Extended Warranty worth it?
Discussion
I bought an approved used Boxster S just under 2 years ago, it came with 2 years Porsche Warranty.
Now that the 2 years is nearly up, I've been offered the chance to extend this by a further year or 2.
It's about £1200 for the 2 years - is it worth it?
I have had a few claims in the last two years and have had an absolutely outstanding service from Porsche - but there is so much small print in these warranties that I'm left a bit unsure whether to go 3rd party or stay with Porsche...
Basically, I'm just looking for some advice on what you guys do, and why?

I haven't used Porsche for warranty, but I know if you're looking at extended warranties, manufacturer ones are normally by far the best option.
When I had my F-type, the Jaguar policy was cheaper than the Warranty wise policy.
I think £600 a year is pretty good too, for worry free motoring.

Decision I had to make last year on my 981 Cayman S. Ultimately it's an insurance policy. Given the 981 has a good history, and as I didn't do that many miles and I knew I wasn't going to keep it for another two years, the risk seemed low so I didn't bother :-)
I paid for a 111 point check before the warranty was out for a little bit of piece of mind though.

My 981 heater stopped working for a trip then re-started working. The car is under extended warranty. PGB say...
"I am sorry to learn that you have had an issue with your heater since we last spoke. You have described a clicking noise which is more than likely the fan, which on occasion can stick causing the heater to stop. If this fault occurs again then I would advise speaking with a Porsche Centre who will be able to look at this.
As this fault may be an intermittent issues, I would advise only contacting a Porsche Centre if this fault reoccurs. I understand this may cause inconvenience, however if they centre cannot replicate this fault at the time of investigation, they may not be able to action a repair under warranty."
This seems to be the up to date response on this known issue whereas earlier complainants had their fans replaced, albeit with a new fan which was possibly identical to the original and so the fault may be repeated.
Am I satisfied? No.
Am I taking it further? Oh yes.
PGB should have reported this common issue to the factory and a fix found, but I guess that means a recall?
Let's see how I do with this one, eh?

I won't be taking out the extended warranty next year. I have Zunsport grilles protecting the radiators and condensers on my CGTS and there's no way I'm removing them, given the protection they provide. One large stone would give a serious bill not covered under warranty.
The warranty is basically giving you engine, gearbox and electrics cover. It doesn't cover wear and tear parts, and the 981 has proven to be solid so far, so I'll be comfortable without it

Honestly it's a good buy...most modern Porsches have between 5 & 7 electronic ECU 's , each approx £1500:00 ...yes these dont go that often but if they did..££££... also on a newish car OPC history "usually" gives good credence when selling. Your choice but my experience during last 15 years with 996/997 the OPC warranty has been ( much) cheaper than the repairs needed. Good luck with your choice. Regards. Ian
Thanks all for your views.
I was looking to take the warranty before asking but figured I'd double check...
Given that I've had plenty of things done under warranty over the last 2 years (several thousands of pounds worth) and that, despite my car being 8 years old, I've been given such an outstanding service from Porsche, it really is a no-brainer for just 600 quid a year.
And as an added bonus it's transferable so would definitely help me sell privately if needed.
I'll renew it in the morning with them!

As I've said before, Leicester OPC passed my 981 for its 111 point check and extended warranty with a full set of Zunsports in situ. The warranty is basically giving you engine, gearbox and electrics cover. I even pointed them out when booking the car in and they said no problem.
Whoever is underwriting the extended warranty is making money out of it. Over the years it will, on average, be cheaper to fund the cost of fixing things that go wrong yourself.
But buy a warranty a) if you can't afford the occasional big bill that might arise, b) you feel you might be unlucky enough to have things go wrong, or c) you value enough the peace of mind that a warranty brings you - which might include knowing that if there is a problem you simply go and tell an OPC to fix it.
Scenario c) might apply if you feel you won't own the car long enough to give the law of averages a chance. In which case see also scenario b).

It's been said on here that the warranty provider gets parts at a reduced cost so they can fix the car cheaper than you can yourself. I don't know if that's true or not though. The extended warranty does force you to use Porsche parts on 100% of your car. That's the commitment you have to stick to, which may influence your choice.
I always renew the Warranty, and maintain originality and service history with Porsche, for peace of mind.
Over the years, I've probably paid more in premiums than I've benefitted from in claims, but I value the security, and I've never had any quibbles.
The other benefit is that it makes it much easier to sell privately at a better price. Private buyers feel much more reassured buying a car with warranty, that they can then extend if they wish.

I definitely would. I have recently taken extended warranty out on our BGTS. The way I look at it is the warranty costs £600 per year plus the 111 point check and it doesn’t take much to break on a Porsche to cost more than that. I had an adaptive drivetrain mount go on mine ( if you have sport chrono then you have these), they are a known weak spot and replacement cost according to the dealer is £1,000 plus labour plus VAT. The extended warranty even covers items such as xenon headlight bulb failure. No brainer IMHO.Now that the 2 years is nearly up, I've been offered the chance to extend this by a further year or 2.

Interesting; thanks. I'll need to mull over again whether to renew the Porsche warranty on my CGTS when it expires (the warranty, that is) in September. Might be an issue over the Zunsport front grilles though...
That's my issue entirely. I would probably take out the extended warranty to cover the risk of something failing, but removing my grilles and almost guaranteeing that I'll damage my radiators/condensers would negate the benefit of the warranty.I’m. in the same boat, due for 111-point check/warranty extension in August (all booked)......OPC assured me grilles would not be an issue, BUT I fear voiding the warranty on this very issue, should they wish to.....the written contract is really quite clear on the matter.
What pisses me right off is they recognise the issue, hence the grilles on the GT cars!!!

Do you know how it 'works' with the 111 point check. What pisses me right off is they recognise the issue, hence the grilles on the GT cars!!!
Hypothetically would Porsche say that I need to replace my tyres (that are at about 2.5mm) or they won't extend the warranty, thus wasting the cost on the 111 point check that I booked in for next week?
Or do they only look at warranty parts?
My car is completely standard.
