Cayman 981 Steering Creaking Advice
Discussion
Hi all,
I am on the brink of getting my first Porsche, exciting times!
I viewed the car yesterday, its a 2013 Cayman S PDK, 23k miles, mint condition however when i drove it the first thing i noticed pulling out the car space was a loud creaking noise as i turned the steering left to right and vice versa, it appears to be coming from below the car, probably the front but not really got down to listen, but its pretty loud and easilly audible inside the car. It occurs when in drive and at very low speed when i have the brakes on, in general driving it does not occur just at low speed and also does not occur if I am in Park or Neutral.
As it does not occur in P or N i am assuming its not strut or subframe related but i could be wrong.
The guy at the dealer says its normal (of course) and he hears it on his other Caymans/Boxsters, going to have a hear of that tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any opinions on this, i cant believe a 50k car would have a loud noise like this by default!
I know there is a known knocking issue when you get to full lock on these but this noise occurred across the range and not just at full lock.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

As above, but are you suggesting you're paying £50k for that car? The value of my 2013 CS may have just gone up. :-)
No :-) 41k actually, but it does have a load of extras and seems to be the going price, been looking for ages for the exact spec that i want so was hoping this was the one!Twinfan said:
I'd try a couple of other 981s at the dealership and point out that the fault is car-specific. I've not heard of any problems with 981 steering racks etc.
Well the guy is saying he can hear it on other cars at his dealership, so i am going tomorrow to take a look, I'll report back to complete this topic!DJMC said:
I looked at a CS 2013 GB launch car in 2015. Options made it £78k new.
It was £41k in Oct 2015 with 13k miles on the clock.
Seems values have held well then? Especially if it's a duffer!
I thought they were only £48k new, can you even get 30k worth of options? Yeah the prices are high at the moment which is a bit concerning but when you want one you want one :-) Even privates sales are late 30s with 30-40k on the clock so if you brought one a few years back sounds like you have lost nothing! Knowing my luck the prices will collapse as soon as i buy one It was £41k in Oct 2015 with 13k miles on the clock.

Very easy to run up a large bill for options - Sports Chrono, PSE exhaust, external and interior paint, wheel type and paint options, bucket or 18-way seats, interior carbon fibre/leather/etc, PDK, PTV, parking sensors and camera, heated seats, climate control, PCM navigation, BOSE or Burmester audio etc etc etc. It very quickly adds up!
All,
fyi i did a test this morning on my car and in fact it does do the same, I have a TTS STronic and if i put my car into drive, put my foot on the brake and then move the steering wheel side to side i get the same kind of noise, as soon as i release the brake, even just a little, it stops.
So gonna do the same today at the dealer, the brakes on the Cayman are a lot more sensitive than mine.
Keeping an open mind :-)
