I’m really fascinated by n17ves comments about the performance comparison with an R8 V10, he says his car is standard, and is quicker under brakes and through curves, and that the V10 only pulls out a “few car lengths” on the straight. My GT4 was so demolished by what looked like standard V10’s , I beginning to think maybe there is something wrong with both my straight line performance, and my own ability to brake and corner ?
I’m really keen to see n17ves with his car on track, I’d like to try to learn a bit from him, so when are out next young man ?

You're not the only one! The gen 2 R8 V10+ is a very, very fast car....the GT4 (whilst a fantastic sports car) isn't.

Cant deny that the R8 is very quick I a straight line, but definitely not my experience with the r8 destroying the GT4 on track... I hate comparing facts and figures over the internet but the R8 V10 plus does have a very similar lap time to the GT4 on the nurburg ring, and that track will always favour a high powered car!

Regardless, my intention wasn't to offend you and I believe we have mutual friend that also owns a GT4, so I'm sure we'll be on track together soon enough.

Not offending me at all. although I'm getting on a bit, I'm always very keen to learn, I still take instruction on a regular basis, so I'm just really keen to see what you do that I don't ? Do you have any plans for track days in the near future ?

I have a similar question to the OP I was told today by my SA that I will get a 718 GT4 - I put deposit down almost 2 years ago. I traded my 2004 Ferrari manual 360 spider for a brand new 2016 Cayman GTS in late 2016. (I got the car and a nice cheque from Porsche and was also offered a new 718 S as well at the time but love nasp engines so went with the 981. I love driving my sapphire blue GTS and enjoy it on the track - it is not my daily car. However I would like more straight line power as well as the sublime handling of the Porsche. I have a chance to move on a 2012 or 2014 Audi R8 5.2 gated manual. So do I wait for the 718 GT 4 or keep my GTS and then move on the GT4 or buy the R8.

Have they released 718 GT4’s already? I’m after a 718 Spyder but no OPC can confirm release date, price, let alone leave a deposit... !

That’s what I’ve been told by three different OPCs (two in UK and one in Netherlands), but GPGPS he put a deposit down for a 718 GT4, or I misunderstood? Maybe there is a way to get onto a secret list for this apparently ultra limited edition cars...?

The car has fully adjustable suspension on the front and can be made fully adjustable on the rear with a couple of additional parts.
Understeer can be eliminated with a geo configuration, and understanding how to take advantage of MR layout - i.e upgrade the driver.

With respect to the MotorTrend review I think the text write up and the video review acknowledged that the car didn't have an optimal geo setup.
Randy Pobst then did some work with TPC for another review - and when running a properly set up car with the DSC, he was totally blown away.

As for the gearing.. its down to personal taste. But I think it is the single general gripe of the car.
If it had shorter ratios it would have extremely explosive performance.. so its clear that Porsche made a decision not to enhance this aspect of the drivetrain to help maintain the hierarchy in the brand line up.. i.e. Not faster than a GT3 from the factory at basically 2/3rd the list price.

Again with performance upgrades you can overcome some of the gearing issues, as there are dips in the power curve which once ironed out make the gearing much less of an issue.

I've driven one of TPC's GT4s on track, as well as having Randy give me some passenger laps, and the car and that damper system are amazing. Summit Point is an old track with a stty surface, but it felt as if it had just be repaved.

People may have deposits down but it means nothing until they have a signed order form, which they can't have until the car actually exists in the Porsche ordering system.

Every OPC will have a list containing more buyers than they will receive cars and upon release they will choose who gets one. It may be too late now to get an allocation when the car is released. It all depends how many they build and what the demand is like.

Thanks twinfan. I asked to be included in a list if the had one, and all three said they didn’t.. maybe I’m new to this and missing a gear, but same answer across the noted OPC spectrum appears to indicate no such list exists..

I put down a deposit nearly 2 years to be on the list. My SA whom I bought the GTS from said 99% I’m getting an allocation, so still no guarantee. He suggested I put down a deposit on a GT3 if I’m allocated GT4. I hope I get one and if I offered one and if it’s a nasp with manual option and the price is not ridiculously priced - then I will follow through. If not, I keep my GTS or hunt down a unicorn R8

GT cars, and the Spyder, are low volume and in order to stand a chance of an allocation you will need to have a relationship with an OPC. Ringing them up and asking to go on a list will get you nowhere, as you've found out. It's a pain in the backside but you will need some history with an OPC, preferably the closest one to where you live.

Do you currently own a Porsche? Do you get it serviced at an OPC? Have you got a sales advisor you speak to or can contact?

None of these cars can be bought by dropping into a dealer and asking for one I'm afraid as they are limited in production by the capacity of the factory.

I own and enjoy my Boxster 981 S

Have direct contact with the principal director of my local OPC, but as I’m looking for left hand drive need to liaise with Mayfair or Netherlands (or elsewhere in Europe)... so my chances are slim...
