Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that posts in order to help others so I hope someone finds this useful.
My 07 cayman s was fine until I turned the key to start. Then nothing!! Everything goes dead, key stuck in the ignition, bonnet won't open.
If you need to open the bonnet with no battery, open the fuse box by your right foot, pull out bonnet release and attach positive jump lead, the negative anywhere handy on the car. The bonnet will now open.
Skipping all the normal battery checks wiggle the positive battery lead as close to the bulkhead as you can, if your car springs into life you have an issue with the connector between the live from the battery and the main distribution box inside the car behind the glove box.
If you would like to know more about the fault and how I fixed it just let me know.

Is it safe to attach the positive jump lead to the bonnet release? confused

Yes, open the fuse box near the drives right foot, in there is a orange or red bar with a picture of bonnet release. Pull it out if the fuse box enough to get a positive lead on it. Then open the bonnet as normal allowing access to the battery.
