Things I don’t like about my 981

I get it. Ergonomically the switches and knobs aren’t great. But as you say, everything else is so great it’s all there is to complain about. The parking brake switch is the one that I don’t understand. Although at least being so out of the way it is impossible to activate by accident.
.
Aren't great is a bit of an understatement. As you say the handbrake is unforgivable - but heater and other controls behind the gearlever, many switches where you have to divert your eyes from the road far too much - and indicator switches whose springy action makes you (or at least me) cringe every time you use them... How do Porsche get away with it without being castigated? I'd probably say that, while aesthetically the 981 looks good internally , ergonomically, the switchgear is probably the worst I have owned in recent times..

I can’t disagree with any of that.Green1man said:
A few niggles of my own:
PCM/Nav - I think the unit is decent enough but why don’t they make the maps easily updatable, £2k for this and then maybe map updates available every few years at silly prices is a joke.
Here's a weird thing...PCM/Nav - I think the unit is decent enough but why don’t they make the maps easily updatable, £2k for this and then maybe map updates available every few years at silly prices is a joke.
Driving an 18 plate 718 loaner two weeks ago, it's sat nav didn't know about a new bit of road built 2017 passing Coventry airport and wanted me to come off it up to the old roundabout then go back onto it again. But... my 2014 981 nav does know about the new bit of road and keeps me on it? Could it be my car has been updated without me knowing? Surely I'd have been charged for such an update by my OPC?
Oh... and while on nav, I found the 718's slower to set a destination.

sharp lines date, the 987 is sexy imo.

Eye of the beholder and all that - I really don't like the looks of the 987
981 already looks dated now the 718 is out and gone back to wild life designs ie, shark looks.
God knew how to makes things and the best way to design cars is to copy that.
Fashions change (and are often cyclic) and cars are restyled as much or more to make them different to the previous model than to make them better. And, I'm afraid, there are plenty of buyers who don't want to be seen in last years model, or one whose style is currently out of fashion - which is why manufacturers do it. Cars used to be "rounded" until the late 50s, then went square, then back to rounded (remember the original Sierra) with plenty or perturbations since (think BMW)
I used to think women who slavishly followed the latest fashion were air headed, I'm afraid some men often seem to be the same when it comes to cars. The Kinks "Dedicated follower of fashion" springs to mind

Nothing to do with the latest/best for me - I just prefer the lines of the 981 over both the 987 and the 718
Totally agree. The 981 design is just about visually perfect IMO. I do also like the 718 but the 981 just edges it. I like both considerably more than the 987.Twinfan said:
Not much difference in the dynamics in the grand scheme of things though is there? Not exactly comparing a Lotus and a Rolls Royce are we, so it comes down to the bigger differences - looks (987 vs 981) and engines (981/987 vs 718).
Noooooo! We’ve had 80 pages of this already...let’s not start this up again! Twinfan said:

By dynamics I include steering (987 vs 981) and engine 987/981 vs 718. Are you really saying that looks trump these differences?Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
