I wouldn’t bother with that outdated 981 POS, why test drive an older, slower model when you can actually buy a decent car?
Maybe for the same reason that I sold my 718 CS yesterday and put a deposit down on a 981 GTS, he might enjoy the previous Gen more despite being a slow POS ...?

Having driven both I fully appreciate why you did that. I'd have the 981 GTS every day of the week.

I would go for it, without it the base engine is a little quiet from the drivers seat but it sounds better than the 2.5. Have a go in both and decide what YOU like the sound of best.

Having had an extended test drive in a 718CS and recently had a loan base 718, I can see entirely why you would do that.

I got out of the 718CS and back into my slow ste 981 2.7 Cayman and started to smile again.

Haven’t seen any of that in this thread aside from the snidey remark from the 718 owner.

If you'd be quite happy for someone to call your 718CS a "piece of st" out of hand that's great.
You obviously have better things to do than tap, tap, tap away on your keyboard to defend your car...

...oh... wait a minute...

This thread is about the 718 and Retired is right. Write the guy a letter of complaint of it bothers you, nobody else cares.

No offence intended.

Most of us are trying to be helpful in our own way.
If a friend asks me if PSE is worth it, it is because they care about their sports car soundtrack. If so, and having also a long test on a 718, I would recommend them to test drive a 981, as it sounds better. By saying this, there is no intention to put down the 718 or hurt anyone’s feelings.
I posted earlier (maybe on another thread), that the 718 is the better car except the engine and soundtrack.
Goodnight ! smile

There are many reasons, which can only be experienced if the OP takes a 981 for a drive smile
Besides, some people like ‘outdated’ cars... who wouldn’t want an air cooled 964 turbo..?
Me. Status symbol only so not interested.

Me neither. I've no interest in knackered old classics.

But if you want a new Porsche bult to your own spec what is the point of test driving a 981?

Absolutely ! However it is a considerable purchase, so there is no harm testing an alternative option.

Quite right there if that’s what you want. I’ve had 8 Caysters (soon to be 9) and 5 of those were specced by me but oddly the ones I enjoyed the most were the ones I didn’t spec, my first 987 Cayman (demo) and my two 987 Spyders (demo and used).

If it has to be a new car then obviously there’s only one choice. My preference is for new cars too but 10 months with my 718 CS has shown me that the experience I want is sadly no longer available brand new.

Fast forward to 2040 when all you can buy is electric... I wonder if the transition will be so "calm" then as it is now between F6 NA and F4 turbo power? Mind you we have the hybrid Cayster period to go through before then.

Will used NA and turbo petrol engines all be on a pedestal by then, with prices through the roof? Perhaps, but that will be short lived when used fossil fuel cars are also legislated off the road.

By 2050 perhaps buyers will be flocking to buy used electric cars you were actually allowed to drive yourself, rather than the fully autonomous ones manufacturers can only produce from that date (yet to be legislated!).

Anyway... PSE on a base 718? Why bother. Why amplify that engine noise? vomit

I think pse on a boxster is pretty non existance and couldnt tell if on or off , but in a cayman then thats a different matter , i think the sound is lost on a boxster but more contained on a cayman. Of couse alot different if you have chrono with sports modes as this opens up a few valves and sounds much better.
