OP... which do you own? 981 or 718?
Hi All. So many responses ! I was in the market for one and trying to decide on a 981 vs a 718 for some time before deciding on the newer car. My point was there is so much written about this topic that if you are in the market for one it really detracts from what is a great car. I also think the perspective on this is somewhat lacking (at least for a regular person like me vs an "enthusiast".) It definitely caused me pause for thought (potentially no bad thing) but when IMO there is really no need because a lot of this issue is blown out of all proportion. What is interesting is the "perceived" unpopularity of the noise despite the higher global sales figures seems to have led to some great finance deals, so with Porsche underwriting high residuals I guess shouldn't complain too strongly. Carfection just grated with me most recently as I usually enjoy their reviews.
Thank you for all your responses (either agreeing or not!), enthusiasts and purists obviously have very strong feelings about this. My intention here is not to dredge up an old thread for "amusement" but to make some genuine comments and gauge opinions from people about the purchasing experience at present.
OP when you pick up your GTS tomorrow you really won't give a monkeys as it's the best looking Porsche on the market at the moment IMO.
Does the 981 GTS sound better-yes. Does the 718GTS sound good-yes I got the sales guy to give one the beans and it is a real sports car sound.
Balance this against the 981 on looks and the 718GTS wins in that department-not that the 981 is a bad looking car(it's lovely) but the 718GTS has a nicer back end.
As far as residuals go for either a 718GTS or 981 GTS then nobody has a crystal ball and 981 owners will claim theirs will hold value better and vice versa-human nature.
Enjoy the car and plenty pics from tomorrow-I'm jealous.

The 718 engine noise is a deal-breaker for me. It sounds awful. When I was a kid I wanted a BMX Burner for Christmas but I got a Grifter instead.
All my mates took the p*ss. They called it the tank!
I didnt care! It was cool because the bike was mine and I didnt have to share it with my brother.
I recommend you take pride in your ownership of your 718 and ignore the people who dont like it.

Exactly! Who gives a st? Everyone is so bloody precious these days, and the most important thing when buying or doing anything is to make sure you get accepted by your peers.
Loved having the 930 flatnose, as most everyone hated it. GT2 universally unliked as well, suits me just fine.

Well not quite universally old boy :0
Word on the street is, now yours has been fettled by an individual who actually knows what he's doing and has two brain cells to rub together, it's a mighty fine piece of kit
I, for one, look forward to your review
As for the sound of the 4 pot Cayman and Boxsters, Stuttgart need to use some equal length exhaust manifolds and possible change the firing order.
Have a listen to the difference it can make :
Group A Subaru Impreza with UNequal length exhaust manifolds (very harsh, uneven combustion pulses) :

WRC Impreza (exactly the same flat 4 engine but with equal length exhaust manifolds and revised firing order) Far more even and smoother combustion pulses) :

Watching those videos I think I actually quite like the unequal length exhaust sound; but then I did buy a 718... That said it does have an almost 'yobbish' quality and is definitely rougher when compared to the smooth sound of the F6.
No complaints from me after running one for 16 months, I have just booked in for my first windscreen replacement after chipping it while commuting yesterday - the sacrifices you make running one as an [excellent] DD !

I do get what OP means. There are some cars that always get mentioned in a positive light and some that always seem to be mentioned in a negative. EVO hates on the 718 2.0 so much they gave it 3.5 stars. Every time disappointing engine sound is discussed for any subject seemingly the 718 gets a dishonourable mention.
We have a 718 without PSE and it is fairly quiet, I don’t find it nearly as offensive as testers say. It’s charcterful in its own right and without PSE resides into the background when cruising.

Well we f6 owners understand your loss.
It must be a terrible thing to realize that you bought the wrong car and burst into tears at the sound of your engines.
I often burst into laughter when I pass an old 4 cylinder car like an escort 1600 thinking a 718 has just gone by.
Still, how you get over the stigma of a owning a 718 I will never know?😓😓😓😓😓😓😓😁
Don't worry I'll be thinking about you...........
Only joking, or am I!_______?

Can the moderators set up a filter that stops any post with the words "718" and "noise" in it?
It's tiresome.
Some people don't like the noise. Others have no issue with it.
Nothing can be said that will change that.
Let's move on and never speak of it again. It's pointless.
Blimey, been here two months and trying to set the rules? It's tiresome.

I bought a 718CS 7 months ago, the noise is the reason I’m constantly scouring PH classifieds and Porsche Approved stock. It didn’t bother me to start with but I’m missing the F6 so much now, just gotta find the right replacement or get lucky with a 718 Spyder. It’s a real shame because everything else about the 718 is amazing

Im picking up my 718 Cayman tomorrow morning at 0800, assuming it ever stops snowing. It feels like Christmas Eve, and I love everything about it including the guttural noise it makes and consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to drive such a car.
To the OP - who cares what the owners of older cars with different engines think? There is surely room for us all?
People are being blown to bits cowering in their homes in Syria. Car noise?
Love to all, however many cylinders you have.
