I've Just bought a new petrol lawnmower. To look at, its almost exactly the same as my neighbours, but his is a 2015 model, mine is a 2018.

I was out mowing my lawn on Sunday and he came out and told me, to my fat face, that his mower sounded so much better than mine.

“Really” I replied, “that’s nice”.
“Yes” he retorted “those new ones are dog sh@t, I wouldn’t have one given, they sound like a strangled crocodile”
“But it’s blades are much sharper so it gives a better cut” I said
“Sounds crap” he said
“Uses less fuel too” I said
“Sounds terrible” he said
“I think it sounds alright actually” I said
“Yeah but my old one sounds amazing, and the handle on mine is nicer too” he said
“But mine cuts the grass quicker” I said
“Sounds rubbish though, and that’s what counts, who cares if it gives a better cut, or does it quicker, there’s no way I’d ever buy one if those”
“Well George (my neighbour’s called George), thank you for giving me your valued opinion, and, as always, you are correct. I shall instantly bin it and go and buy the one you like”

Then, and this is the bit that really pee’d me off, he said his wife was better looking than mine. And she’s not. And, he said his wife is a better singer than mine. And I don’t think she is.
Funny but over simplified and totally misses the point depending who's pro the 'older mower' wink
I see. So if now all my other neighbours start saying my mower sounds terrible compared to George’s older, fantastic sounding but not so great at mowing, mower, then will I have hit the point? Does that mean that my mower is indeed a terrible sounding mower, even though I like it and think it sounds fantastic, and that all my neighbours who do not like the sound of my mower are actually correct that they don’t want to buy my mower because they don’t like how it sounds.

It's a good analogy if it's purely about the sound of the old mower...
Where your analogy falls down is for most us it's not that singular point. Not just the sound. The who'll mower thing is too simplistic.
Cut to the chase... Many here have said the 718 is a great car, it's faster, Porsche have improved the handling and steering a bit and it has better tech.
No one is arguing about that. You love your car for all those reasons and think it's great. You think it sounds amazing. Me personally. I'm not going to tell you, you are dead wrong. It's what you think.
I personally don't like the sound or the way the power is delivered. Tech I'm not bothered about, yes it's hands down better than my 981 but tech is just not a reason I'm going to step from mine to a 718. It's faster... I've had my car 2 years now and it I don't feel short of performance on an early Sunday morning drive. I prefer the way the F6 delivers the power, revving it out, working for the rewards and it's responsive just trundling around as well as when on it. There's drama there all the time.
It's just what I prefer from a car a whole. Now, am I to be accused of being in denial simply because the 718 is faster and handles a bit better?
And don't forget the 718 isn't a brand new from the ground up car. it's a facelift of the 981, refined and honed a bit more.
I know it's not going to happen but if the mainstream 718's had the F6, I'd want one but they don't and I don't. and to be clear. It's not just about the noise.

So, Foundthecure. I haven't slagged the 718 off, I just prefer something else. You tell me what's wrong with that....?

I never thought if it that way and your post really got me thinking, should I buy a 718........nope still don;t like it but thank you.

Ps you really should get a robotic mower, they are a lot quieter and you won;t disturb your neighbour , I love mine, best thing I have bought this year ;-)

Serious sense of humour failure going on here, I thought the Mower analogy was a welcome bit of light relief!

It's a metaphor, and not a particularly well-considered one.

Mowing the lawn is a domestic chore, driving a sports car is done for pleasure.

I fully agree. My wife finds the absolute opposite. Is she wrong, or do people just enjoy different things?
She cuts the grass while I’m out in the car, I don’t come home and tell her how dull cutting the grass is.

My wife got a 718 as a company car, I quite like the sound, it’s a great little car to drive.

She drives it quite conservatively so it’s fairly quiet though. hehe

I remember checking out some older boxters years ago and to me, this feels a much better car. I’m not sure if they’ve got bigger inside but I’m tall and barely fitted in some earlier models, this has a lovely seating position and you can look out and see some sexy curves on the front wheel arches. It actually feels like a classic car or even some older TVRs (without the exhaust obv)

I’m no Porsche fan but these are great cars.

Precisely. You read so much "Porsche bashing" and then get into a thread like this where there's so much "718 bashing" but step beyond the nonsense and there's nothing to touch them for the money. IMO Porsche use these entry level cars as effectively their loss leader for the entire range. Stunning value.

Definitely not a loss leader . The caysters are Porsches lowest selling model now . Which ironic as it saved the company.
I believe only 15k sold world wide last year . They sold more 911,s but over 100,000 macans!

So what do you see as the level playing field competitor for Cayster? I don't think there are any - because Porsche is able to cross-subsidise unprofitable base Caysters from (a) more expensive models, and (b) the options list. Even Renault's attempt at a new sports car starts £5,000 more expensive. Ariel will charge you more for a Honda engine installed in a few bits of scaffolding. 718s can be an absolute bargain.

Rivals are just not able to compete with the Cayster on price.... The 718 & 911 sit on what is basically the same platform configured in either mid engined 2 seat or rear engined 4 seat format. The interior/dash is basically the same... massive economy of scale. The TT has the economy of scale but as a car, it doesn’t come close but some will see it as a rival.
The Ariel, well that shows what tiny production numbers cost to put on the road. It’s a focus on fun, no one is going to drive that all year round.
And then we have the Alpine. I’ve seen it up close and sat in... Great to drive by all accounts but looks expensive because it’s a Renault. Unique all aluminium body, double wishbones all round... Renault have pushed the boat out but can’t bring it in at anything like the price Porsche can push the Cayster out the showroom for.
And you think base Caysters are ‘unprofitable.’
The word doesn’t exists at Porsche... it’s widely known they make massive profit on every car they make. Around £14k/car

There really isn’t much new to touch the 718 for the price, F4T or not.

Yes the Boxster saved Porsche and then the Cayenne became even more popular.
