All of this discussion begs the question I often ask myself (not that I am thinking of parting with my Boxster 981 GTS anytime soon) what would I replace it with? Go for something completely different - C63AMG maybe as I love the engine in that car and you can buy delivery mileage ones at nearly £20k below list? Save some money and choose the next generation Golf R? Or an Audi RS3? Probably not a 718 unless what it’s replaced with in a couple of years has an engine more appealing to me? Neither a low mileage used 991/2 as they are making crazy, almost new money and can’t justify that kind of money. Wouldn’t want a hard core sports car however as The Boss would veto that in comfort grounds, as she would anything with a bone jarring ride.

You omitted the A110 too. It's not hardcore at all - more comfortable than a 981 or 718 on standard suspension, and quieter too at a cruise (that never gets mentioned in road tests) - a better long distance partner (luggage space apart) than a Cayman imo.

True - although I’m always a little bit worried about the fragility and reliability of French cars to be honest - might be worth a look though I agree

I’m more than happy with my decision to sell the 488 and keep the 981, its still in my garage at the end of this summer. The Renault just does not appeal to me at all, its partly the styling but fundamentally a 4 pot FI engine. I’ll stick to a great NA engine whilst I can.

Sound is a massive part of a sports car as it what fundamentally sets a sports car apart from other road cars. My daily is as fast / faster than the 981 or the Renault but its not a sports car. The biggest difference in sports cars in terms of real world performance is the driver not the car, whereas the biggest difference in the emotion of the drive is the sound and feel of the car over a wide range of driving abilities. NA and a great sound have it for me every time. If I wanted more performance I would want significantly more performance but that would cost me exponentially more, it is diminishing returns in that one respect, been there done it thank you very much.

I am genuinely excited about hybrid tech over the next 5 years. I love tech and it will solve many of the historic issues with FI and bring genuine supercar performance to the mass market. But that will only highlight the fact that after a certain point that does not really matter in the real world, other factors than “performance” will be much more important and it will only highlight how glorious a NA engine was to drive. I’ll be lucky enough to experience both I hope. As I’ve said before the 4 pot FI engined cars of today are simply a stop gap, to appease the legislators before the new tech is ready. They are a compromise and simply would not be made other than to meet emissions targets.

if the A110 is on PS4Ses then the difference may be completely down to the tyres (it's been pointed out on here many times how much better the Michelins are in the wet/cold).
Of course that may be true (we have no way of knowing)
that would make for a very interesting test - swap the Michelins for Pirellis on the A110 and vice versa on your old 981 smile

I'm not so sure it would tell us too much. The only instrumented test of the latest PZeros (ie essentially the same as N1 Pirellis) I've seen the Pirellis came a close second to the Michelins. In any case the A110 is fitted with PS4 not PS4S and, I believe, the rear tyre is specially formulated for the A110 to make it more progressive.
