This isn’t the highlight from the 981 side by the way...

Mr Cat you still do seem to be stuck in a loop [of posting reviews]... as does this thread.

You've made the same tedious 'point' over and over again.

I don't lie awake at night fretting that 75% of the Porsche GB OC think I'm a knobber for ordering a 718. I don't give a flying fk what they, or anyone, thinks. No doubt some of them are currently stalking this thread while knocking one out. I'm very happy for them.

Sensible and mature adults will appreciate there is room for both persuasions without the need for rabid brainwashing.

No chance of us forgetting anything with you around to continually cut and paste exactly the same points into this thread.

We keep saying it, the 718 is a brilliant car but, with the F4T in its current form, we’re not interested.
You definitely do keep on saying it...

Sweet jesus, you lot all still going on this ? Sound, blub, the heart of the car, blub. I'm seriously tearing up for all of you all in reading this. There aren't any other options, nasp is dead outside of the GT cars now, and Porsche clearly don't value your sound obsession or future custom it would seem. Get over it !!

I did enjoy the Zambian dance and some of the other clips though, DJ - who knew you could be so funny ! smile

Cmoose this is not like you, where’s the usual finesse ? Your usual vocabulary is clearly lacking. Vanacular sounds spectacular but I suspect it won’t be [since it involves vans]. That must be some hangover, hope it was a good night!

RR four cylinder or not, that’s not a reason to give up your main hobby. F—k ‘em and put in an order for that Spyder. If they can’t deliver you’ll get one from somewhere else!

Why should we get over it ?

I still can’t get over losing to Utd last weekend, why should I get over porsche making the 718 sound crap ?

I can’t do anything about either but that does not mean I should get over it. At least with a car if enough people moan about it a manufacturer may listen one day.
JT it was a great car no doubt. But life moves on. Keep moving with it ? What benefit is there from remaining stranded in the past ?

Not bulls*it at all. If all you need is a reliable practical fun to drive car -and if it’s the only car you can have it fits the bill perfectly.

It certainly sounds a whole lot better and more civilised than any 718 does, not that that achievement is very difficult.

DC snide 718 comments aside, you sound like a good chap. Ignore the dinosaurs and embrace the future. Nice looking 981 Boxster btw. Now order that 718 GTS!

I have a new 488 and new 740 why would I want to buy an inferior 718 to the 981 when I bought the 981 instead of a 718 in the first place ?

I have about as modern as you can get.....and your point is ?
Clearly lost on you . Nice garage by the way, but please try to keep an open mind, the world keeps changing. Sometimes for the better !

He definitely wins an award for the most tenacious contributions to the thread (whether balanced or not.) Even I got bored of this one after so long and he just keeps on it throughout, I don't mean that as a slight. I think I promised an award to the 981 side some pages back, JTT deserves it. Whether he takes a more balanced view these days however, I leave to you guys to judge...

NB: I'm not suggesting any opinions about who is 'winning' the argument however... if indeed there is anything to be won. I imagine this one will run and run until the E-Cayman comes out. smile

It has already been demonstrated on this thread (some time ago) that its much cheaper to get a 718 even on Porsche finance than it was for an equivalent 981

Edited by jonttt on Thursday 5th April 10:27
Last I saw the 981 was sold from around 39750 and the 781 is now available from 42k. I've not seen or heard on here of too many discounts being offered either, although I agree with you the current finance deal is quite good - but they are still charging interest, (I would prefer 0% to do one of these) and there is still a fairly chunky deposit required (9-11k) which is still a fair bit more than I've seen for a PCP on a family hatch. GFVs are strong and although PCP finance certainly drives growth in the new car market (or lack of based on the news today, road tax apart) I don't think that's really changed much in the time since they were selling the 981.

Depends on your read, all these cars whether 981s or 718s have excellent residuals so I guess they can offer a higher GFV than on something like an F-Type which just haemorrhages depreciation (great used prices though!)

Whether 981 or 718 residuals are stronger remains to be seen, but I'd hazard a guess Porsche / VWFS are unlikely to be taking a loss on them.

If it's a "back end" discount that's great, but will be more than likely offset by the interest charged.

I think was already mentioned earlier, but that sure is a lot of deliveries for an enthusiast's car that sounds 'crap' !

My original point in starting the thread was that the sound criticism was overcooked and out of proportion to the issues at hand. After 58 pages, I just keep on seeing that same point reinforced.

On all quantifiable metrics the 718 is better. It is newer, it is faster, (imo) it is better value, has better finance. It has better technology, you even get more options as standard than you did on the 981 where you had to pay for basic stuff like bluetooth. It is more efficient and for the lucky few who ordered under the old tax system, it is even cheaper to tax, etc etc. What about looks ? The 981 owners like the 981. I personally think the 981 grill is a bit wonky and the back end on the 718 is far nicer. The sound ? Is different. Would you trade F6 sound for F4T acceleration ? Personally I would, it's ridiculously quick - 0-60 not definitive but C&D clocked the base at 3.9s! You get equal or better than 981S performance for the base 718 price. IMO I know, but what a bargain. Given the choice used 981 vs 718 for me is the latter every time. I think even new 981 vs new 718 and I'd take the latter as well. Just as JTT can't understand how people actually(!) like 718 sound, I truly just can't understand anyone would choose the old F6 engine sound over such a massively improved car.

I guess we will continue to debate these things in detail for the next 58 pages and JTT can continue to tell us repeatedly how the sound makes him 'wince' whilst continuing to 'rubbish' any postings in favour of the 718 ;-)

We bought the car we drive because we felt it was the better car with a free choice between the two. What more honest / unbiased view of a car than that can you get ?
I imagine that applies to most of us. Some people's decision criteria will remain a mystery however :-)
