Hi
My 911 has been out of action for a few weeks waiting for a part and the local dealer has loaned me a Boxster S. I must admit I really love it. More fun than the 911, not much slower, seems much more eager to wag its tail on wet roundabouts and be generally more playful at speeds that are lower than in the 911. Never thought I would possibly think of moving the GTS on at all let alone for a 4. CyLinder Boxster s! I’ve got a cayman for the next few days to see if I prefer it to the Boxster but tbh I’m very tempted by either!
Anyone else moved from flat 6 to flat 4 power?!
911 to 718?!!!
If so any regrets?!
Cheers

Weighing heavy on your mind if you’re pondering it at 4am biggrin

No advice to give but interesting to hear your thoughts.

I test drove an F6 (981j vs an F4T. As my excessively lengthy thread about the engine sound demonstrates, some people have particularly strong feelings about it all. (Mentioning no names, Jontt smile )

My view, the whinging about the F4 is significantly exaggerated. The engine is more powerful, offers more torque and is also more efficient, and the 718 is a far better car than the 981 (I can’t speak about the 911) - so what’s not to like, and the torquey acceleration on the 718 is simply awesome.

The later press reviews are far more balanced, see autoexpress or even whatcar on the 718 from last week - also mentioned in the above thread.

I’m sure someone will be along shortly to mention how moving to the F4T is sacrilege, unless they’re out enjoying spring weather as I will be shortly!

I'm a 911ophile; bought a new Carrera 3.2 in the '80s and had a new 911 every 2-3 years ever since - so 2x most models up to the GT3T.

However, I can really see the appeal of the Cayman - especially since the 981. In fact I did have a GT4 for a year, but think a nicely optioned 981 S or GTS is particularly sweet. In some ways it's more '911' than the 991 - imo, better looking, more compact, lovely chassis, similar useable performance, super practical for everyday use, and still relevant, even on the UK's dreadful, congested, crumbling road system. And you still get a fabulous NA flat-6 behind your ears biggrin

OP, members of the Flat Six Society here, after recovering from apoplectic episodes, will be suggesting that you seek psychiatric help, and quick.

Myself, I confess to being a flat six fan... But each to his own. The 982 is a great car and if you like it better than your current steed, then go for it.

I’ve not gone to F4T, but I did go from a 996T to a 981GTS, and I’ve not looked back once. The 911 was a real weapon and a special thing, but the buggers gave me a Cayman GTS as a loaner and it was just like you say - a car with a naughty sense of humour/fun, more sensation of speed, and an epic exhaust note (the 996T wasn’t great on that score). 12 months (and a couple of other 981/718 loaners) later, I had to scratch the itch and made the jump.
When people ask which Porsche I drive, 911 Turbo did sound better than Cayman, but I’ve done the 911 thing so I can live with that. The cayman makes me feel like a giddy teenager every single drive, and I want to drive it everywhere. That’s not something I felt with the 996T, where I felt I had to be on my A-game, and didn’t want to waste its time caught in traffic.

Would it be worth trying an early 981S, with a view to keeping both cars?

By the 981 'GTS' the Cayman/Boxster capability was getting uncomfortably close to the 991, and the differential was almost whether you needed a 2-seater or 2+2.

I do think the move to a smaller capacity 4-pot turbo was, aside from legislative demands, to try and put some clearer space between the entry level 718 and the premium 991.

If I was going from 991 to Cayman, I think the engine would be the defining factor.

I chose a used 981 Cayman GTS over a 718 because of the utterly dismal and uninspiring 4-cyl engine noise. The 718 is fatally flawed because of this, IMO.
