I recently got a new (to me) 981 Cayman, and can't get it to play bluetooth audio off my phone? My last one was a couple of years older and the bluetooth audio (sometimes wouldn't appear on the list, but when it did, it) always worked fine. The new one though, when I try to connect to my phone over Bluetooth from the 'Aux' settings it says

Device without Aha is not supported along with iPod usage.

confused

Having done some Googling it would appear my new car might have 'Online Services' which work via an app called 'Aha Radio'. Is that right? Also I currently have an old iPod connected to the USB port which I presume is what it's referring to.

I've not played with Aha at all yet, and will do separately now I know I can. However, does this mean there's no way to connect my phone to just play whatever audio I want (ie, not just stuff on Aha) because of online services? For example I would like to be able to play from Podcasts saved to my phone, or Spotify, etc.

Any help with explaining this to me hugely appreciated!

I must admit on mine I play music off my iPhone through the USB cable connection, never tried with Bluetooth. But I don’t have the optional on line services with mine. Sorry I can’t help further...I know to be able to upgrade to real time traffic info you need both on line services and the Aha radio app, so might be worth downloading and trying (it’s free).

I have online services and Aha and installed the app on my phone (android). I did look into this when I got the car 12 months ago but to be honest I have forgotten what I read. I can play Spotify via Bluetooth / my phone no problem though.

I do have the full phone connection as well (not just Bluetooth, can’t remember what its called) which basically uses the cars antenna etc.... but can’t see how that would make a difference.

I did remember that I had no problem setting everything up / getting it working just can’t remember exactly what I did.

The Aha app is basically rubbish for streaming music but, in your case, is fab for real-time traffic updates for the nav. If your phone is an Apple you need to use a wired connection to make it work. Android phones work fine via Bluetooth. I have never had any problem with streaming Deezer from my phone (Android) via Bluetooth. It's a bit basic on my 2016 BGTS but I can listen or skip forward a track if I hate the sh*t that's playing. I just can't go back a track....v. annoying! Have you tried unplugging the ipod and seeing if the streaming works then?

I'm just confused as I'm an iPhone user so understand it has to be plugged in to use Aha, which is fine and I will play around with it at some point. However the thing is I just want normal A2DP streaming to work in the same way it did in my last 981, completely separate to Aha.

I'll experiment more still with things like unplugging the iPod, and using Aha, etc, but it's beginning to seem to me like A2DP will only work with Android because I've got 'online services'. If that is the case, it'd be quite tempting to pop down to a dealership to ask if they can remove the online services, and just have it work like my old one.

The other possibility of course is that there's no correlation between A2DP not working and having online services. Could it be instead just a newer version of PCM which works differently? Last car was a 63 plate, new one is a 16.

I’ve now had more of a play with it, and I’ve learnt a few things:
  • Aha Radio itself does nothing for me. I really see no place for it in my life.
  • With my phone plugged it in happily plays audio including through the car’s speakers. However on Spotify I inexplicably can’t adjust the volume. That is maddening.
  • If I unplug my iPod/phone then suddenly my phone can play audio over Bluetooth, which the main thing I wanted to start with, and it works perfectly!
  • If I plug my iPod back in the Bluetooth immediately cuts off.
Why is that last point so? I just don’t get it at all! My last 981 would happily have iPod plugged in and Bluetooth audio connected at the same time. The only difference as far as I can see is Aha, which I just have no use for, and I don’t see how any of these things need to be mutually exclusive. 😕

As above I think the AHA app does more than just stream music e.g. live traffic info to the sat nav.
