seems part of an institution on this thread, posting on it from the beginning. I’ll let him respond on the rest.

That video got me thinking, great perspective. GT4 sounds superb, but the GTS power band (and output) seems like good value, it was seriously quick and let’s face there’re no other options in this segment, who wants a French Renault no matter how good, the M2 is for chavs and Porsche is simply better.

Does sound really matter that much ? Give me old school NA any day of the week, but times change and you can’t possibly say the 718 is a bad car.

Bloated F-Type V6/8 then ?

The noise and FType makes and the sounds of the supercharger spooling up, blows away the sound of any Porsche.

Sure the handling is not as good, but then if you use that argument, then that argument could be put for 981 to 718.!!!!

Nope it does not blow away the sound of any Porsche lol. It is a great engine and great fun though.

re the handling the 981 handles better than the Jag so I don't understand your comment.

Gotta love this thread, especially people talking on behalf of me / others.

I have a 718 and enjoy it enormously, the sound when cold is pretty agricultural to my ears but when’s it’s warm it’s downright naughty and makes me smile. Before anyone accuses me of being a turbo diesel convert I’ve had a previous Boxster and loved that too. Overall it made a nicer noise but that’s not to say that I object to the F4.

To my ears neither seem as good as an 8 cylinder Merc or an F type (not heard the 2.0L) but as a package they aren’t really close. I would have another Merc though, that made me smile as soon as it started.

I do wonder though whether the Boxster is just too fast! Mine’s only a 2.0L and boy can it shift. I sometimes have more fun hooning around in my sons Aygo, well less stressful fun at least. Maybe I need a Euro trip, do they do a “dog rack” as I can’t see where we’ll put the boxers?

Oh well guess I’ll just have to cope with just the 4 cylinders, a silly grin every time I go out and the feeling that I’m very privileged to drive such a great car. I’ll wave if I see any of you out and about, take pity and wave back!

A lack of dog space + passenger is the one shortcoming of a Boxster/Cayman favouring the 911. We’re in the exact same spot, I want to take the car to Europe again but it’s looking like being done in the estate for “practicality”. I’m sure he (medium sized dog) can sit in the passenger footwell but OH disagrees. Two cars then lol.

I did wonder about asking her to follow me in the Disco, room for luggage dogs and the kids. Wonder what the odds are of me surviving that encounter? Any suggestions?

Apparently 7000 people aren't badge snobs and are prepared to wait well over a year for a "Renault"....Or perhaps they think that a Porsche is only a rebadged Skoda...About as silly as 911 owners looking down on 981 owners when most independent observers would say the 981 is the better car.

James stop rising to the bait the guy is a troll who only likes going fast in a straight line thinks country roads are full of mud and tractors, drives "top exec cars " oh and doesn't even have a hot hatch 718! silly

Sorry but accerating hard off the lights does make me smile and judging by the amount of sports cars that try and beat me im guessing thats why most have them . If power speed werent important we wouldnt have them?
Why do you have an rs when a bog standard will do .

Basically you cant speed these days so bursts of acceration and a blast off the lights is the best you can hope for these days?

Im more than confident in b road abilities when they dont have tractors, mud or speed traps

Btw i dont have a 718 but the sound doesnt bother me, what i have found people who dont know Porsche cars really couldnt tell, cant be bothered or just slag them off?
Lol not a troll at all .just because i challenge facts that are stated? You cant quote everyone then not give numbers and the 10 then was tongue in cheek biggrin
Porsche club gb has a membership total of 21000 so not a huge amount of people and how many did the poll?

Im happy with cars i drive and have driven.
I cannot lie i do enjoy speed as with truth be known so do alot of others
Sold my last car to raise house funds ,but if i had a 718 id be extremely happy.
So please explain why the above quotes cause you an issue?
Oh and if you are going to quote me please read first as i clearly said driven top execs not drives as you have stated!

The Merc 8 pot engine is mighty but tuneful it is not, in its present form it sounds more like a broken diesel tractor engine. What an awful thing.

Most Porsche sports car owners I have spoken to down the years class the 'Merc as a bit of a British tool mobile ala RS3, as bad as things can get with the 718 sound-track at least one can retain a semblance of self-dignity whilst travelling in the UK. I would not have a problem owning and driving one in Germany mind you, if i was deaf.

The main problem with the Jag is lack of luggage space, whomever designed the boot needs to be shot. It ticks most of all the other boxes, if you can accept that its a more of a GT waft mobile.

It is back to the 718 then, with a broken face, a tear in the eye, whilst muttering a Carlton Heston 'Apes quote under your breath.....

I haven’t tried the latest iterations of the Merc engine, I’m probably a couple of generations out of date. Used to sound great to my ears.

The Jag is a good looking thing but couldn’t agree more about the boot, worse for me was the dealership in Nottingham, absolutely useless.

We went to try a Jag. First thing my wife touched broke off. We didn't buy one.

I've Just bought a new petrol lawnmower. To look at, its almost exactly the same as my neighbours, but his is a 2015 model, mine is a 2018.

I was out mowing my lawn on Sunday and he came out and told me, to my fat face, that his mower sounded so much better than mine.

“Really” I replied, “that’s nice”.
“Yes” he retorted “those new ones are dog sh@t, I wouldn’t have one given, they sound like a strangled crocodile”
“But it’s blades are much sharper so it gives a better cut” I said
“Sounds crap” he said
“Uses less fuel too” I said
“Sounds terrible” he said
“I think it sounds alright actually” I said
“Yeah but my old one sounds amazing, and the handle on mine is nicer too” he said
“But mine cuts the grass quicker” I said
“Sounds rubbish though, and that’s what counts, who cares if it gives a better cut, or does it quicker, there’s no way I’d ever buy one if those”
“Well George (my neighbour’s called George), thank you for giving me your valued opinion, and, as always, you are correct. I shall instantly bin it and go and buy the one you like”

Then, and this is the bit that really pee’d me off, he said his wife was better looking than mine. And she’s not. And, he said his wife is a better singer than mine. And I don’t think she is.

Funny but over simplified and totally misses the point depending who's pro the 'older mower' wink
